SingTel is one of 11 remaining applicants still in the running for two telco licences in Myanmar, following the withdrawal of Vodafone and China Mobile. SingTel has partnered Myanmar Telephone Company (M-Tel) and KBZ Group. DB cites that the growth potential is very attractive with a population of 55m and estimated mobile penetration of < 10%. The government has set an aggressive target of achieving 80% mobile penetration by 2016, which implies the two new entrants could each gain up to 15m subscribers over three years (assuming one-third market share each). This equates to c.4% of SingTel’s existing group mobile subscriber base (excl. Africa). Without also going into details of the broader issues around economic reforms, infrastructure development and labour supply, DB notes that the government’s penetration target seems optimistic in a country where two-thirds of the population is still rural while 70% of the labour force is in agriculture. House view that the telcos will face significant challenges seeding devices in this country, where GDP per capita (at US$1,400) ranks #205 in the world. DB has a BUY rating with TP of $4.23. |

I can understand  how you are  feeling. It has been happening to me for years! And I am sure it is not just you and me. There must be lots of others in the same boat as well. Still, I persevere, hoping to learn from my mistakes, and hoping to make some money from trading. Cheers! :-)

SingTel and its consortium has highlighted its plans to help develop Myanmar’s satellite capabilities and boost its international connectivity, claiming their bid far exceeded Myanmar’s tender requirements in many areas, including network coverage plans and service prices. SingTel pointed out it would build a " world-class mobile network" , which will cover 95% of the Myanmar's population in 36 mths and provide affordable mobile services for both rural and urban customers. Add that its investment would attract more foreign investment and create jobs. SingTel has pledged to help Myanmar to launch a national satellite regardless of tender results and also pointed that Myanmar would be able to leverage its fleet of satellites and submarine cable footprint. To accelerate Myanmar's development of its own international infrastructure, SingTel will invite the govt to participate in feasibility studies for future satellite programmes and lend its assistance in the launch of a Myanmar national satellite. Maybank KE notes that while some of the plans (Satelite) may appear to be only feasible in the longer term, the current ‘ranting’ does put the Singtel consortium in a favorable position, as it underlies its commitment to the long-term growth of Myanmar’s economy. Singtel’s position is boosted further by its consortium partners. KBZ Group who is one of the largest conglomerates in Myanmar and its affiliates include KBZ Bank, the largest privately owned bank in the country, domestic airline Air KBZ, and industrial developer KBZ Industries. The third partner is M-Tel, which is based in Myanmar and provides telecom-related consultancy for industry projects. |
