This Tiger Year really brought so much troubles. European financial troubles and Euro currency crisis. Then so many deaths in Thailand in their mini civil war. China has its share of floods and earthquakes and Indonesia and The Philippines too. More on the human side and less the acts of God, we see political changes in Britian, Australia, The Phillippines and a few African nations, huanted by the yings of the tiger year. In Singapore, we have just a few minor troubles, but we are still intact as a whole. But we must be mindful that there is still half a year to go before the tiger goes to sleep. We go on but lets hope nothing more unpleasant happens to us this second half of our fearsome tiger.... Cheers.

Yes this is true. Especially on roads where large trees with overlapping foliage radius lined side by side would form a perfect "wind tunnel" along the road. High speed wind dun always travel in straight line, many actually swirl along, especially if there is a tunnel/channel like pathway for them. The sheer "swirling" actually could creates a centripedal force that "suck" inwards and bend these trees which are too weak at their bases.

It is fated, if one is destined to die in a unusual circumstances. God Will. Remember, many many years back, one of the farmers in Seletar, while doing his business in the toilet, he was killed by aircraft. |

Likely, u will observe that the fallen giant trees hv shorter roots. This is because these trees, esp those planted along the roadside, they were migrated from, ie nurseries or jungles and planted there. Normally, the roots were trimmed, if too long for transportation n limited space for planting at road side. Likely they were not planted from shoot. Hence, the main roots were not properly nutured, as compared to those at tropical tree area, ie Changi Hill, Upper Thomson jungle, Sembawang Park, Bukit Timah Hill etc. Hence, those migrated trees are prone to topple, once the loosen soil are unable to hole the weight. It is more prone, if the giant tree trunks on top are weight lop-sided, it causes a First Class Level Force action and tilt the tree easily over one side and uproot it with ease. It is uncommon to see the same size of tree uproot in the jungles. AK is fr kampong, above r my guess only lah, jagan tention, carrying on happy driving lah. Avoid thunderstorm could reduce risk mah. PS. The moral of the story, take MRT loh, no tree issue, moreover on the road, even taking double decker bus, also kena lorry metal level incidence, causing fatal death liao. Cheers. |

First, lightning struck the Merlion, our Singapore icon. Then lightning struck our Singapore Flyer, another Singapore icon. Now the floods, trees falling everywhere and cranes crashing into buses killing innocent people. Looks likes we got a handful. Anyway my deepest sympathy to the victims and their families |

Indeed really sad. Yesterday's case of accidental death by being crushed by a fallen tree is really sad and tragic. My condolence goes to the bereaved family. A pity a young promising life has been lost. In recent months during stormy weather, a number of trees had uprooted and caused traffic jams, but luckily did not cause injury. The authorities should pay more attention to inspect all trees along public roads or parks to ensure that they are not precarious otherwise they should be felled, chopped or trimmed for safety. Another point to note in planting trees is to make sure that when they grow up, they will tilt a slight degree if possible away from public roads, esp for trees that are brittle in their characteristics. When a falling tree is about to land, it is impossible for a motorist to escape it even if he senses it when there are other cars infront or behind, whereas an individual could see the danger and avoid its falling path. All of us should be careful in bad weather and mindful of falling trees or branches when using the road or when we happen to be in the parks .

A very sad case, this one. And it's not any fault of his. Now, big trees in those areas which recently flooded more than once in close succession are particularly dangerous. since the wet and loosened soil underneath may not have sufficient time to dry out and were then flooded yet once more. Frequent flooding before soil dries out will loosen the same tree roots even more, thus making them more dangerous to human lives. |

As a good citizen of Singapore, I'll give some technical hint : i.e. Common technical error of cutting the lower part of the tree branches, this will raise higher centre gravity of the said tree, hence, caused longer topple moment arm and effected the destructive stress concentration induced in the internal root of the tree.

Have we offended the 'Tree God' ? The recent case about 1 died 8 injured by the crane tumbling down and hit the double decker bus while cutting the tree branches.... ' Dont walk underneath those big and tall trees during heavy rains as its falling branches can kill also. |
