Even, if their budget airline were to charge 30% less than their full service SIA, the airfares will still be expensive when compared to airasia and jetstar. Would they be able to compete then. Unless they brand themselves as a medium fare airline rather than a budget airline. I hope management realises this. Wonder if they will list the new airline and give existing SIA shareholders a piece of the pie. |

SIA to set up new no-frills airline  Singapore Airlines (SIA)  has announced its intention to establish a new no-frills, low-fare airline which will operate wide-body aircraft on medium and long-haul routes.
It says the new airline is being established following extensive review and analysis.  SIA says it will enable the group to serve a largely untapped new market and cater to the growing demand among consumers for low-fare travel.  Operations are expected to begin within one year.  The airline will be wholly-owned by Singapore Airlines, but will be operated independently and managed separately.  SIA CEO Goh Choon Phong said there's a new market segment being created and this will provide another growth opportunity for the Group.  He said low-fare airlines flying short-haul routes within Asia, has helped stimulate demand for travel.  Mr Goh says he expects this will also prove true for longer flights.  More details will be announced by the new airline's management team in due course, including its branding, products and services, and route network.  Aviation analyst from Standard and Poor's, Shukor Yusof, expects air fares on the new no-frills carrier to be some 20 to 30 per cent cheaper compared to current SIA economy class fares. " These are fares that are going to capture imagination or going to be attractive to younger people, or to people who are more price-conscious, and who expect better service than what some of the other carriers are offering right now. SIA coming out with this airline would mean a stronger, more efficient, better-run airline that's got a very strong management, that's got the infrastructure, the huge resources required to take a lot of business from its rivals." SIA already runs a short-haul mid-price airline called SilkAir, and owns 32.9 percent of budget carrier Tiger Airways. SIA  has  been  OVER CHARGING  with  OVER FRiLLs  ? ? ? ? Singaporeans  OVER PAYING  for  National Officials' Travel  ? ? ? ? Meritocracy is  tOO frilled  ? ? ? ? |

adds further price pressure on SIA DOW JONES NEWSWIRES The volcanic ash cloud that grounded hundreds of European flights was expected to force cancellations across northern Germany and parts of Scandinavia on Wednesday, after clearing the U.K., which bore the brunt of earlier disruption. Transatlantic services remained largely unaffected as the cloud moved east, affecting services to and from Hamburg, Bremen, Lubeck and Magdeburg. Ryanair Holdings PLC (RYAAY), Europe's largest carrier of airline passengers, said it had cancelled flights in northern Germany until 2:00 p.m. local time on Wednesday. Deutsche Lufthansa AG (DLAKY, DLA.XE) also warned of disruptions it said may extend to Scandinavia. Ireland-based Ryanair continued to question the imposition of a no-fly zone by regulators. U.K. authorities said ash was seen clearing its airspace by 1:00 a.m local time. Glasgow airport said it expected services to resume Wednesday. Edinburgh airport also saw all flights cancelled Tuesday and disruption spread as far as Newcastle in northern England. The latest projections from the Volcanic Ash Advisory Center in London showed ash concentrations deemed unsafe for flying drifting east from central Scotland across the North Sea by midday Wednesday. Iceland's airports reopened and the country's meteorological office said eruptions at the Grimsvotn volcano appear to be subsiding. Most transatlantic services looked set to remain unaffected as high ash concentrations remained north of the main routes between Europe and North America, though a second band extending across Russia forced some planes to be rerouted, according to Eurocontrol, which coordinates air-traffic control in Europe. Airlines affected by the ash cloud will be eager to resume operations as quickly as it is safe to do so. Carriers last year lost millions of euros when clouds of ash from Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano crossed much of Europe, prompting aviation authorities to close roughly 80% of the European Union's airspace. A spokeswoman for Eurocontrol said 500 scheduled flights were expected to be canceled Tuesday for safety reasons. Typically, there are 29,000 flights daily in Europe, she added. Ryanair said it canceled dozens of services from Scotland and northern England on Tuesday at the behest of Irish regulators and maintained that two test flights revealed " no safety threat" from ash, a finding the airline said was supported by the aircraft and engine manufacturers. British Airways, EasyJet (ESYJY, EZJ.LN) and KLM were among those who also canceled services to Scottish airports on Tuesday. Continental Airlines, a unit of United Continental Holdings Inc. (UAL), planned to resume flights from New York to Scotland after cancelling services late Monday. Continental's overnight flights to Oslo and Copenhagen both departed Newark late Tuesday. BA's transatlantic traffic continued, but journeys were subject to brief delays as flights were rerouted to avoid affected areas, said a spokesman for British Airways, which is part of International Consolidated Airlines Group SA (ICAGY, IAG.LN). -By Doug Cameron, Dow Jones Newswires doug.cameron@dowjones.com |

SIA: may track overnight weakness in European airlines, as the threat of volcanic ash from an Icelandic volcano shut European airspace. Shares in German airline Lufthansa plunged by 4.6%, while Air France-KLM fell > 4% at the opening of trading, the biggest loser on the Paris stock market. Intl Airline Group (IAG), the owner of British Airways and Iberia, plunged 3.6% in early trading, and Scandinavian airline SAS dropped 3%, both falling more than their rptve The Grimsvoetn volcano began erupting late on Saturday, with the first ash expected to begin hitting Europe on Tuesday. Denmark has already closed some airspace over Greenland and Norway said it will cancel flights on Monday to the country's Arctic archipelago of Svalbard. Concerns that the ash could damage aircraft engines led authorities to cancel flights as a precaution.. Recall, in Apr ‘10 Iceland's Eyjafjoell volcano erupted, spewing a massive cloud of ash that caused the planet's biggest airspace shutdown since World War II with more than 100k flights cancelled and 8m passengers stranded. When news of the flight cancellations were first announced, SIA gapped down 2% at the market open and closed 3.6% down. The majority of Street has Hold ratings on the stock, following the lackluster 4Q operating performance. Recent TP range btwn $12.35 – 19.00. |

Airlines: Morgan Stanley says in sector note, that operating profit (OP) for Asia Pac airlines has peaked in 2010. Expects OP to fall in 2011 but to diverge sharply between airlines, hence prefers defensive plays. Notes the exceptional air cargo growth in 9M10 has slowed in 4Q10 and 2011, and higher oil prices could lead to a 25-30% decline in OP for this year... Tips best ideas to own: SIA, Tiger, Qantas, Thai and Air Asia. Says avoid: China Airlines, EVA, Cathay Pacific, Air China, China South, and China Eastern. |

SIA: Morgan Stanley rates at Overweight with TP $18.80. Notes potential dividend surprise, with cash building up to $7-9bn in the next 2 years, allowing the carrier to pay an annual DPS of $1 for the next 2 years. Likes SIA for its defensive qualities – a high quality brand franchise and well-capitalized balance sheet. Notes EV/Ebitda of 5x, FY11E P/B of 1.6x, means SIA is trading at compelling mid-cycle valuation. | ||||
