Chartered Posts Biggest Loss in Almost Seven Years (Update1) plus retrench 600 staff. (Adds investor comment in fourth paragraph.) By Andrea Tan Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) – Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing Ltd., the world’s third-largest custom-chip maker, reported its biggest loss in almost seven years and will eliminate 600 workers amid a deepening global recession. The fourth-quarter net loss was $114 million, or 46 cents per American depositary receipt, compared with a profit of $5.9 million, or 1 cent, a year earlier, the Singapore-based company said in a statement today. That missed the $81 million median loss estimate in a Bloomberg survey of five analysts. Sales slipped 0.3 percent to $351.7 million. Chartered’s loss reflects the slump in electronics demand as clients including Microsoft Corp. cut costs and consumers curb spending amid the economic slowdown. The Singapore chipmaker, which has trimmed pay and fired workers to cope with falling orders, said losses this quarter will probably widen as demand shrinks further. “Demand’s not coming back,” Stuart O’Gorman, who helps manage $800 million in technology shares at Henderson Global Investors Ltd. in Edinburgh, said before the earnings announcement. “Most of the chipmakers are going to go out of business and it’s a very long road.” Chartered, which makes chips used to power Microsoft’s Xbox 360 game console, fell 4.1 percent to close at 23.5 Singapore cents yesterday. |

Sound like you have not been following news in the last 3-6 mths...hehehe! We cannot short any counters if we do not have the scripts to deliver at the end of the day. What you are suggesting is naked short and you will be fined for that ($1000+higher brokerage). All shorts positions MUST be covered back at the end of the day. The only way is by CFD, borrowing scrips from your brokers, with a fee. With CFD, you can hold short positions up to 30 days, and CFD will renew your contract.

From BT Chartered's head of sales and marketing resigns

Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing has announced that its senior vice president of sales and marketing Ang Kay Chai has resigned for 'personal reasons'. The company said it has started a global talent hunt for a successor to fill the position when he leaves the company at the end of February. Mr Ang was appointed to his current role in April 2007 after previously serving as Chartered's senior vice president of fab operations. Like most chipmakers, Chartered is battling against the double-whammy of a semiconductor glut as well as a reduction in chip demand as a result of the current economic downturn. The firm has warned that it would report a net loss of between US$76 million and US$84 million for the fourth quarter ended Dec 31, 2008.

Better dun take any chance of shorting this fellow. It's anytime possible that they come out and announce new development. In which event, the counter will be halted for trading pending the announcement. If anyone shorted before they call for trading halt, and not sold off at the end of the trading day, there is a penalty of $1000+higher brokerage. | ||||||||

Takeover rumours come again, and the standard answers from Chartered is "I dunno". For sure they will decline whatever rumours... lets see if it will be "halted" after closing today, coz normally they like to halt it during the last day of the week and make announcement. Better dun short la.... dun againts the market trend ...... |
