WP Eric Tan quits        The Workers' party's Central Executive Committee member and Party Treasurer Eric Tan has quit.  This was after the Committee chose its assistant webmaster, 34 year-old Gerald Giam to take up its second Non-Constituency MP seat. Both Mr Tan and Mr Giam were part of the WP's East Coast GRC team which earned 45.17 percent of the votes in the ward.  In an exclusive interview with the TODAY newspaper after the committee's meeting last night at Hougang Town Council, Mr Tan said he felt betrayed.  The 55-year old former banker said he was dissappointed with the decision which he said was based on party renewal.  The WP is entitled to 2 NCMP seats - one for Mr Yee Jenn Jong who lost narrowly at Joo Chiat SMC, and the other for one of the five members of the East GRC team.  The WP is expected to officially announce which of its candidates will be accepting the NCMP seats later today.  For more on this, get your copy of the TODAY newspaper. |

Too much advance buying
Colin Tan I have always advised potential new home owners or genuine upgraders that their main motivation to buy a property should be based on need and not greed.
Buying in advance slightly ahead or delaying a purchase for a short period of time is alright but not when it is too far from the period of need.
Buying ahead may mean getting married earlier than planned — when there are still issues to be resolved.
At the other end, in delaying a purchase, there may be opportunity costs that are not quantifiable, such as having children, privacy and shorter commuting times.
It was therefore quite worrying that, despite a significant ramping up of Build-To-Order (BTO) launches over the past several quarters to reach new highs in recent years, the demand for new HDB flats has remained as strong as ever. |

Nip food inflation in the bud — keep stall rental rates in check Letter from Huang Lifen I refer to two earlier letters (“The dirty world of hawker stall rentals,” March 30 and “Why this hawker can’t afford to maintain prices”, April 26). Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has committed to focus on tackling the cost of living. I hope the measures being taken will be sustainable in the long term and not just in the form of a cash handout. Many Singaporeans eat out regularly. Hence, the savings from a cheaper meal would go a long way, especially for the low-income group. As I understand it, the Government has taken pride in sourcing our food supply from various countries and being effective in curbing food inflation here. I applaud this strategy. At the same time, I would like to point out that it is now time to take on inflation caused by increased rentals. While some Members of Parliament have obtained the agreement of hawkers not to increase their prices for the next six months, the latter will be unable to maintain prices should rentals continue to increase. I would ask the National Environment Agency to reconsider the current bidding system of allocating stalls to hawkers and allowing them to sublet. This subletting system is what drives up rentals. [# B A N  UNPRODUCTIVE  SUBLETTING      MIDDLEMAN  STRUCTURE  #] In its place, why not define a rental guide — how much a stall’s rental should be in a given location. Another thing that could be done is to set a selling price for the hawkers to prevent them from overcharging. Once the rental guide is in place, the authorities should establish a reasonable price guide, taking into consideration the price of their raw materials. |

Blast at Benoi Road kills two Neo Chai Chin
Now, Mr Mosleh Uddin’s nephew is dead, three months after arriving in Singapore, the victim of a blast that killed another worker, a 43-year-old Malaysian, and shook a Benoi Road shipyard and its surroundings just after lunch yesterday. The men had been working on a barge undergoing maintenance and were pronounced dead by paramedics from the Singapore Civil Defence Force, which received a call from the public at 1.23pm. The blast shook neighbouring buildings and shattered their windows. An employee of marine repairs firm Goltens across the road said the ceiling boards of her office began falling off. Over 200 Goltens employees could not resume work due to safety concerns and were released early. SINGAPORE — He met his nephew on Sunday in Serangoon, where he advised the 20-year-old Bangladeshi to adhere to safety rules here. |

I wondered how leaders would react: Chuan-Jin But PAP MP felt that call for ruling party to change was something that needed to be said Teo Xuanwei
That was why Brigadier-General (NS) Tan Chuan-Jin was the first among the People’s Action Party (PAP) cadres to explicitly state, at his May 4 lunchtime rally at UOB Plaza, that the ruling party has to change in order to retain the “moral authority” to lead. It was at this same rally that the Prime Minister surprised many with his apologies about the Government’s shortcomings. “When I crafted my speech, I did wonder how the party leadership would take to it,” the Marine Parade Group Representation Constituency (GRC) MP told After some pondering, he went ahead with it. “It was something I’ve expressed all along even during my interviews to enter politics in mid-2008, I had given my feedback (that the way the party does things had to change) frankly. So with the best of intentions, I felt that it was something that needed to be said,” he told A transformation within the PAP has become a buzzword in the aftermath of the ruling party’s loss of Aljunied GRC. Despite the incumbent team, led by Foreign Minister George Yeo, pledging to drive the change from within if re-elected, voters eventually plumped for the Workers’ Party’s team. For BG Tan, 42, the signals of public “frustration, angst perhaps” against the Government’s perceived lack of consultation or high-handedness were evident to him even when he was being considered for candidacy. “Obviously you hear it from friends, family, so that was something I was very conscious of,” he said. When I decided to come in, I was quite clear in my mind this was not a trivial matter ... it cannot be business as usual ... the way we did things needed to be adjusted. Brigadier-General (NS) Tan Chuan-JinSINGAPORE — To this Member of Parliament, political leadership boils down to one simple mantra: Do what is right.Today during an interview after his first Meet-The-People Session on Tuesday.Today. |

Still can serve, but don't want to stand for election again?   You, George and Hui Hua, in fact are still young.   If you all called yourselves getting too old for parliamentary politics (standing for elections and get elected in future) then are you saying that MM is too old at 88 coming this birthday?   Don't say that you all are old, infront of MM ok? Cheers!

‘Man y remain hurt by MM Lee’s remarks’Leong Wee Keat
“You need only ask the Malays and Muslims in Singapore — many were hurt by those remarks and remain so”.Hard Truths to Keep Singapore Going, Mr Zainul, who was a member of the PAP Aljunied GRC team which lost the General Election (GE), made this point to “show how easily the knots of racial harmony in our community can unravel”. “Integration does not only mean living in harmony. There must be equally opportunities for all ... No Singaporean must ever feel alienated, or worse, marginialised,” he told reporters yesterday. Asked about the timing of Mr Lee’s remarks, which were published in the book
Mr Zainul pointed out the remarks had been made two years ago but as the book was only published earlier this year, he acknowledged: “So in that sense, (the) timing was bad for the GE.” SINGAPORE — While Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew felt that his remarks about Malays, Muslims and integration did not affect the Malay vote for the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP), Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Zainul Abidin Rasheed said yesterday: |

Zainul Abidin Rasheed says Aljunied GRC defeat will not change resolve to serve    ®Copyright MediaCorp       Senior Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Zainul Abidin Rasheed says he has always been dedicated to serving the people and the nation, and that the results of the May 7 elections will not change his resolve.  In his first media conference on Thursday (12 May) after the People's Action Party (PAP) team was defeated by the Workers' Party team in Aljunied GRC, Mr Zainul says he will do what he can for so long as he is able.  He says sad as he is with the result, he's energised by the love and concern shown by his family, friends and Aljunied residents who have not voted for the PAP team.  Furthermore, many residents of Aljunied have also come out to say how much they liked and appreciated the efforts of the team.  But there were also many residents who voted based on issues above and beyond Aljunied GRC.  On issues concerning the Malay-Muslim community, Mr Zainul says Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew had felt that his remarks on Malays, Muslims and integration in his recent book, " Hard Truths" , did not affect the Malay support for the PAP negatively.  However, Mr Zainul says Singaporeans need only ask the Malays and Muslims in the country.  He says many were hurt by those remarks and remain so.  Mr Zainul says this goes to show how easily the knots of racial harmony in the community can unravel.  Mr Zainul adds that while it is unlikely he will stand in the next election due to his age, he will leave it to the party to decide.  He will be continue his involvement as Adviser to the Aljunied Grassroots Organisations.  -By S Ramesh |

http://beerbeer.org/?p=1876  Girls Wild Night Out On Fun MPV @ SingaporeJuly 28, 2009 - 6:14 pm
(TheStar Online) -  A MPV, which has been converted to allow its passengers to sing karaoke, have drinks and even hold striptease shows on board, has become the latest craze in Singapore. According to its operator Cos-mosine, bridesmaids would book the MPV to celebrate their best friend’s last night as a single woman by calling men to perform striptease.  Sex toys such as dildos were also provided. “The theme of the MPV is fun,” said a Cosmosine spokesman.  Cosmosine began its operations in April, charging a minimum of S$188 (RM451) for the use of the vehicle.   |

Singapore has to admit of mistakes made when they only encourage MNC and not building up local businesses so when time like now, we are down with no local brand (Taiwan is so successful and they are just about the same time like us but they have Acer... and so many others). When crisis came, bank took our protection away so many went bankrupt, did anyone came to help to overcome the shortcoming if the confident in Singapore is strong? How many Singapore are rich and resourceful? As a Singaporean, I want to strive but I cannot if taxes press on me and limitation circle me that I just can't get out of the box. |
