Local offering such as Franklin Templeton Investment Funds - Templeton Global Equity Income Fund, and SCHRODER ASIAN EQUITY YIELD offers are some of the funds that offers a dividend approach in selecting stocks. However, i think that the costs (expense ratio, annual management fees) are prohibitively high. That's the reason i choose and ETF that used this approach but with lower than average expenses. |

I think that the concept behind dividend yield as a rough value investing guage is valid. Research by Prof Siegel has shown that it yields (sorry for the pun) a average 2% excess return over the underlying index (S&P 500). However, the WisdomTree etf itself has been a little disappointing. Perhaps factoring annual expense ratio and other expenses. this excess return may disappear. Disclosure: I own a Wisdomtree fund. |

thanks tiandi, for reminding us on the implication of tax on investor's return. i agree with you that there may be conflicts of interest as the professor have got some 'interest' in promoting certain ideas. It just bugs me that if a simple yield strategy is what it takes to out-perform the market, then why isn't more people doing so? |

ltvalue I believe you knew Jeremy Siegel worked at WisdomTree which run a lot of ETF, using his ideas of special index method. If you are his fan you could pick up some of his ETF and hold for a period of time while comparing its performance to some indexed like ST!, DJI, S&P, MS China,, just need to compare one to two years. I think it is going to be a good learning experience. In USA a lot of analyst write about Dividend investing, cited ""sure-win" companies like COKE, Pepsi Cola, CitiBank, Johnson and Johnson, .. long list. full details in analysis. It is good to study just their chart over 1-5 years.. then you can learn a lot One more thing, Dividend is TAXABLE.. if you are Singaporean, u know this taxable income is linked to your annual tax automatically so you do not have to waste time. In some other countries it can be complicated on these and you probably need to give up on thosed TAXable portion of the dividend.. |

it depends on your analysis on the company and its management. a company may give out dividends simply because the management has run out of ideas on how to reinvest its profits to grow/enhance its business. if you think the management has done its best to study its opportunities and found nothing that gives a decent return, then giving out dividends is a good decision. on the other hand, if you think the management is just being conservative and isn't proactive enough to grow the company, then giving out dividends may be a bad decision. |

What do you guys think about using simply a high yield method to screen for good stock? Jeremy Siegel in his new(er) book suggests that high dividend yield stock in general provides good returns to investors. |

Hello, I'll like to post this question to anyone into bonds, what's your take on bonds? Coz businesslike says that bonds will lose out against inflation, but if a correction / bear market should come, then won't bond yields rise? Thne that time u can sell away to get a good YTS. A second question if have, why do SGD gov bonds generate such low interest compared to other countries such as NZD,US,AUS, Germany? Also a second thing i have to ask is, with such expensive REITS nowadays, how are they going to generate value for investors? Joeyhops |

That is true, especially when the dividend paid is very high in percentage of the share price. But if the divedend is very small % then the other market forces outweigh its share price when it went XD. Take for example Cerebos, which used to pay dividend in the 8% order around Feb each year. watch the drop in its share price on Feb of each year from the chart below. |

Yup, for short term trades, unless there is a pending announcement from the company, i think its quite hard using FA right? I heard that in the Singapore market, when dividends are paid out, the share price will automatically be reduced by the amount of dividends per share declared, any insight on this? |

Back to the issue on dividends... I'm a pretty short term trader so I don't really consider dividends all that important to me. I only take note of the CD and XD dates. More important for FA based people I think. |

Yup i totally agree, with your statement, Many of us confine ourselves to our homemarket and never step outside to see the world. There are many bigger markets out there with more opportunities. So we should make it a point to learn about these and strike at the right time. |

No I am singapore PR, I research HK also because I track investors like martin whitman of third avenue funds who invest everywhere including singapore and hong kong. He holds via his fund Cheung Kong Holdings, Hang Lung Group, RHJ International, Wharf Holdings and Wheelock which I will research later. You should not restrict yourself to any country but buy the best stocks wherever they may be. I think a brokerage like poems ( I use dbsvickers, no particular reason) let you buy stocks in the US, canada ,london, hk, sg, malayasia and even korea. When one market or sector may be overvalued there is always some other market or sector that is cheap. |

klooloola: according to their email reply they publish the booklet every other Friday. then send to stores to sell should be ard Saturday 3-5 pm timing. I went on Sunday morning dun have already!!!!! they really sell like hotcakes minutes after put in stores or they only distribute a few copies to each 7-11 stores? i one day late only no more liao?!?!?!?! last sell is 3 Aug print so 4 Aug can buy. next issue should be 17 Aug print 18 Aug can buy. i shall then wait at 18 Aug. Note: The Edge command higher viewership not becuz it is good. it is becuz the stock recommendation there can help ppl earn monies which is the only good abt The Edge. in contrast Shares Investment give us serious investors more information to slowly sieve through and form our own FA of the stock. in this aspect I prefer Shares Investment over The Edge. |
