Hi I_tan888, Terraseeds.com (they used to advertised in this website) regularly conducts a novice and a MACD course. Fees are quite resonable. Instructors are good and helpful. I believe many SJ members have attended their courses. I have attended both and I feel that they're good. I'm not vested in Terraseeds. |

dear Sporeguy, I afraid the exact route may have now been flooded by the building of the Three Gorges Dam, however there is a temple in honour of Zhuge Liang in Chengtu (it is called Temple of Marquis Wu [武侯祠] ) and nearby is the masoleum of Liu Bei. I visited the place in mid eighties and took steamer down Yangtse River from Chongjin.. it was quite memoriable ( experienced the same stirring feelings described by Eastonbay...) then the ppl were wearing uniform green or blue mao clothes... so different from nowaday.. |

Hi Eastonbay, you visited 'Chi-bi' the red cliff where ZhugeLiang won a resounding victory over ChaoChao. Any photo to share in this forum ? In fact I was wondering is there any tour that follow the route of Zhuge Liang to set up the Shu kingdom from the east.... |

Dear Sporegal, have no fear.. the toilets in China have really improved considerably. Here is an article from WTO (World Toilet Organisation - not april fool joke I am serious) BEIJING?Authorities here are always eager to show off their accomplishments, so when Beijing hosted the World Toilet Organization conference last week (November, 2004), delegates were given a grand tour of the city's toilets. First stop was the public toilet at the National Museum on Tiananmen Square. As the delegates descended from their buses and walked en masse into the restroom, waiting TV cameras followed them inside, surprising people relieving themselves at the urinals. Undaunted, the delegates wandered the marbled restroom, tapping on commodes, inspecting piping, and peering intently into the long mirrors. This was not just any restroom. A Viennese waltz floated around the room, "to relax and help patrons," the manager later said, and giant plasma television screens hung from the walls. The room was thick with air freshener, and every inch of steel glittered. Conference-goers took notes and shot pictures. Btw, a friend of mine recently (last month) visited that toilet, it is still as good... he actually showed me a photo he took and I think it is better than the toilet at our Zoo (which won the title of best toilet in the world) |

My interest in China is fuelled mainly by it's long history. It's the oldest uninterrupted/unbroken civilisation that still exists now with written records. I stressed unbroken because Egypt is probably the oldest but the chain was broken along the way. I admit I'm a travel junky, been and seen many ancient places in Europe etc. When I finally plucked up the courage to visit China (psycho-ing myself really hard that I can take the toilet, hygiene standard there) and set foot on Great Wall of China, I was really moved and in awe. Maybe due to chinese blood. I never had that feeling anywhere else in thost angmoh countries. So, I want/plan to visit places like Xi-an, the ancient capital of Qing Dynasty, 'Chi-bi' the red cliff where ZhugeLiang won a resounding victory over ChaoChao etc etc. because I can identify with these events/places. My hope to visit these place DIY style... can't stand going in a tour group of singaporean... seldom puncture... likes shopping... and often late coming back to bus if there's food, complain about food, complain about anything. (me, singaporean too) |

and latest IM Pei's work... in Suzhou. Elf: agree that the clean up in Beijing could be due to Olympic games next year. Actually same happened to Barcelona. It was a very chaotic place (traffic, gypsies) before they hosted 1992 olympic. It was a big clean-up and remained a nice city after olympic. Hopefully Beijing remains clean and nice after 2008. Yes, I agree that some people there do things with 3rd world mentality, e.g. things we can't tolerate like pushing, spitting, talking very loudly. *sigh* |

With regards to toilets in China, remembered going to a toilet in a restaurant that's shared! Just the main door and 2 cubicles, 1 for men and the other for women but without doors! Of course we locked the main door when using it and got scolded by a local man who was waiting outside when we came out of the toilet. But generally if u are going to the city areas. their toilets are more catered to the tourists and have doors and are much cleaner! As for mentality, i've been to both Beijing and Shanghai, no one has yet to scold me, though i must say if u want to jostle with the locals eg for bus or train, be prepared! Personally i prefer Suzhou, for the quaint houses with lovely courtyards and Wuzheng a water town. |

Thanks chinkaisu for the lovely rose! Singaporegal, no worries about safety for Vietnam. Just need to keep a lookout for the 1001 motorcycles when crossing the street. Lots of of ang moh tourists visiting Vietnam F & E, fewer singaporeans go to Vietnam cos not too many package tours. Me, i dont like to do package tour, feel like a sheep!!! Two of my girlfriends went n their own to Hanoi & Halong Bay without any problems. Though be prepared to be the only Singaporeans there. Think it's safer than China Nanjing where my friend's haversack got picked and France Paris where i was approached by 2 men claiming to be policemen and asked to see my wallet when i told them my passport was at the hotel! Just stay alert and be careful and the only risk will be the locals overcharging u, which they will as in most developing countries! If u want i can send u some photos of Ho Chi min and Hanoi/Halong Bay. I also have a VCD on Lijiang if u r interested. |

Elf, Your comment i i would have likely panic sold. Even if you are an FA investor, In fact, I was looking for an opportunity to pick up somemore when it dipped...but it did not dip enough....and rebounded too quickly. I totally agree with your comment that TA is useful for timing entry and exit......still learning to do it right. |

l_tan, sorry to hear abt your losses. and yea, might be a good idea to take up some courses or read up/learn some TA. At the very least, it helps one make some sense of what's going on in the market so can perhaps lessen mistakes... i know TA helped me a lot. eg, if i didn't know TA and saw SPC dropped yesterday, i would have likely panic sold. Even if you are an FA investor, TA helps time entry and exit. good tool. :) singaporegal! *hugs* keke. yea, china toilets are apparently dirty. i've heard stories abt it. yea, apparently most don't come with doors. My friend told me a horror story abt toilets with no toilets--ie, just cubicles and you 'go' on the floor or in the common running drain through all the toilets (think longkang style), so never enter the last cubicle 'cos everything's stuck there! >~< oh yah, and always bring umbrella or sarong. Eastonbay, Beijing different 'cos they've cleaned up for the Olympics! haha. my vote for short hols goes to coastal thailand. or maldives. :))))))) beach! sun, sand, sea. ahhhhh..... ahhh my sis wants to use comp. ok byebye ppl! and nono, singaporegal sounds single-sex school but i think she's more RGS type leh. ok gotta go tata |

How do you know I'm the gentle type? Hey Eastonbay, From what I hear from other people, they say Beijing and Shanghai are like First World cities. But the residents are still stuck in Third World mentality. I heard that people push you around and scold you for no reason. Is that true? |

one quick post about toilets in China. When I visited Beijing (1st time for me anywhere in China), I visited some public toilets with the same prejudice. To my pleasant surprise, Damn, their toilets there are a lot cleaner than many of the toilets here!!! No smell too. Near attractions, they could afford to station aunties/uncles to clean up right after EACH use. Guess labour is really affordable there. So toilets at attractions are good. Can't say the same for private toilets like restaurants. Some are like our kopitiam, some better, some worse. |
