from SGX. In February 2009, Singapore Airlines recorded a year-on-year decline in systemwide passenger carriage (measured in revenue passenger kilometres) of 17.0%, which outpaced the reduction in capacity (measured in available seat kilometres) of 8.5%. As a result, passenger load factor (PLF) declined 7.1 percentage points to 69.7%. The number of passengers carried decreased 20.2% over the same month last year, to 1.2 million. The year-on-year capacity contraction resulted from the planned reduction in frequencies across route regions due to the falling demand as well as the introduction of the smaller B777-300ER on the San Francisco service (via Hong Kong). Additionally, the termination of Los Angeles (via Taipei), Osaka (via Bangkok) and Amritsar services also contributed to the capacity reduction. All route regions recorded declines in PLFs. The prevailing global economic crisis has significantly dampened travel demand, translating to weaker uplifts. This was in contrast to the performance in February 2008, which was supported by the Chinese New Year holiday peak, the Changi Airshow and the additional day in the leap year. Singapore Airlines will continue to monitor traffic movement and make appropriate adjustments to its route network where necessary to match capacity to demand |

i agreed that future is pretty grim for SIA, just that it's like a branded goods you know, something I wanted to have for a long time haha.. And i find it still pretty resilient despite all the bad news.. But I think I might have to throw it if I have a chance cos I also believe it will go down further.. | ||

Not sure, AK opines that is it a better choice to go for cheaper n strong stocks at this moment? Ie , GAR, BIO, Hyflux Trust, Epure etc? One UOB or even SIA , can buy decades of peny stock? AK may not be right lah, just sharing my view only. No call for anything lah. Above no call for anything, just for info. AK had done some action weeks ago. |

my opinion for this sia.... economy ahead gonna bad => corporate cut travelling => -ve flight not fully filled => less revenue => less profit => -ve though oil is low now, sia probably hedge at high px => -ve dun think px reflecting the doom & gloom yet.... also will wait for 20% drop before value emerge... |

oh, i thought it's the other way round eg. as long as 1st class and biz class filled, they would have made money.. Economy was abt 80-90% filled, it was a A380. I read other postings seems like flights to other ctries are miserable, abt 30% filled etc.. Strange, perhaps india has more opportunities compared to other ctries.. and maybe middle east too.. |

I was once told that for SIA to make money, the economy class must be filled. Then the first and business will be the profit. So is the econ class also full on your flight back ?

Yeah, co. will try to reduce unnecc flying, but certain meetings you still can't do it over VC. However SQ branding is very strong, hopefully the angmos in MNC still insist on flying SIA. I came back fr Mumbai on Friday. The flight was also quite full and surprisingly biz class was quite filled up too. Of cos, think they cancelled many flights too but I was quite surprised abt the biz class.. 1 gd thing, I found that SIA service has improved now compared to the good time ;) inflight svc as well as the counter svc.. |

Very difficult condition. Many of my friend Q mtg in US and Europe has been indefinitely. Used to fly to customer even if the sale lead is not strong. Rub some shoulder and warm handshake.....now rub until the shoulder bruised also cannot get sale. So company also stop fly salemen. Use Singtel conferencing center instead.....Good for Singtel perhaps. We even ask customer to visit us instead.... Singapore small population also difficult to support SIA loh.

Maintain TRADING SELL, with no change to earnings or target price of S$7.60. Yesterday we downgraded our call from Neutral, slashed FY10 forecast by 63% and lowered the target from S$12.60, as a result of the weaker than expected demand for air travel, reflected by the urgency in SIA’s capacity cuts. Given the severity of the demand downturn, and the signals sent out by SIA’s major capacity cuts, SIA could trade below its book valuations for a while. Although its current share price reflects a 20% discount to NTA, we believe that in the near term, the stock could fall to as low as a 40% discount, which was last reached in August 1998 at the height of the Asian financial crisis. Hence, although we continue to believe that SIA should be priced at 0.8-1x P/NTA (S$10-12.60) once the economic cloud clears by the end of the year, we recognise that poor sentiment over the next three months could push down its share price to its lowest levels in a decade. We are setting our 3-month target at 0.6x P/NTA, or S$7.60. Our FY10 EPS forecast is 70% below consensus. CIMB 18Feb09 |
