The Fed is in a very difficult position now. It can't increase rates yet because the economy is still in turmoil. But it also can't decrease rates because of soaring inflation.

The Dow has fallen nearly 460 points in the last two sessions and reached its lowest point since September 2006. Investors again contended Friday with a seemingly relentless stream of troubling news about the financial sector. Moody's Investors Service said it is reviewing investment bank Morgan Stanley for a possible downgrade. There were also more reports that Merrill Lynch & Co. might have to write off nearly $6 billion of risky mortgage-backed debt.
Investors got little solace from economic data released on Friday. The Commerce Department said spending rose 0.8 percent in May, as taxpayers started receiving their stimulus checks. The increase was higher than the 0.7 percent economists predicted. The report also said personal incomes surged 1.9 percent -- significantly more than anticipated. After taxes, incomes surged 5.7 percent, the largest amount in 33 years. |

at times like this...a part of us hope tt it can be one time painful one then faster rebound off the support level and go back upwards...some mentioned 11,000 support...while some see it at just above 10,700+ region as a very strong support anyway in terms of economy recovery, the stocks market see it ard six mths in advance |

Energy A rebound from that selloff looked unlikely as oil prices rose to yet another record. Crude futures rose as high as $142.22 a barrel in electronic trading Friday, before paring gains. "It will be another down day but not as steep as yesterday," Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Avalon Partners, predicted. Economy The Commerce Department announced a 1.9% gain in personal income, which it attributed to the government's stimulus checks. But excluding stimulus payments, personal income rose only 0.4%, which had been anticipated by a poll of economists by Briefing.com. Company news Smartphone maker Palm (PALM) reported a quarterly loss after the closing bell Thursday that was larger than expected. Palm reported adjusted earnings of 15 cents per share, compared to analysts' expectations of 18 cents per share for its fiscal fourth quarter. The loss was driven by a 26% decline in revenue. General Motors (GM, Fortune 500) shares could be on the move again after sinking nearly 11% Thursday to the lowest level in more than 33 years after Goldman Sachs downgraded the automaker. Other markets In global trade, Asian markets followed Wall Street lower, with Japan's benchmark Nikkei index tumbling 2%. European shares also dropped in midday trading.

June 27 (Bloomberg) -- Crude oil fell in New York, as traders sold contracts to lock-in profits from a more than $5 a barrel gain.
Crude oil may fall next week because of rising supplies and declining fuel demand in the U.S., the country responsible for almost a quarter of global consumption. Investors wil close their positions before long Independence Day Holiday. Investors sold futures after the U.S. House of Representatives approved a bill requiring the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to curb excessive market speculation The U.S. House of Representatives approved a measure requiring the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to use its emergency authority to curb excessive speculation in energy markets. The bill, passed on a 402-19 vote, would require the commission to consider using existing powers such as limiting the size of the stake that each speculative investor can hold in a market, also known as position limits, and raising the money needed to trade, or the so-called margin requirements. The vote came just hours before members of Congress left Washington to face voters angry about gasoline prices during a week-long recess to celebrate the July 4 Independence Day holiday. Eleven of 24 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News, or 46 percent, said prices will decline through July 3. Nine of the respondents, or 38 percent, said oil will rise and four forecast little change. ``Demand in the U.S. has certainly been weakening,'' said Victor Shum, senior principal at Purvin & Gertz Inc. in Singapore. ``If there is a clear indication of demand falling in some of the key developing markets, like China, then there will be more significant pull back in oil prices.'' U.S. crude-oil inventories gained 803,000 barrels to 301.8 million last week, the Energy Department said in a June 25 report. wondering will it work?that is control oil px., but think short term may work, over the long run speculator come out winner.

ak.. i too time-oout leow.. can't stand the market heat. next week, not forget to trf cpf-oa fund to cpf-ra. It seem no different do early or late in the month of jul. Either way, the transferred amt seem to earn no interest in july. Is my understanding correct.
