From the point of view of a technician, ie. one who relies on charts, there's really no significant difference (apart from commissions) between "holding" and "buying". Holding simply means you have already bought. In relation to a trend (namely, uptrend or downtrend), buying and selling points are crucial in the quest for profits. If one holds a downtrending stock, it is similar to buying it while it is on it's way down. This includes the practice of averaging down (buying more because it's 'cheaper'). |

hey l_tan888: nice site on the oldies jukebox...reminds me when my dad used to blast the songs.... burntbadbad: I'm not really into TA, but there are some pretty good websites on FA and TA basics which I still frequent to refresh my memory. very good investment resource: http://www.investopedia.com/university/ broker reports: http://www.remisiers.org/ and of course SJ. Just to ask, advisable to go for blue chips at this time? seems most of blue chips are getting black and blue... ..... |

hullo, burntbadbad, welcome to the fellowship. :) don't worry, we're all learning from each other here. and yea. no one can ever be perfect in calling the market. if we could, we'd be alan greenspan. haha. the most impt thing perhaps is to see what the market really is, and not what you want to see... . and don't buy on 'tips' and all that...if you don't do FA, at least learn some basic TA. At the most basic level, if i ask you what the stock's company does, and you say, i don't know, the qn then is: why are you buying it? oh. and stop loss. that's the most impt thing to learn. I'm still practicising it. haha. :) play only with money you can afford to lose. Do differentiate out your shares tho. punting stocks are for short term. in times of correction you'd unload them like crazy. solid fundamental stocks are for long term. in times of correction you'd buy more. hope it helps. :) |

geojam, Ha Ha, how can that be? She already has trouble servicing a shorter than 10-year loan for her new car, where got extra $ to go into shares? Anyway, I'm also not qualified lah as my own experience is still not good. Hv a lot to learn from Elf. Maybe I can pay tuition fees to her??? Elf?? When you're back online tonight, ok ka? |

burntbadbad, I can give you 1 cue. Go to this website: http://stockcharts.com/school/doku.php?id=chart_school:chart_analysis:introduction_to_candlesticks Get a grasp knowledge of the DOJI Candlesticks characteristics. Then go to Yahoo finance to look at the technical charts on those S'pore stocks. Plot the 20 days, 200 days, candlesticks and observe the correlation with the DOJI characteristics. 80% of the time is a turning point. Of course not always 100% correct lah. But it's a very good guidance. And, I always say: Practice STOP LOSS. I didn't do that myself in the beginning and also got burnt bad bad at 1 time. |

A big thank you to senior geojam, tan888 and senior lewsh88 for your replies. I know that there's no such thing as sure win even in a bull market. Read from the SJ forum about the wins and losses. Want to learn and willing to learn but just desparate liao cos lost quite a bit of savings and had to borrow from my mom to tahan first. Quite job few years to care for baby and just wanted to earn some allowance. Terok cos play contra also lost, short also lost. Wins turn into big losses now cos didn't cash out earlier. Anyway very cham la. Think my name here very suitable. Ha ha...lol... Good day to all. |
