UPDATED 19 June, 11:00PM: 3-hour PSI reading hit a record high of 321 at 10pm on Wednesday.]
The Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) hit a new high of 321 at 10pm on Wednesday, climbing into the " hazardous" range of above 300, according to data from the National Environment Agency (NEA). At 9pm, the PSI had soared to 290, higher than the previous peak of 226 in 1997, and entering the " very unhealthy" range of 201-300. It was a leap of 100 points from the PSI reading just an hour earlier, making some wonder if the updated reading was a typo on the NEA website. " I thought it was actually worse in the day, though -- seems pretty impossible that there would be a hundred-point jump within an hour, coupled with the fact that it isn't that windy in the first place," said systems analyst Frederick Tang, 36.  " I thought it was a mistake at first," added communications undergraduate Gina Foo, 21, who said she had been feeling " very uncomfortable" while travelling outside during the day. " But I will definitely be wary about my plans for tomorrow, given how unpredictable the situation is." Masks and air purifiers flew off the shelves at pharmacies and medical stores on Wednesday while others venturing outside experienced a range of ailments. " You can actually feel the haze now -- the smoke and dust particles in your eyes," said 24-year-old Ronald Loh, who was travelling around the Tampines area. " It's especially bad for people wearing contact lenses or with eye problems." " I can smell the haze in all my clothes and towels, even though they were hung inside," added Tang.

http://sg.news.yahoo.com/massive-far-east-quake-felt-moscow-no-casualties-075832308.html Massive undersea earthquake in Russia's Far East prompted a tsunami warning and unleashed tremors across Russia including in Moscow around 7,000 kilometres away. At a depth of more than 600 kilometres (370 miles). Russia issued a tsunami warning for Sakhalin island and its region. Quake was felt most strongly in the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, around 560 kilometres away. Huge magnitude and great depth of the quake meant that its echoes were felt across the Eurasian continent including in the Russian capital itself. " The whole plate on which the continent stands - shook," Chief researcher at the Institute of Physics of the Earth at the Russian Academy of Sciences. " If an earthquake happens at such a low depth, the waves move along low layers, practically the mantle," he told Kommersant FM radio. " The waves can even move through the Earth's core," teeth53 thot - Earth core  is cracking up........ |

Sunday - Strong earthquake hit Taiwan, killing one and violently shaking buildings in the capital Taipei. The quake sent people running into the streets and was also felt in HK, more than 700 kilometres away.
Six high-speed trains were halted, services resumed after no damage was found to the line. Operations at  3 nuclear power plants on the island were not affected, according to state-owned Taiwan Power Co. This biggest earthquake to hit this year, was shallow  & it happened in the centre of the island, its velocity could be felt islandwide," deputy chief of the seismology centre, told reporters. " Today's earthquake was somewhat related to the 1999 one." Nantou county was the epicentre of a 7.6-magnitude quake in Sept 21, 1999 that killed around 2,400 people in the deadliest natural disaster in the island's. In  March a strong earthquake in the same vicinity as Sunday's tremor killed one person and injured 86 others. Violent shock waves damaged buildings and triggered two blazes. Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is regularly hit by earthquakes. |

S'poreans' desire for clearer energy - by Lee Tze Yang (Chairman of Shell Companies in S'pore) A recent future energy survey commissioned by Shell Eastern Petroleum revealed that energy needs loom large in the minds of people in Asia-Pacific region. 7 in 10 respondents in Australia, S'pore, Vietnam and Thailand indentified it as top most concern, it climate changes and the cost of energy were regarded as the most important issues. This new lens scenario study looks at how economic, political and social forces might play out in the 21st century, and the consequences for the global energy systems and environment. Smart policy decisions, community engagement and consultation are essential to meet world's rising energy needs while seeking to safeguard the environment for future generations. http://www.shell.com/global/future-energy/scenarios/new-lens-scenarios.html Download New Lens Scenarios PDF (PDF, 12 MB) - opens in new window With world’s population headed toward 9 bil at mid-century n  millions of people climbing out of poverty, global energy demand could increase by as much as 80% by years  2050. That’s according to Shell’s latest scenarios, which look at trends in the economy, politics and energy in considering developments over the next half a century. What might lie ahead 50 years from now… or even in 2100? We consider two possible scenarios of the future, taking a number of pressing global trends and issues and using them as “lenses” through which to view the world. The scenarios provide a detailed analysis of current trends and their likely trajectory into the future. They dive into the implications for the pace of global economic development, the types of energy we use to power our lives and the growth in greenhouse gas emissions. The scenarios also highlight areas of public policy likely to have the greatest influence on the development of cleaner fuels, improvements in energy efficiency and on moderating greenhouse gas emissions. The 1st scenario, labelled “mountains, sees a strong role for govt and the introduction of firm and far-reaching policy measures. These help to develop more compact cities and transform the global transport network. New policies unlock plentiful natural gas resources – making it the largest global energy source by the 2030s – and accelerate carbon capture and storage technology, supporting a cleaner energy system.    The 2nd scenario, we call oceans, describes a more prosperous and volatile world. Energy demand surges, due to strong economic growth. Power is more widely distributed and govts take longer to agree on  major decisions. Mkt forces rather than policies shape the energy system: oil & coal remain part of the energy mix but renewable energy also grows. By 2070s solar becomes the world’s largest energy source. |

http://www.eco-business.com/news/journalists-tour-lungmen-nuclear-power-plant/ New Taipei city - District facility. In the building housing reactor one, journalists saw 872 new fuel rods in storage. According to an engineer, fuel rods that have not undergone nuclear fission present no danger of radiation. Once the plant is in operation, thickened steel plates around the generators next to the reactor will prevent any radiation from escaping into the atmosphere, he  said. In the oceanside pumping station that will supply water to cool the reactors, the engineer pointed out that the seawall can resist a tsunami as high as 8.07 meters. Moreover, in contrast to the design at Japan’s Fukushima Dai-ichi facility, the pumps are indoors and protected by individual watertight gates. “There’s no way a tsunami could affect pumping  here.” teeth53  thot - When the god of nature is angry, is ok, then when god of nature is very, very angry. teeth53 said - is not ok. |

http://www.eco-business.com/news/korea-vietnam-agree-on-nuclear-plant-development/ Vietnam plans to build a total of 10 nuclear power plants. Russia and Japan have already won orders for two  each. Korea also hopes for two. The contracts are expected to be concluded late next  year. Korea joined the club of nuclear power plant suppliers in late 2009 when it won the US$40 billion bid for the construction and operation of four nuclear power plants from the  U.A.E. http://www.eco-business.com/news/korea-electric-falls-nuclear-reactor-shutdowns/ Korea Electric Power Corp fell to the lowest in  5mths in Seoul trading, citing prospects the shutdowns would hurt operating  profit.  South Korea’s govt ordered shutting down of two nuclear reactors found to be using components whose safety certificates were  faked. South Korea has 23 reactors nationwide, which generate around 35 percent of the country’s  electricity. Others - Journalists tour Lungmen nuclear power plant   |

http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/english/news/20130601_01.html Officials at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant have asked for more help from the public to cover their rising costs. The latest request if it's approved, total aid to TEPCO would be about 38 bil dollars. The govt has placed a cap on aid at 50 billion dollars. But TEPCO estimates its costs will ultimately exceed this figure, especially if it is forced to pay for decontamination of the surrounding countryside. |

At least four exposed to radiation after Japan laboratory leak - agency Reuters India...and possibly upto 55, were exposed to radiation when radioactive material leaked during a laboratory experiment in Japan, the facility's operators said, although authorities were not told of the leak for two days. The radioactive material also leaked outside the nuclear physics laboratory in Tokaimura, 110 km (65 miles) northeast of Tokyo, during the experiment on Thursday, the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) said in a statement. The JAEA did not report the leak to the government's nuclear regulator until more than 34 hours later.   |

TEPCO officials believe highly radioactive fish had been feeding
in areas that were seen as “hotspots” of radiation. The utility company
has already planned to catch more fish for testing, and to collect their feed and soil from the seabed, in order to
determine the exact cause of the high levels. Since fishermen have been given permission on an experimental basis to catch

http://green-networld.com/facts/pollution.htm In U.S. factories spew 3 million tons of toxic chemicals into the air, land, and water. That compounds the over one-half billion tons of solid hazardous wastes - we're not talking about your garbage here - that get dumped across the nation for our generation to one day clean up. (The Gale Environmental Scorecard) What to expect when everythings is throw  into air, their river and soil, plus now even  contaminated samples were found to have 0.21 milligram to 0.4 milligram of cadmium in each kilogram of rice. Chinese govt allows a maximum 0.2 mg of cadmium in each kilogram of rice, " First water, then the air we breathe, and now the earth. How can people still survive?" wrote one user on Sina Weibo. Food safety is a particular concern, as some of the contaminants from years of industrial development make their way into the country's food chain from soil in which it's grown. In 2011 research at Nanjing Agricultural University, roughly 10% of all rice sold in China is tainted by cadmium, the result of use of industrial wastewater for irrigation, dumping of industrial waste. In 2006, state Ministry for Environmental Protection launched a nationwide soil-pollution survey, was to have been concluded in 2010. Earlier this year the ministry rejected requests by a Beijing lawyer to see the results, citing " state secrets." Cadmium is frequently found in leafy vegetables such as spinach and choi sum grown in polluted conditions. For cadmium to be evident in rice grains, the soil in which it was grown must have been especially highly polluted, said Jonathan Wong, a Hong Kong biology professor who studied mainland soil pollution extensively. Experts say removing cadmium from soil is a costly process that likely require seeding certain plants for long periods to help remove toxicity. The metal doesn't degrade on its own, and can linger in the human body for decades. Late in  1960s. Japan  has  outbreak of itai-itai disease, or " ouch, ouch" disease, was traced back to cadmium after it poisoned people and softened their bones. while Japan as always mentioned it safe to eat n drink even knowing willingly their food chain is contaminated. |
