haha. always good to dream. one mil pounds equivalent 3 mil sing. i'd split into overseas properties, gold and equities. with this kind of money, no need to take risk on pennies and punts; go direct into blues and high yield defensive plays. can live comfortably off the divvies and rentals alone. oh. and stay in HDB flat here. lower cost, conservancy, and can qualify for rebates. money makes money. muah ha. take long holidays, too. everything to be spent comes from profit, so principle remains untouched, til you're too old to invest. yours truly, elf |

Buy a reasonable boat and equipped it with computers link to SGX and essential items. Use the balance to trade onboard my new boat. WOW ! That would be nice - work and play at the same time. Cheers! |

Invest all. 50% of the return go further into investment. The other 50% of the return will be used as scholoarship of $1000 per month per foreign student. All this will be in the trust. The recipient will in turn have to sign an undertaking to support another foreign student after on graduating and found a job. |

I'll take half of it, divide it in 20 equal portions (position size) to take trading positions. |

Personaly, with a million pounds , I will get myself a freehold property. Depending on the current condition/state it is in , might do some minor repairs ,refurbish etc.and let it out for rent . Could easily fetch around $3000 per month. As pointed out by EastonBay, $30k per annum is a luxury in Singapore . Its like another person in the household bringing in a monthly salary of $3000. On top of that the property is yours, period.Your money is locked away. I would treat it like my children's property. I am just the custodian . Cash in hand (or bank/ FD) might be tempting to spend. Unlike, say shares, funds management , where u are at the mercy of ups and down , ur property is solid on the ground. Won't bother me if the property price goes up or down.We have a solid asset here. Maybe a bit old fashioned , but Old is Gold ! Of course lah, can use the rent money to play play some shares ..hahaha...! ...sigh....hahaha ! (so, ultrameg , when can I expect the demand draft for a million pounds ? ; ) hahaha |

EastonBay, I think you are a wise person. However, to suppress the urge to splurge when a big sum of money just sitting behind, it is definitely not easy. Maybe I will follow what the author had mentioned before, invest it REITs and I would have regular passive income and appreciation of wealth. http://www.helium.com/tm/223123 |

Firstly, we are talking about a million pound, British pound, not sing dollars. That's is to me hell lots of a lot. Even if it is S$, it is still alot of money to me. If that happens, I really will give myself a slap to make sure I'm not dreaming. "only gives 30K a year to live on"... $30k ONLY! Secondly, I think unless you have an expensive lifestyle, $30k a year just from simple interest is quite sufficient to live in Singapore (assuming you do not have financial obligation like housing loan, car loan). I know for me (alone) it's enough. Think of those family with household income of $2k a month. These are certainly not minority. How do you think they live their lives. |

How to retire if you have a million ? Well certainly do not use a cash fund or bonds or deposits. You must be in equities and withdraw not more than 3% a year. see... http://www.efficientfrontier.com/ef/998/hell.htm |

A million isn't much these days, A good condo near the ocean costs more. If you have a million and wish to retire you must buy a STI ETF (bonds and deposits are bad for retirement only equity returns above inflation) and consume 3% a year, that only gives 30K a year to live on. |
