$70m in entry levies collected from casino operators
05:55 AM May 19, 2010
As of May 10, the two casino operators had collected about $70 million in entry levies.
Revealing this yesterday, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports Vivian Balakrishnan said it would be "premature to draw conclusions" from such data on casino patronage and its "attendant social impact", as it was still early days yet in their operations. All the levies go to the Singapore Totalisator Board to fund projects that benefit the community, Dr Balakrishnan added, in a written response to a query from Nominated MP Terry Lee. MCYS will ensure enough resources are dedicated to tackle the issue of problem gambling. In response to MediaCorp's queries, the National Council on Problem Gambling said it has been actively engaging Marina Bay Sands (MBS) and Resorts World Sentosa (RWS) to put in place social safeguards. The council cited some of the measures taken, describing these as "work in progress". - Responsible gambling brochures: Available in both casinos - Council's helpline card: Placed in restrooms and brochure distribution points, at both casinos - Voluntary loss limit: At RWS, patrons can request use of voluntary loss limit room to lock their valuables in security boxes that can only be opened with the casino staff's assistance. At MBS, patrons can request to set a limit on their betting account that cannot be changed for 24 hours. - On-site intervention: At RWS, available on Saturday afternoons. None at MBS. - Responsible gambling training: At RWS, provided to all casino staff. At MBS, given to all staff. - Responsible gambling messages: Shown on all jackpot digital machine screens, plus side-screens on table games or standing digital displays. |

“THIS record is about greed, vengeance and feminism,” Hole singer Courtney Love said of the songs on the first album from Hole in more than a decade (since 1998’s three-time Grammy-nominated Of course, Love is the only member of that original outfit — bassist Melissa Auf de Maur, although initially said to be working on the album, isn’t present at all, and neither is guitarist and Hole co-founder Eric Erlandson. Working with producer Michael Beinhom, Billy Corgan and Linda Perry has turned Love’s initial collection of acoustic, folky tunes into something bigger and badder, although you will be disappointed if you expect anything like Most of the songs here actually tend to sound like updates. The pushing rhythms of Although “It’s time for me to be a man / Idon’t care what it takes my friend/ I will never go hungry again,” she sings on Despite how the songs are dressed up, the album is as raw as it gets. Celebrity Skin). And, yes, there is a little bit of that. But, mostly, it sounds like a revealing of Love and what has happened to her in the last five years.Live Through This. Love sounds tired and ragged — think Stevie Nicks meets Marianne Faithfull — but somewhere deep inside, the rocker’s spirit still burns with an unrepentant flame.Pacific Coast Highway, for example, sound like the sequel to Malibu, while the grinding sweep of the title track comes across like a summation of Love’s musical life. The original acoustic premise is still very prominent, despite the addition of drums, bass and overdriven guitar. You can almost see Love sitting alone in her room furiously strumming on her guitar on Never Go Hungry, For Once In Your Life or How Dirty Girls Get Clean.Nobody’s Daughter isn’t as ballsy as the previous Hole releases, the songs are somehow meaner, and they do take some getting used to. But Love is nobody’s fool, and she knows what she’s doing, even as she bears her soul.Never Go Hungry.

oh yes, Ang mo's NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION is not very good . Some ang mo friends very 'stingy'. When they came here, we treated them to nice restaurants, drinking session, by sacrificing our family time to take them out. but, When we went to their country, they didnt reciprocate. as in, you die there your own problem. On contrary, their verbal communication is super good... Hi, buddy, sweety, hows your day...Good day, buddy, have a nice weekend.......blah... hahaha!

MBS has that unmistakable modern classy feel to it the moment one enters in the interior, whereas Genting somehow exudes a more 'downmarket' chracter which can remind one of the olden-day gambling houses we see in the movies... If I am a high roller, I will definitely go for Sands on a permanent basis... |

In term of ambience, MBS is better than RWS especially you dont feel hot and smoky as compared to RWS. But the setback for MBS is that the food is more costly and parking charge is on the high side. Overall, MBS is better than RWS whereby you dont need to wait to find a place to sit for play. It is not squeezy and so pack as in RWS as the number of table games and jackpot machines are more than RWS. |

I suspect this is due to a difference in cultural perception... Maybe the management should be looking into catering to the idiosyncracies of the locals too.. |

You have to wait at the doorway and snatch a coffee or milo when the trolley is pushed out by phil ladies... thumb down for the ang moh in terms of welfare for gamblers... Also, did not see any progressive jackpot more than a million dollar.. Genting Highlands in Malaysia is the best for taking care of gamblers' welfare, ie. stomach -- no wonder they are so successful...

With your complaint that they never serve coffee after having paid $100 entrance fee, next time, they will serve WINE to those who need to pay $100 entrance fee. hehehe MBS layout is genenrally more 'accident prone' cos there are 2 levels unlike Genting, the upper level is only meant for VIPS. Was told one classic case in turf club where one member , at the end of the horse races, literally 'walked through' a panel of the glass...

A weekend at the two IRs We spent the weekend at the two integrated resorts (IR), visiting both Resorts World Singapore (RWS) and Marina Bay Sands (MBS) on six different occasions. All in, we saw considerably more action at both casinos vis-à-vis our previous weekday visit. More importantly, RWS’s casino appears to be holding up well despite losing its monopoly. While we are disappointed at RWS’s still-low table count and its limited ability to operate more tables especially during peak hours, this is partly compensated by the strong betting patterns. Meanwhile, observations at MBS’s mass gaming area revealed that i) it is operating up to 400 tables during peak hours, ii) betting patterns are moderate to strong, iii) the crowd seemed less intense than at RWS but this is because of its bigger space, and iv) mixwise, we saw more non-Asian patrons at MBS than at RWS. It is still too early to make any conclusive remarks now, though initial observations suggest that MBS’s entry is enlarging Singapore’s gaming pie rather than cannibalising RWS’s share. We keep our FY10-12 core earnings estimates and end-CY10 SOP-based target price of S$1.23 for Genting Singapore. We reiterate our OUTPERFORM call. Observations and comments It has been almost two weeks since Singapore’s second IR opened its doors to the public. Over the weekend, we spent some time at the mass gaming floor of RWS and MBS. We were at both establishments during the peak hours of Friday and Saturday night. We also visited both properties on Saturday afternoon. Below are key observations and comments from our visit: • visits but we saw a short line building up on the foreigners’ entry lane at RWS during our Saturday afternoon visit (Figure 1a). We suspect this was probably a tour group. For MBS, the absence of long queues was expected given its four entry/exit points. This time around, MBS appeared to have implemented three different passport check-points for foreigners (Figure 1b). This could have created the illusion of a slight queue as we waited in line for our passports to be scanned during two of our visits. Queues – There were hardly any long queues at the casino entrances during our• Crowd intensity – All in, we were at the two casinos on six different occasions over
•
MBS on Friday night. This is at the lower end of the 350-400 tables estimated during
its debut. Meanwhile, this figure is also lower than the figure of 442 mass gaming
tables highlighted by management during Las Vegas Sands’s earnings call last
week. On Saturday night, however, there were visibly more operating tables. Even
at midnight, we saw employees opening up new tables. A rough table count
revealed close to 400 tables operating on Saturday night. Over at RWS, our rough
count estimated that the number of mass gaming tables remained low at about 150-
200. This excludes the electronic table gaming machines, which collectively offer
some 100-150 terminals for Baccarat and Roulette. We are slightly disappointed at
the still-low table count and RWS’s limited ability to operate more tables especially
during peak hours. Although we acknowledge that new properties need time to ramp
up, RWS’s current mass table count was relatively unchanged from our mid-Mar
update. While we had earlier attributed the modest table count to management’s
yield emphasis strategy, we now believe that the more likely explanation could be
staff-related. For FY10, our table count estimate stands at 500, lower than
consensus and management’s earlier guidance of 700-800 tables. Hence, we are
sticking to our earnings forecasts. •
betting patterns were strong with most wagers being much higher than the minimum
bets. This was especially so at RWS. We saw more S$25 minimum bet tables at
MBS than at RWS. There were even a handful of S$200 minimum bet Baccarat
tables at RWS and these were decently occupied even during our afternoon visit. In
a way, RWS’s slower-than-expected table count is partly compensated by the
stronger-than-expected betting patterns observed so far. [ 3 ] Valuation and recommendation Still early but encouraging observations so far.
IRs have been encouraging. We saw considerably more action at both casinos vis-àvis
our previous weekday visit. More importantly, contrary to earlier expectations,
RWS’s casino operations appear to be holding up well despite the shift from its
previous monopoly status. While we are disappointed at RWS’s still-low table count
and its limited ability to operate more tables especially during peak hours, this is partly
compensated by its stronger-than-expected betting patterns. Meanwhile, observations
at MBS’s mass gaming area revealed that i) it is operating up to 400 tables during
peak hours, ii) betting patterns are relatively strong, iii) the gaming crowd seemed less
intense than at RWS but this is because of MBS’s bigger space, and iv) mixwise, we
saw more non-Asian patrons at MBS than at RWS. MBS to expand pie rather than cannibalise?
make any conclusive remarks following MBS’s debut, though initial observations
suggest that MBS’s entry is helping to enlarge Singapore’s gaming pie rather than
cannibalise RWS’s share. We believe that both properties have different propositions
and would reach out to different market segments. Reiterate OUTPERFORM.
and end-CY10 SOP-based target price of S$1.23 for Genting Singapore. Potential key
re-rating catalysts include i) quicker-than-expected ramp up, ii) confirmation of solid
gaming data points in its 1QFY10 results announcement this Thursday, and iii) lessthan-
expected shifts of punting interests to MBS. We reiterate our OUTPERFORM
the weekend. For both casinos, the crowd was probably most intense on Saturday night. This was not surprising. On the surface, the punting crowd at MBS seemed less intense compared with its competitor but this was probably because of MBS’s more spacious casino layout where the crowds were better spread across the two levels of mass gaming area. The higher number of operating tables could have also helped reduce MBS’s crowd concentration. At RWS, we hardly saw any empty seats at the operating gaming tables, especially on Saturday night. For some tables, punters were standing at up to three layers. Trying to locate an empty terminal at the slot machine section also proved challenging. Overall, we suspect the number of mass gamers was probably slightly higher at MBS. In comparison to our previous weekday visit, there were considerably more punting activities at both casinos. Contrary to earlier expectations, RWS appears to be holding up well despite the shift from its previous monopoly status. Mixwise, we saw more non-Asian patrons at MBS than at RWS. Although we acknowledge the different Asian/non-Asian mix, both casinos are still largely Asian-centric. |
