Oil below USD 54 today ....... ----------- FUTURES MOVERS Pressure back on crude over weather, supplies Oil is now down 11% since the beginning of the year By Ciara Linnane, MarketWatch Last Update: 8:52 AM ET Jan 9, 2007 NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Crude-oil futures tumbled anew early Tuesday, pressured by continued above-normal temperatures in the northeastern U.S. and expectations that this week's supply data will show the first increase in crude inventories in seven weeks. Crude for February delivery last traded down $1.95, or 3.5%, at $54.14 a barrel in electronic dealings, after touching a low of $53.88 -- its lowest level since June 2005. The contract has lost a full 11% of its value since the beginning of the year. ---------------- NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Crude-oil futures tumbled anew early Tuesday, pressured by continued above-normal temperatures in the northeastern U.S. and expectations that this week's supply data will show the first increase in crude inventories in seven weeks. Tumbling oil prices remain the primary source of early support for investors. However, with BP plc (BP) saying Q4 production and profitability fell from a year earlier, further deterioration in oil also serves as a reminder that earnings estimates for the engine behind double-digit profit growth for the S&P 500 for so many quarters (Energy) will likely be revised lower. Thus, the subsequent loss of leadership throughout the Energy sector today may act as somewhat of an offset and minimize blue-chip gains.

Shiok! --------------- MARKET SNAPSHOT U.S. stocks to trade higher at the opening Investors hope for announcement about Apple's much-awaited phone By Leslie Wines, MarketWatch Last Update: 9:13 AM ET Jan 9, 2007 NEW YORK (MarketWatch) - U.S. stocks are set for a higher opening Tuesday as investors take in a 3% drop in crude futures and a report that Apple Computer and Cingular Wireless may team up to offer a much-awaited iPhone. On Monday stocks closed higher, after comments by a Federal Reserve official helped soothe economic concerns. The futures contract for the Dow last was up 33 points at 12,525. Futures contracts for the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100 were up 2.10 points at 1,424.60 and up 4 points at 1,807.5. At Tuesday's opening, investors are expected to try to extend Monday's gains. "The market wants to trade higher," said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at Jefferies & Co. "We haven't really had any upside so far this year. There are concerns about how much the economy is slowing. But I would say that we have run out of selling pressure." "There is more good news than bad news," Hogan continued. "GE is looking to sell its plastics unit and there is the possibility that Gap will be taken out. And energy prices have stabilized at lower levels. In the long run, that has to be good for corporate earnings." The fourth-quarter earnings season kicks off after the close of trade with Alcoa's latest results. A report from the Associated Press said a similar smell was encountered across the river in New Jersey and that part of the PATH commuter train system, which runs between Manhattan and Jersey City, Hoboken, Newark and Weehawken, has been shut down due to the smell. ---------------

x 0 x 0 Alert Admin	MARKET SNAPSHOT Commodities to set market tone next week Stocks will be hurt if the carnage in the energy and metal pits continues By Ciara Linnane, MarketWatch Last Update: 10:24 AM ET Jan 6, 2007 NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- U.S. stocks are likely to fall next week if the carnage in the commodity markets continues, hurting mining, oil and material shares which account for almost half of the broad-based S&P 500 index. The heavy losses suffered by energy and metals futures this week were badly timed, coming as aluminum giant Alcoa Inc. prepares to report its fourth-quarter earnings on Tuesday, marking the launch of the season. Analysts are expecting the world's biggest aluminum producer's report to provide insight into the length and severity of the U.S. manufacturing slowdown. "A lot will depend next week on whether the oil sector can hold up, with oil staying above $55 a barrel," said Paul Mendelsohn, chief investment strategist at Windham Financial Services. "Energy and materials account for 45% of the S&P 500, so it's hard to get an up market if you don't have those sectors rising." The slide in oil and metal prices weighed on the stock market this week and left some economists wondering if it's a signal that a severe slowdown is underway. See full story. Some of the week's data supported the slowdown argument, notably a series of lackluster reports from the nation's retailers on the holiday shopping season. The minutes of the Federal Reserve's December meeting showed policymakers remained most focused on inflation although they also acknowledged that the economy may have been a "touch softer" than they had thought. "Barring an unexpectedly huge deterioration in the trade gap in November and December, the net export component of real GDP is going to add substantially to growth in Q4," said Joshua Shapiro, chief U.S. economist at MFR. On Monday, Fed Vice Chairman Donald Kohn is scheduled to deliver a speech on the economic outlook. On Thursday, New York Fed President Timothy Geithner is to make a speech on the global economy and its implications for the US, and Fed Governor Susan Bies will delivery an address on risk management. The bond market will close early Friday in advance of the Martin Luther King holiday the following Monday (15th Jan). -----------------
