True... Then, since we are not just "economic animals" without human spirit, we should pay equal attention to the human side of evolution too. |

i believe so, Ipunter.. already, I find the westernisation a quaint term.. as we become more materialistic, globalisation becomes the driving force... if one is to advance materially, all things are set aside for globalisation for its core value is an economic one... production of goods at its cheapest, most efficient.. irrespective of any other social value/geographical boundary etc... |

Very soon, much sooner than we can imagine... The word "Westernisation" will be replaced by the word "Globalisation". As knowledge is more and more globally shared and revealed, ancient wisdom and knowledge will shape civilisation's 'future'. |

I will simply look at it detachedly as "social evolution", albeit a sad state of affairs. |

You know in Taiwan, there had been cases of children killing their parents to benefit from their parent's insurance payout. I simply can't bear to think of civilisation degrading to this extent? |

Today's generation is a lot more materialistic and less traditional than yesterday's. In the olden days, having lots of children ensured some kind of financial security in old age. But today, in this westernised society with high costs of living and improved standard of living, children are more often seen as financial and lifestyle liabilities. That's one main reason why Singapore's birth rate is falling. |

choohian, To depend on your children for old age survival is the last thing you would want to do in reality. In today's materialistic world, they would not even have enough to supplement their own family's lavish lifestyle, less to take care of you. Imagine they want all of the 5 Cs. Not surprisingly, almost all (99%) of the old folks I've talked to nowadays, told me that they cannot depend on their children when their old age succumbs. "You'd be glad if you don't get thrown into an old folks home" they'd all say. "Even old folks home costs money you know?" Fortunately, we don't have any children. I'm not trying to be "anti-children", but honestly, after watching my siblings' (and relatives') children, it seems that one will end up with more sacrifices and pains, rather than gains. |

dear Yongjiu.. I think you hit the nail when you used the word singapore girls.. when I post in this forum, at the back of my mind, I am reminded it is a Singapore stage, characters, values.. singaporean.. I wondered how a foreigner would see us: my limited experience tells me Singapore girls are quite different from American, European, African or even Chinese girls... ( I have to thread very carefully here) but I must say for an English speaking forumers, perhaps I have become too globalised, but I am surprised at the strength of Elizabethan/Victorian values displayed in the Fellowship or is this because there are overwhelming baby boomers here..I wondered how many here have read James Joyce's Ulysses. btw, Asterisk, welcome to the fellowship..our resident Elf is too tired to give you a badge but I know she will come around to it soon..In the meantime from me you represent a different singapore generation... but I am surprised that you would post an apology for the things you and Ipunter said.. actually I personally don't see the need for an apology.. mmm |

If you want men to help in housework, then mothers must the first persons to instill in their sons that everyone has to help with housework. Mothers should assign every child a role in the housework. Even better if the roles are rotated among all siblings. Then the men of the next generations will be better husbands. |

In discussions on the topic of gender ie. men/women, conventional
thinking always does not take into consideration the fact that we are
actually spirits (ie. our consciousness) in bodies rather than bodies with spirits. Which means to say a man can think and feel like a woman and vice versa., notwithstanding their bodies. If this is not the case, then how does one explain the phenomenon of homosexuality, for example? To complicate things further, there are also individuals who are physically men and woman (so-called 'shemales' in vulgar parlance). Perhaps this sounds prohibited here too... so no further discussion is necessary. Dear Asterisk... I must say I have wronged you by thinking you are an obsolete chicken who is easily scared away like a frightened mouse in the face of overwhelming prudishness. But since reading your post, I know you are a knowledgeable, intelligent and reasonable person, though... :) |

da gege/victorian...sorry can't rem who posted what....but yea, i'm a long time member of the sgx website. and yes, i'd be interested in which one of you has the info on the cos....was it victorian? if so, could you pls pass your email to my godpa? sorry, really don't wanna post it out here.... stamford land. TA coverage as follows: for past year, lowest px 28c, highest 44c in feb this year. RSI and williams all up, crossing a buy signal soon on MAcrossver. C/O reads a weak buy, A/D actually dithering tho; but long term trend from dec is up. Note a/d and c/o might not be too sensitive to this stock. Interestingly it responds well to fibo. The next target given is ~55c from its recent low of 37c. Which dovetails with its book value of 52c. Might be an early Macqinf, in my opinion. hasn't caught a lot of attention yet. |

hm. asterisk, can understand where you're coming from. for a guy, it's def something befuddling; that you're expected to treat a woman as an equal, yet must pay for dates, hold doors open etcetc or risk being called ungentlemanly. well, not all women are like that. those who are want superiority, not equality. haha. :P and before i get lynched by my fellow womenfolk... lemme just say that it isn't easy for the women too. esp the women here. 8 out of 10 guys here do not do more than 4 hrs of housework a week; burden of raising a child is always the woman's. If a child's sick, the teachers ask for the mother, seldom the father. A guy can work late in his job, but the woman has to go home or risk disapproval from in-laws etc for being 'career-minded'. In addition to holding down a full time job, taking care of both sets of parents/parents-in-law etc. just witness how many of the guys here left the angpowing to their wives. haha. perhaps the trouble is that women did not know what they want. the initial fight for equality i agree with, where it had to do with things like the right to vote, to be educated, to choose family or career, the right not to die when your husband dies (suti/suttee--the hindu custom), the right not to be treated as property or cattle. But honestly, if you ask me, where it comes to the silly things today like having to use the word 'chairperson' instead of 'chairman' since the latter is 'offensive and unequal', then to me, that's plain silliness. and haha, may i give here a quote from an anonymous source: "I am woman! I am invincible! I am pooped!". haha. asterisk. you poor boy. if your trouble's getting a date, then simple. treat the lady like how you'd want her to regard you as. ;) |
