Quotes: Singapore shares may open lower on Thursday after another selloff on Wall Street as oil prices moved further into record territory, fanning concerns about inflation and consumer spending. The Dow Jones Industrial average fell almost 230 points on Wednesday, following a nearly 200-point slide on Tuesday, as oil prices shot past $134 a barrel for the first time on the futures market. "Now there is an extra cloud that surrounds the economic outlook -- how much slowing will result from the high oil prices that are pinching consumers' pockets around the world," said David Cohen, chief economist at Action Economics. "There is some undeniable nervousness out there. The stock markets are going to remain volatile in that environment because everybody is still more unsure than usual and with that extra cloud right now," said Cohen. The minutes of the Federal Reserve's last meeting indicating that inflationary risks will likely keep the U.S. central bank from cutting rates again added to the gloom on Wall Street. The Fed has done a series of rate cuts to calm financial markets and prevent the U.S. economy from slipping into a recession. On Wednesday, Singapore's Straits Times Index closed down 2.98 points or 0.1 percent at 3,196.90, extending losses for a second straight session. But gainers edged out decliners 319 to 299, with 970 stocks unchanged. There were 2.2 billion shares traded, valued at S$1.9 billion. |

Quotes: Singapore shares may open lower on Wednesday as Wall Street's fall overnight may prompt investors to continue pocketing gains. Oil prices surged to another record above $129 a barrel on Tuesday, sending the Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbling nearly 200 points. Investors are worried that the continued spike in oil prices may lead to spiraling inflation and further crimp consumer spending in the United States, which is a major market for Asian goods, analysts said. "I think oil prices are somewhat in a bubble," said Khiem Do, head for multi-asset strategy at Baring Asset Management. "It is difficult to forecast oil price because there is also a political angle in the trend but we think that oil is a bit overbought at the moment." Still, there has been a slight improvement in investor sentiment on belief that the United States will avoid a deep recession and that should support Asian equity markets, he said. "There will always be surprises in the U.S. but I don't think there is a big concern in the second quarter," said Khiem who expects U.S. consumption to get a boost from the more than $100 billion in tax rebates to be handed out until July 1. On Tuesday, the benchmark Straits Times Index closed down 41.61 points or 1.3 percent at 3,199.88. Decliners beat gainers 385 to 268, with 935 stocks unchanged. There were 1.9 billion shares traded, valued at S$2.1 billion. |

Quotes: Singapore shares are expected to open higher on Tuesday after the Dow's advance overnight, but gains may be capped by concerns over the continued surge in oil prices. A fresh U.S. economic indicator suggesting that the world's biggest economy may be poised for a recovery helped the Dow Jones Industrial average rise 41.36 points or 0.32 percent to 13,028.16. The Conference Board's leading economic indicators report showed a 0.1 percent rise for April, following a similar uptick in March. The index aims to predict economic activity in the next three to six months. Light, sweet crude for June delivery jumped 76 cents to settle at a record $127.05 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. "We have yet to see the full economic fallout from the U.S. credit crunch and housing slump ... further profit downgrades are likely and the May to October period is often difficult for shares," said Shane Oliver, head of investment strategy at AMP Capital Investors, in a note. The Singapore market was closed on Monday for a public holiday. On Friday, the Straits Times index finished up 34.06 points or 1.1 percent at 3,241.49. Gainers led decliners 393 to 238 with 942 stocks unchanged. There were 1.6 billion shares traded valued at S$1.9 billion. |

Quotes: Singapore shares may open higher on Friday, tracking Wall Street's gains overnight Singapore shares may open higher on Friday, tracking Wall Street's gains overnight as investors focus on positive news such as the drop in U.S. jobless claims and word that Ford had a $100 million profit in the first quarter. The Dow rose 85.73 points to close at 12,848.95 on Thursday. Some caution may remain and investors are likely to take quick profit, which could limit the market's trading range. "The market looks to be rebounding [in recentl sessions], but the outlook is very uncertain," said Ang Soo Kee, analyst at Daiwa Institute of Research. "The risk is still there" and sentiment still seems unsettled, he said. On Thursday, the Straits Times Index closed down 16.29 points or 0.5 percent at 3,177.55. Quotes: Singapore shares are expected to open higher on Thursday Singapore shares are expected to open higher on Thursday following overnight gains on Wall Street, where investors cheered better-than-expected earnings from Boeing Co. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 42.99 points or 0.34 percent to 12,763.22 after the aircraft manufacturer reported a 38 percent jump in first-quarter earnings. Boeing is one of the 30 stocks that comprise the Dow Jones industrial average. On Wednesday, the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) rose 6.61 points or 0.2 percent to close at 3,193.84. Gainers outnumbered decliners 380 to 257 with 934 stocks unchanged. There were 1.88 billion shares traded valued at S$1.99 billion. Westcomb Securities research head Goh Mou Lih said the STI may continue to hover at 3,200 levels and hold on to gains, at least for this week, in the absence of major economic data releases. "Investors are still concerned about the effect of the U.S. economic slowdown," said Goh. "Next week will be more exciting, maybe we'll see some profit-taking." The U.S. is expected to release its first quarter gross domestic product (GDP) data next week and the Federal Reserve will make its interest rate decision on April 29-30, with the market expecting at least another 25 basis point cut. |

Dear Cyjjerry85, Do you oftenly short some counters? It seems you are hoping the market sliding down at the closing.... ha...ha...ha... Noticeably, you are posting about the same messages under different topics. Lately, I find myself very hard getting some rewards while shorting, just be cautious, it seems market is no longer good for "Shorting" action. BB always act against us!!! (just personal view)
