Neptune Orient Lines Ltd. (NOL SP): The operator of Asia's fourth-largest container shipping company had a drop in its October average revenue, an eighth straight month of decline, as more ships started service. The company's average revenue per 40-foot container fell 9 percent from a year earlier to $2,665 for the period Sept. 23 to Oct. 20, Neptune Orient said in a statement to the Singapore stock exchange yesterday. Neptune Orient rose 2 cents, or 1 percent, to S$2.11. |

The world's 6th-biggest container liner said that it's container shipping arm APL carried 5% more containers on its ships in June. But it suffered a 9% fall in average revenue per container as it felt the slowdown in the industry.
In the Jan-Feb period, NOL suffered its first decline in the number of containers on its ships in 2 1/2 years, in a sign that the shipping industry is heading for a downturn. NOL plans to invest up to $70 million in a railway freight service running between Mumbai and New Delhi over the next two years, giving it a foothold in the domestic freight market of Asia's third-largest economy. |

Fuel surcharge should have minimal impact on NOL as it's only for 3 months, and applies to just 20% of NOL's shipping volumes. Additionally, there's a possibility that this surcharge may not go through because of intense competition. NOL's earnings are still expected to deteriorate over the next few quarters as rates along all major shipping routes decline, as more capacity is added in the industry over the next 2 years. There will be excess new supply of global container shipping fleet in FY06 and FY07. | ||

NOL rose after the Far Eastern Freight Conference it belonged to said its members were imposing a surcharge, for each standard container moved fom Asia ex-Japan to Europe, starting next month. The group which accounts for 60% of capacity between Asia and Europe, also restored freight rates to US$250 a standard container this month, a sign that fears of a glut of new container ships entering service are subsiding. Container lines are reporting better-than-expected demand for freight services. Cargo volumes between Asia and Europe were up 14% in the first 5 months the year compared to the 13% growt for the entire year projected, according to shipping newspaper Lloyd's List. The peak surcharge will also help recover part of the extra costs of shipping fuel, or bunker. Bunker prices rose to a record US$365 a tonne in S'pore on May 3, from US$287.50 a tonne at the end of last year. It traded at US$335 a tonne yesterday. |
