bunnie, what different scary thought? :P eh thought it's standard practice in s'pore. husbands and wives have joint acct, and wives have personal acct. esp if they not working. it's the old saying, zhang4 fu1 bu4 ru2 kou3 dai4 qian2. (ie, a husband cannot compare with money in the pocket). and erm. $10 for close relatives sounds a bit too little.... i'm not married but i still have to give leh. like $100-200 to parents and $500 to grandma. so married ppl, pls don't complain....just have more kids, or go borrow some. haha. agree with bunbun tho, it's the thought that's more impt. after all, not everyone can afford to give a lot. aiyah. men. all the same. tsk. |

aiyoh, am far off from the wifely role, judging from the constant "concerned comments" from bf :P polygamy defiinitely NOT the way to resolve nice-men-not-enough-to-share-around problem.but don't need to intro this back into society again and one can still see that some men are shared :p forglory, if you can have difficulty facing the same person daily, then you are still not ready to settle down. only when the prospect of seeing the person when you wake up sounds not so scary, then i guess you have the 'right' mindset. as for me, i have that mindset, but then... er, i now face a different scary thought. hahaha |

bunbun, In your first post....looks like you are going to fit into the wifely role perfectly.....you've already worked out a ang pow quantum guideline. About not enough guys to go around....perhaps we should revisit a suggestion broached by LKY some years ago about reintroducing polygamy....he he he. That should solve the problem. Don't understand why Spore got rid of this practice....afterall, it was accepted merely a couple of generations ago and it worked very well. About joint a/c....yep, absolutely....thats the way it should be. When I made that post to Pikachu, I wasn't complaining...I was merely making a statement of fact. Anyway, credit to my wife, she's very responsible with $$$. In fact, she dosen't use funds from our joint a/c. It was set up this way to circumvent any problems in the event of one's unexpected absence. Also, its an indication of trust....I trust her not to misuse the funds; and she feels secure with this arrangement. |

oh almost forgot... for those men who let their wives do the honor of giving, have joint accounts blah blah, remind me ok, to show this thread to my bf *grins widely* but you guys are great! that will stop him from complaining about the 'what's mine is yours and what's mine is mine' concept, because it IS the way to be! *LOL* |

i notice that all contributions came from married MEN, no female partiicpation at all. i thick-skinned. come in uninvited :P how about looking from a Single, Not-very-young-anymore, Mid-income gp, lady? :P actually hor, for ppl like us, not too old to stop receiving but then also not young enough to still take without embarrassment, we are in quite a tacky situation. it's not our fault that we remain single (simply not enough nice guys out there to share among single women mah!). those who don't really feel like giving to ppl like us, should then stop, instead of giving it grudgingly and making comments like 'settle down soon then i won't need to give u any more'. have i mentioned i hate CNY? argh.... as for the amt, personally, i think it should be viewed as a token. i have this grandaunt who gives me $2 every year. like for the past 15 yrs at least. and she stays in a landed property ok. and has another 2 more under her name, and all her kids are earning like 5-figure. but she always wish me well :) i think if we start counting the contents inside the red packet, then it took the meaning out of CNY and of giving isnt it? oh yes, i was once told: once u increase the amount, it's impossible to lower it in the following year(s) even if kena hit by recession. so... erm, stick to may $4 - $10 is the safest decision? |

eastonbay I have not went back to spore to celebrate CNY for the last 20 years. And never give angpow.I always go back around August,so escape lah. Anyway my niece and nephew,probably will not know much of me and my family here. Here CNY is very low key and my son probably do not know much of CNY. To U all happy and properous (in red for luck) CNY. |

$4 doesn't sound very nice.. so I give $6 to kid I do not know people. Close friend's kid get $10. In between (not too close, not too distant) gets $8. Nephews and nieces get $20. Geojam, do you give even when you far and away in Perth? I mean, give to those who are in Singapore? |

geojam, traditionally yes! People give anpow to their relatives who are not married even they are working. Angpow now necessary to be big la.. |
