I also read this article during tea break.....I empathized with Mr Zeng. But let get the point right : a) So got degree big deal. Resigned without a job is absolutely a NO NO. b) 6 1/2 year to get a degree is too long. It is not about a degree, it is about how you have done it. The maximum candidature is not more than 5 years even for part-time. If you cross this, you automatically lost your honour class. If his degree do offer. So I believe it is a Start-Stop-Start-Stop thing. 2~3year course become 6 years. Ya....no money, so stop, no time, so stop....poor planning and no commitment lor. c) Husband protect the wife in the day. Wife protect the husband's soul at night. No money so abort the baby. At 41 years old still have not understand the important basic things like right, wrong, evil, good......blaf. Ya.....it is the wife that wanted abortion. If the wife thinks in this manner, the husband cannot be too far away. Mr Zeng try to stop becos of the continuation of the blood line or some other reasons and not about the rights and the wrongs. This is how I interept it.... d) The resume is badly written. Really.....you just can't be that lousy. You did not sell your strength. e) Too arrogant....he walked into a KTV for a job. Drinking is a must. I will say YES immediately even if I do not know how to drink. After interview, go supermarket and buy 55% alc. and down two bottle for starter. f) Should not have gone to the press with his dirty laudry lor. An ugly story.....on item c). There are North-East CDC, Meet MP Session.....OK, if you don't believe they can help.....how about monster.com.sg, jobDB....so many. I will walk into a petrol Kisok and work as a pump attendent..while I wait for pple to call....really....if I need the money. I will not beg becos I think I can still contribute.......really again. Just my thoughts......again.....it may be totally wrong. BTW, I can't even resigned without my wife endorsement....not because I am a henpick husband. But my income lost will somehow affect the standards of living. She really need to understand the consequences. |

PMETs are those managers/middle managers, generally people with qualifications, but who were retrenched and couldn't get jobs, and most have to work in lowly-paid jobs eg. 12-hoursecurity guards.. |

There are many reasons why a person cannot find a job after 100 applications: the way you write and present your resume, your comms skills, your previous work experiences, salary expectation (3000+) etc..... For his case, we are not sure his type/subject of degree and overall results (Hons/Pass degree?), his previous salary ($1500$2100???) etc.....so it is hard to jump to conclusion. At the same time, we are sympathetic to his plight too. We wish him all the best in future job hunt. In any case, like what the restaurant manager asked him if he had any experience in the service industry, the KTV lounge manager asked if I he was a good drinker...he said no. if you are the employer, what will you do? Singapore is not alone, every other country every other citizen faces the same problem. Look at the stock market, everyone all over the world can come here and trade the shares , they can make you rich and can also dump their shares and withdraw their fund, these people are also "foreign talent" and we have to "play" with them, otherwise where got volume and liquiditiy ??? |

import also not sure if they are good talents or just here to talk talk cannot work. i agree if workers at the low level like construction those cheap and good, executive level many really cannot make it..... so many helpdesk engineers and consultant only waste the job..... not racial discrimation, but we really need to tax these people higher....

i thk we hv "imported" too many Foreign Talents(Indian/China IT workers?)...gosh....how's the garment going to deal with that?...sad story...read on... http://www.edvantage.com.sg/edvantage/news/news/460738/Degree_holder_can_t_find_job_after_sending_out_100_applications.html ================================================== Mr Zeng Yong Guang, 41, studied part-time for six and a half years to get his degree but now he is jobless. Armed with a university degree, he sent out 100 job applications in hope of finding a better job, but is still unemployed after five months of job hunting. Lianhe Wanbao reported that Mr Zeng Yong Guang, 41, studied part-time for six and a half years to get his degree from a private university in Singapore. After leaving his former job as a computer technician in April this year, Mr Zeng has been actively looking for a job in the months since. He and his wife, who live in Seng Kang, have been relying on his wife's monthly salary of $1,500 in the past five months. But after his wife got pregnant, his job hunt became even more urgent. Mr Zeng told Wanbao that he thought looking for a job would be easier with a degree, so he started studying part-time in 2002, and graduated in 2008. So far, his plan has backfired. "For almost half a year, I mailed and emailed more than 100 applications to IT firms, requesting for a salary of $3,000 or more, but I was not even offered an interview." With no income for the past few months, Mr Zeng has found it hard to pay for daily expenses. Eventually, he had to pawn a watch and diamond ring - gifts from him to his wife - just to pay for their utilities. He says that he has lowered his expectations, and now just wants a stable income to support his family. "We have been fighting a lot about money recently. She said I have not been proactive enough in my job hunt," said Mr Zeng. He also says that the couple, who have been married for 12 years, have always had a good relationship until he became unemployed. Worried about their finances, his wife even wanted to go for an abortion as she was not sure they could afford to care for the baby. But Mr Zeng says that he managed to dissuade her from doing that and hopes to find a job soon so they can start saving up for the baby. Due to the financial pressure he is facing, he even told potential employers he only has an O level certificate in the hope of finding a job to tide them over. So far, that has also yielded no results. "The restaurant manager asked me if I had any experience in the service industry, the KTV lounge manager asked me if I was a good drinker. When I said no, they lost interest. They are also not willing to let me start afresh." Mr Zeng told Wanbao that he knows companies today want qualified and young applicants who are willing to work for lower salaries, and he feels that his age is a disadvantage when looking for a job. But despite that, he stressed that he is willing to learn, and work hard, and hopes that some company out there will give him a chance to prove himself. |
