Asterisk, I am/was not an accountant. I have an IT background and was a consultant. I like 'soft' issues relating to IT (not to be confused with software) e.g. how best to handle the workflow change, human issues, implementation issues while implementing a new Biz System etc etc i.e. chap-pa-rang, everything also can type. I worked closely with the Audit team. I often went to clients place with the Auditors while they worked on their Audit jobs. I picked up financial/audit related knowledge then. It intrigued me enough to do MBA. Later I ventured into CFA level 1. Lucky for me, I passed but didn't want to continue because the later levels dwell more into Debt, Fixed Income, Derivatives, Forex etc etc which I find very detailed and technical. Difficult to continue to 'pian-chia' unless you are really working in those fields. I like Equity part most so that's what I'm doing now. To do continue learning on my own in this specific segment of financial market. When you are so young (fresh grad), you are full of energy. So it won't be ze2 shou4. We worked late but partied hard right after OT till 3-4 am. No problem lah. |

I used to be part of big FIVE (this was before AA's demise) last time... but I'm not in the accounting line but on the consulting side. Work like shit .... but learn a lot. Most people cannot tahan after a few years and then quit to find an easier life. |

ah. asterisk. if you're going to mail for a job/internship, then my suggestion is to personalise each mail and not mass mail. you need to key each mail to the right person, say something abt that co's history and what you admire abt them, and why you want to join them. not a general 'dear sir/mdm, i apply' kind of thing. people are like lobsters. they like to be buttered. haha. an accountant?! why?!! every flipping cent needs to balance....act, i don't think most securities research firm would want an intern in. you need to pull strings. meanwhile, at least beef up your TA or FA so you can be of value to them. you need to think cheap and good value when hunting for a job. must come across as a bargain to reel 'em in. keke. |

Asterisk, having worked in one of the Big-Five (then only big Five, not Big Four), I still think it's best to work in Audit Firm first. You get first hand knowledge of how companies cooked up financial statement, what is acceptable and what's not and how it's resolved behind the scene . You slave really hard for 2 years but the knowledge acquired is invaluable. Besides, you get exposure in many industries by auditing different companies. I think it helps made a better researcher in the future. Auditor-trained accountants are highly valued by Banks (all department) and financial institutions.

All of them are pretty established players in town I think. Frankly, I don't think it really matters which ones you join. The idea for industrial attachment is to learn about the industry and find out if you like it. I don't think they'll give you actual "real" work to do because you're there for just a few months. |

I _tan888, I am presently in Taipei, at their Eva air lounge so I only saw your post now. My children are all grown up with children of their. Luckily, my husband and I are self-sufficient. We do not depend on our children although they are always asking us if we have enough. They are good children. I learn from my friends about their children and believe you me, it is scary. I know of grandparents who have to look after their children's children - free labour (of love). I believe that I had done my best for my "kids" and now they have to take care of their own. |

I missed your last post about globalisation and human story... It would appear to me that you are looking at it strictly from a material view. Could your pls explain your assertion in the context of man is also a spirit? I am afraid we may have divergent views as I believe that man is a spiritual being and is only a visitor on this world stage currently in the scene where globalisation is taking rein....

Dear Ipunter, Continuing our discussion re globalisation, I relooking at your recent post on subject of money:
I must quote: Ecclesiastes 5:10 Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless. We must emphasise that the Love (or Worship) of Money will bring us problems |

To my mind, the "human" story and the "globalisation" story is one and the same, since humans are the only players. |

I agree... Spiritually speaking, we need not embrace it and harvest the 'goodies' for our own happiness. |

sorry for the typo errors.. I was distracted by trying to track the shares before it closes for the afternoon... there is good buys a while ago... let me return to globalisation... it is the current driving force in todays world... the love of money..Mormon.. we are just visitors on this world.. we need to understand the way things are but we need not be subject to it... we have a choice.. but we also know our destination we need not be hopeless... |

to my mind the human story is a different story.... when we speak of gloablisation, we are discribing the state of the world.. we are different.... we live in this world but need not neccessarily be of the world... |
