I'm happy i'm holding this counter. No regret though dropped slightly. In times like this, it is still in very good level. High oil has no much effect on Singtel? Maybe. In future, due to high prices, teleworking, teleconferencing etc will benefit telecommunication companies. Sending electrical signals do not need much power. However, economic slowdown will affect them indirectly, if recession is severe. Lets hope the economy to churn again.

SingTel Extends MVSAT Network Globally Via SES NEW SKIES Satellites Posted on: Wednesday, 18 June 2008, 03:00 CDT SES NEW SKIES, an SES company (Paris:SESG) (LuxX:SESG), announces that Singapore Telecommunications Limited (SingTel), Asia's leading telecommunications group, is extending its suite of maritime satellite solutions globally by contracting capacity on SES NEW SKIES' NSS-7, NSS-703 and NSS-5 satellites. Terms of the three-year deal for up to 5MHz of capacity over the three satellites remain confidential. Mr. Titus Yong, SingTel's Vice President of Satellite, said: "SingTel, one of Asia's leading satellite service providers, has been providing VSAT services with regional coverage for over two years. We are pleased to work with a top-tier global satellite service provider such as SES NEW SKIES to extend our reach to provide seamless and secure worldwide coverage over all major shipping routes." The SES NEW SKIES satellites will also support demand for SingTel's OfficeAtSea@SingTel suite of Maritime VSAT solutions, which enable vessels to communicate seamlessly and cost-effectively with their headquarters on land. Solutions include 'always-on' unlimited broadband internet access, email, low-cost Voice over IP (VoIP) calls, GSM onboard and ship surveillance. These overcome the limitations of traditional maritime communications by allowing the ship to become a seamless extension of the shore-based office. http://www.redorbit.com/news/business/1438235/singtel_extends_mvsat_network_globally_via_ses_new_skies_satellites/ |

SingTel in Talks to Buy a Stake in Chinese Operators (Update2) By Andrea Tan and John Liu June 17 (Bloomberg) -- Singapore Telecommunications Ltd., Southeast Asia's largest phone company, said it's in discussions with Chinese telephone operators as it seeks to enter the world's biggest telephone market by users. The Singaporean carrier is in talks with Chinese phone companies about a potential investment, Chief Executive Officer Chua Sock Koong said today on the sidelines of an industry conference in Singapore. ``We would only be interested if we can be strategic investors to the local operator,'' Chua said. China is ``certainly a market that we've been monitoring.'' SingTel's talks follow agreements by Vodafone Group Plc, Telefonica SA and SK Telecom Co. to buy stakes in Chinese operators in a bid to enter a market that bans foreign companies from offering services. China, the world's fastest-growing major economy, is home to more handset users than the combined populations of the U.S., U.K. and Japan. ``The best option right now for foreign operators that want to get a piece of the Chinese market is to buy a stake in a local carrier,'' said Steven Liu, a telecommunications analyst at DBS Vickers Ltd. in Hong Kong. ``The Chinese market might open up more to foreign investment in the future, but it's unlikely in the short term.'' China Telecom Talks China Telecom Corp., the nation's biggest fixed-line company, said last week it was in talks to sell a stake to a strategic investor. SingTel, SK Telecom and Qualcomm Inc. have approached the carrier, the Oriental Morning Post reported on its Web site June 4, citing unidentified people familiar with the situation. The Chinese phone company and its parent are set to take over the smaller mobile-phone unit of rival China Unicom Ltd. as part of a government-led plan to merge the nation's six state- owned operators into three businesses that offer fixed-line and wireless services. ................................ |

SingTel looks defensive amid current economic slowdown, says CLSA; reiterates Outperform rating with unchanged $4.25 target price. Broker says recent issues overshadowing stock, creating uncertainty have now dissipated; "perceived risks of a potential MTN investment or Temasek's Indonesian divestment woes is now behind us." Adds company's diverse portfolio across both mature and high growth markets attractive, is driving earnings growth. Says market may have failed to appreciate recent strength in domestic market; notes Singapore mobile net adds have grown faster than rivals without compromising on revenue. But adds, currency movements are key near-term risk as further strengthening of SGD hits translation of overseas profits.

Hi ! I think stocks like singtel are good to keep for the long term. I still have 1 lot in my cpf (since the inception many years ago) and always get pleasantly surprised by their good and consistent dividend payouts. For me, this stock should be played by computing your returns instead of punting like SGX. Just me 2 cts worth... |

Telco, semiconductor counters make good inflation hedges By LS CNA /ls | Posted: 12 June 2008 1941 hrs SINGAPORE : Semiconductor and telecom stocks are good additions to an investor's portfolio at a time of rising inflation, according to investment advisory firm Macquarie. Macquarie said these sectors are better insulated because they do not depend on materials that are bearing the brunt of rising prices, such as oil and food. Telcos also depend very little on fuel relative to their revenue base, unlike sectors like transport. Apart from telcos, Macquarie said companies that can better manage rising costs are those that produce commodities and firms that serve niche markets. One example is Keppel Corporation. Beside its pricing power, the world's largest rig builder also has a net order book of over S$12.5 billion. The firm is expected to stay strong for another year amid higher oil prices. |
