x 0   x 0  Alert Admin	Interesting to see the varying and diverse viewpoints of different forum members. My opinion is that whether FA or TA, they are both important and just like a pair of hands, you need both of them to produce the best results. One thing I know, relying purely on fundamental analysis is very dangerous unless you are an active investor like Warren Buffett. Relying purely on technical analysis is also very dangerous because you never know when you will lose that big one. However, is heartening to see that members here who rely sorely on technical analysis have a cut loss system, which is a very wise decision. Whether one wants to be a technical trader or fundamental investor or mix, is best to know yourself - your own style, strategy, capital, risk appetite, etc...  FA + TA = FATA (prosper or HUAT in chinese). I bear this hard in mind ever since then, and managed to save me from quite a number of kan chiong mistake, which was happened many many times in the past. So please remember the golden rule, never jump in during the first half an hour, unless you want to take opportunity to get out. And I also observed, unless the counter is super bull run, usually the last half an hour or even before that, selling force is quite strong, probably also due to profit taking. So if want to get out and take profit, I'll usually do it at latest by 4.15 before the selling begin. My opinion only

x 0   x 0  Alert Admin	greetings bro sc. as much as I agree with you on your points abt cut loss,   I think something is missed out  that star-trader mentioned with regards to emotions which he didnt explain much in his post. Emotion and understanding human pscyh,    I can't say more about how impt these 2 factors are in Short term trading. But how many knows how to do that effectively?     If you read the news , many young , in-experience traders want to make quick buck these days but  many got burnt in the process why? Cause human behavior is all alike. No. 1) they  speculate by betting what they don't have and borrow on credit. Its true that these days some bros  and sis here have been earning kopi money..however I would like to them to analyse their earnings,  since beginning of their trading/investment? Did they earn more when they invest, or did they earn more through speculation? 2) Now lets look around us? Who are the richest men/women in the world?  Are they investors or speculators? Do you think they contra to be where they are now? Does P_Lim, WB, OHL and others make it big cause they started with big capital? Cutting Loss is essential regardless whether one play stocks for short term or invest for long term. If a company have problem like  Vard previously, it is not a good idea to continue to hold it and see it drop day by day. So we cannot rule out  loss system. Why not cut loss and use the money to buy other potential counters?. Price always moves before Fundamentals. Techincal Analysis can provide signal whether there is any problem with the company or whether there is potential in the company. Of course, TA may not be so accuarate at times because of speculation or when a market crash. To buy a counter when you see the fundamental may be too late because you   may be buying at higher price. In my opinion,  buying a potential counter or you can see the value is a better choice. The return is much higher than buying a fundamentally sound company. I agree with you that it is good to hold a counter but the issue here is how many counters can one hold. Many knows about holding stocks but you will need deep pocket to hold so many counters. Therefore, I believe many regular investors hold some and play some. When I say play, that would mean playing short term like contra. How many regulars just buy and hold without playing stocks. Yes, playing contras is not the best choice. But if one wants to play but don't have deep pocket to hold, then this is the only option. But that doesn't mean that playing contra will sure loss money. Yes, it is not easy but if you can have the correct skill, you still can makes some kopi money. On the issue of cut loss then bounce back, I think we can't avoid that. That is part and parcel of the game. Even if one hold a stock, it can still happened after he sell it. On TA wise, I agreed that no need to use so many indicators. Holding power is important.. ------> Have you ever experienced, when you sold using cut loss system, and it bounced back again after that? With the right combination of technical indicators,time frame to lock a position of a certain stock ( Each stock got different dates to lock in, that's why you see uptrend/downtrend..except those in-active,low volume stocks..) 3) Do not use all the technical indicators, but rather choose those that you comfortable with, at least 3 to 5.. and not more than that.  3) Emotion..another big topic.. 4) Many more..but can't finish in this page itself.. 'cos knowing technicals will enable us to probably be able to buy a good fundamental stock at a lower price on dips due to probably some temporary overreaction of some news which doesnt affect fundamentals in long run, or simply profit taking by traders.. in market, we have a mixture of investors & traders.. so a good fundamental stock may still not rise, as it's likely a combination of both investors & traders who turn attention to it likely to push price up a lot.. similarly i feel a trader should also be aware of some fundamentals to minimize risk.. at least it wouldnt be too bad if traders invest in a stock that is still fundamentally sound, if the technicals went wrong.. just my humble views in front of all the sifu here lol Stockcham      ( Date: 18-Aug-2013 16:32) Posted: Welcome Bro and thanks for sharing your view! For those who are still new, hope you learn from my experience, so you don't have to pay tuition fee again to learn for yourself. I q 145 Wednesday night. Thursday morning, saw the matching at 146, but it did change to 140 for a few seconds, I felt something is not right. But then it moves back to 146, and then 147. I wanted to withdraw my q, but thought 145 is still quite safe. Last minute saw the big qs at 147 fully disappeared, and 146 also disappeared, immediately tried to withdraw, rejected, it was already done at 146. At opening, immediately sold down to 145, mine done. Went down a bit, I observed first, and it did move up a bit, should have sold higher looking at all these negative signs, again, hope it can move up, finally came down again, immediately I cut at 143. Have decided not to q before opening seeing too many fake buy qs b4 opening. Even if I will q, must know how to look at negative signs and withdraw quick enough. Since I am not so good yet to read signs, will not q at the moment b4 opening. For a new person like me, following our COO's advice of wait and see during the first 10 minutes of opening, should be safer. HUAT AH!

Would also like to take the opportunity to thank sifu teeth53 as I also benefited from his IPO analysis and market depth analysis. Lastly, also to Bro KelvinLim123 (if he happens to be reading), even though sometimes his words are rude and unkind, what he said about cutting loss and " trend is your friend" is actually correct, especially for short-term trading and punting. Failed to see from his point of view that time as a short-term trader or investor for certain stocks.   All the rules and regulations in this club are therefore very correct especially when the time horizon is short. Unless one is really very sure about the growth prospects and future value of a company (that does not pay dividends yet), investing long term can be a " scary" affair and need lots of patience. What I feel is that for liquid stocks with thousands of buy/sell queue lots should have no effect. For low volumn and price spread counters really got effect. Cutting Loss is essential regardless whether one play stocks for short term or invest for long term. If a company have problem like  Vard previously, it is not a good idea to continue to hold it and see it drop day by day. So we cannot rule out  loss system. Why not cut loss and use the money to buy other potential counters?. Price always moves before Fundamentals. Techincal Analysis can provide signal whether there is any problem with the company or whether there is potential in the company. Of course, TA may not be so accuarate at times because of speculation or when a market crash. To buy a counter when you see the fundamental may be too late because you   may be buying at higher price. In my opinion,  buying a potential counter or you can see the value is a better choice. The return is much higher than buying a fundamentally sound company. I agree with you that it is good to hold a counter but the issue here is how many counters can one hold. Many knows about holding stocks but you will need deep pocket to hold so many counters. Therefore, I believe many regular investors hold some and play some. When I say play, that would mean playing short term like contra. How many regulars just buy and hold without playing stocks. Yes, playing contras is not the best choice. But if one wants to play but don't have deep pocket to hold, then this is the only option. But that doesn't mean that playing contra will sure loss money. Yes, it is not easy but if you can have the correct skill, you still can makes some kopi money. On the issue of cut loss then bounce back, I think we can't avoid that. That is part and parcel of the game. Even if one hold a stock, it can still happened after he sell it. On TA wise, I agreed that no need to use so many indicators. Rule 3) , though my initial trading was based on this (Eg: 7% stop loss,etc..) but no longer valid for my current trading system.. Basically, 1) In any technical analysis stocks you want to trade, should always ensure that Fundamental Analysis is intact for the stock that you want to trade, be it short,mid or long term.. This will minimal the risk, although I won't say totally eliminate all risks. 2) Never trade using contra as any stocks need time to nurture, like a " nurturing a plant" .. It can be 1,2 to 4 weeks..but sell when the target price is hit and reap profits. Holding power is important.. ------> Have you ever experienced, when you sold using cut loss system, and it bounced back again after that? With the right combination of technical indicators,time frame to lock a position of a certain stock ( Each stock got different dates to lock in, that's why you see uptrend/downtrend..except those in-active,low volume stocks..) 3) Do not use all the technical indicators, but rather choose those that you comfortable with, at least 3 to 5.. and not more than that.  3) Emotion..another big topic.. 4) Many more..but can't finish in this page itself.. So I suppose if a company is risk-free, i can give it a conservative risk or discount factor of 0.04, and if it's average dividends paid out per year is like 0.125, the intrinsic value of the company as a mature and stable dividend-yield company with limited potential for growth would be $3.125. Corrections and volatility do occur in the short term but in the long term, prices will still match back to their fundamentals for these companies (unless their fundamentals really change). Therefore, for companies which no longer have any potential growth and if their annual dividends paid out per year is very little, it's intrinsic value would be matched accordingly (some S-chip companies pay really miserable dividends and I can't see how much growth they can produce with their retained earnings). Ultimately, the thing I look out for in companies is whether they have value or not. And I would only buy if they are really cheap and considering their stability and risk, whether for capital gain companies or dividend-play companies. For capital gain companies, I would normally sell after it has reached my target price. Sorry for the long post as when I talked about investing, I can always go on and on. Investing is just like planting a tree. In terms of capital gain companies, is like you watch it grow from a seedling to a mature tree. For dividend-yield companies, is like you eat the fruits from the tree. A fruit tree that can produce many fruits (dividends) and on a land with fertile soil (cash-rich), and in an environment with stable weather conditions (debt/risk) will naturally fetch a high value once farmers and people (the Market) realize it.
