KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 (Bernama) -- The government will not allow the clearing of forest areas for any new oil palm plantations, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said Tuesday. He said this is avoid the accusations being made by some western parties that the opening of oil palm plantations was destroying the forest and the ecosystems. "We realise there are campaigns being carried out by some non-governmental organisations in the west to spread negative news about us as they think that the oil palm plantations are a result of forest clearing which is also endangering the existence of orang utan," he told reporters here Tuesday. Abdullah, who is also Finance Minister said the existing oil palm plantations were enough to cater to current demands and there was no need for the opening of new plantations at the moment. There are currently 4.3 million hectares of oil palm plantation land in the country. "We don't have to reduce the protected forest to increase new oil palm plantations. "We have proof. With more effective management of the plantations and new technologies, production can go up by 30 percent," he said after chairing the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on the competitiveness of the country's oil palm. He said continued research and development will also result in value added products in the industry. On the expansion of the biofuel industry, he said: "This will depend on the investors, on whether they want to produce palm oil as a fuel material. The high price of world crude oil will be a major determinant on whether they produce oil palm based fuel." On whether he was concerned with the increasing palm oil price, he said: "As far as we are concerned, price of oil (palm oil) is our wealth. As for cooking oil, it is a controlled food item."

x 0   x 0  Alert Admin	Monday June 23, 2008 OPTIMISTIC PALM OIL PRICE FORECAST While the global economy is viewed with pessimism on all continents, oil palm continues to flourish on an island of optimism. Hence, several brokerages and a public-listed planter last week raised their forecasts for palm oil prices. IJM Plantations Bhd is understood to hold the view that crude palm oil (CPO) prices could hit RM4,000 a tonne again in the second half of the year. The basis for this is believed to be the floods in the US Mid-West that would further tighten global supplies of vegetable oils. Its view of the average price for the next 18 months is at least RM3,500. Citigroup raised its forecast from RM3,100 a tonne to RM3,300 for next year while PT AmCapital Indonesia raised its forecast for CPO to about RM3,300 for next year. In a note last week, Goldman Sachs said CPO is undervalued relative to crude oil and soybean oil which have risen 17% and 7% respectively over the last two months while the CPO price was up just 1%. “We see more upside for CPO prices over the next three to six months,” it said. One would expect, however, the new US president, taking office next year, to remove mandatory blending of corn ethanol with petrol. This is likely in the face of pressure from several international agencies. That would reduce the demand for corn, ease the fight-for-acreage situation and reduce prices for the main US food crops - corn, wheat and soybean. However, there could still be some conversion of corn ethanol as a biofuel substitute for high-priced petrol.

x 0   x 0  Alert Admin	Monday June 23, 2008 Huge cash pile in plantation companies By YVONNE TAN IT is no secret that plantation companies have been reaping large profits, underpinned by the rally in crude palm oil (CPO) prices in recent months. Some have been using their hoards of cash to make fresh land acquisitions and undertake share buybacks while others prefer to hold on to their cash. Conglomerate IOI Corp Bhd for example had stepped up its share buyback from only 1.86 million shares in early January to more than 148.11 million shares now. Genting Bhd-controlled Asiatic Development Bhd, with a cash pile of RM263.9mil as at March 31, recently announced plans to acquire 45,000ha of land in Indonesia while Hap Seng Plantations Holdings Bhd proposed earlier this month to acquire 727ha of land in Sabah from Bumilaju Construction Sdn Bhd for RM42mil. “Hap Seng's acquisition could signal the start of more acquisitions, which is the key upside catalyst for the stock besides capital management given its rising cash pile,” JP Morgan said in a report. For other plantation companies, “cash conservation” seems to be the key word as they brace for a decline in CPO prices from the heady above RM4,000 per tonne price to an average of RM2,800 a tonne in the second half this year.

Estimates of the damage to farmland throughout the Midwest ranged from 2 million to 5 million acres of crops, pushing corn prices close to a record price of $8 a bushel. Around Meyer, farmers were devastated. “That’s all been lost, and it’s not going to be replanted this season,” said Gerald Jenkins, general manager of Ursa Farmers Cooperative, not far from Meyer. One of the cooperative’s grain elevators, in Meyer, was swamped, Mr. Jenkins said, another at risk.  Worse, Mr. Jenkins said he feared that so many fields under water would mean not much grain for the cooperative to sell come the fall harvest. “It’s a very sickening feeling,” he said......

The result is higher grain prices, which is good news for many farmers in Tennessee. It could be a banner year, but some farmers said it would be better if it were not for rising diesel and fertilizer costs. The Iowa Farm Bureau said up to 3 million acres of corn and soybeans are under water in Iowa. And that's forcing prices to go up. Corn is now selling for nearly $7 a bushel, which is nearly double last year's average price. A levee broke in Gulfport, Illinois, sending muddy waters from the most important U.S. waterway cascading into nearby farmland and a few homes. No one was injured but authorities closed the bridge across the river to Burlington, Iowa. Corn and soybean prices stayed near record levels as millions of acres of cropland have been lost or damaged in the world's largest grain exporter. In overnight electronic trading, CBOT July soybeans soared 19 3/4 cents to $15.79 3/4. November soybeans jumped 24 3/4 cents to $15.55 3/4. Excessive wetness, particularly in the top soybean-producing state of Iowa, continues to support CBOT soybeans and corn amid worries the water will lower yields and force producers to abandon acres. "It's all about weather," said Joe Victor, vice president of marketing for Allendale. The Midwest region could get a break from moisture in the near-term as "a deepening eastern USA trough may be strong enough to hold the heavier rains either south or west," DTN Meteorlogix said. However, eventually when the trough weakens and the warm air tries to move back into the Midwest, it will begin to rain again, the private weather firm said. Crude palm oil futures on Malaysia's derivatives exchange ended higher Monday with support from the adverse weather in the U.S., trade participants said. x 0   x 0  Alert Admin	June 12 (Bloomberg) -- Palm oil futures in Malaysia rose the fifth time in six days, boosted by the outlook for increased demand as its main substitute, soybean oil, traded at its highest in three months. Palm oil's discount to soybean oil widened to its biggest in more than 18 months yesterday, according to Bloomberg data. The difference may prompt China and India, the world's biggest buyers of vegetable oils, to buy more palm oil, produced mostly by Indonesia and Malaysia. ``Consumption of palm oil is the highest in the world as compared to other edible oils, and is growing at the fastest rate,'' Selena Leong, an analyst at DMG & Partners Securities in Singapore, said in a report today. ``Demand for palm oil worldwide is increasing.'' Palm oil for August delivery gained as much as 85 ringgit, or 2.36 percent, to 3,691 ringgit ($1,127) a metric ton on the Malaysia Derivatives Exchange, before closing 0.5 percent higher at 3,623 ringgit. ``Palm oil is emerging as a viable alternative for other edible oils as it is naturally semi-solid and does not require hydrogenation,'' Leong said. Hydrogenation is a chemical process which adds hydrogen to vegetable oils, producing solid or semi- solid fats and increasing the shelf-life of food ingredients.
