Singapore's Venture profit falls on investment losses By Jennifer Tan SINGAPORE, Feb 15 (Reuters) - Contract electronics firm Venture (VENM.SI: Quote, Profile, Research) posted a 5 percent slide in quarterly earnings on Friday, hit by losses from its investment portfolio, and warned that business may be tough in the year ahead. But Venture, Singapore's second-largest contract electronics maker after Nasdaq-listed Flextronics International Ltd (FLEX.O: Quote, Profile, Research), said that in spite of the fickle economic and financial environment, the motivation to outsource manufacturing remained strong for many U.S. and European companies. "The environment will probably remain challenging for at least the first half of this year," Venture Chief Executive Wong Ngit Liong told a media and analyst briefing. "We can help these companies achieve cost reductions." The company's stock has been hammered by investor fears that a U.S. recession will crimp consumer demand, but most analysts are optimistic that the its focus on higher margin products such as health-monitoring gadgets would provide a buffer from the worst of the economic slowdown. Venture said that its marked-to-market losses from collateralised debt obligations, or CDOs, amounted to S$16.2 million in 2007. The company earned S$74.3 million ($52.6 million) for the three months ended December, compared with S$78.3 million in the same period a year ago. The results were slightly above a mean net profit estimate of S$73.4 million from three analysts polled by Reuters. For 2007, Venture reported net profit of S$300 million, up 25 percent from 2006 and in line with a mean net profit estimate of S$299 million from 14 analysts polled by Reuters Estimates. Venture makes printers for Hewlett-Packard Co Ltd (HPQ.N: Quote, Profile, Research), the world's largest computer and printer maker, which accounts for about a quarter of the Singapore's company's sales. It also produces hard drives for computer storage firm Iomega Corp (IOM.N: Quote, Profile, Research) and networking devices for electronics and testing equipment maker Agilent Technologies Inc (A.N: Quote, Profile, Research). Other products include radio-frequency communication products, handheld devices, health-monitoring equipment and vehicle safety sensors. Last month, Flextronics posted a quarterly profit that beat expectations and stuck to its earnings forecasts, buoyed by robust demand for products such as LCD TVs, digital cameras and MP3 players. Venture shares fell 22 percent in the October-December quarter, compared with a 7.9 percent gain in rival Flextronics stock and a 18 percent fall in Taiwan's Hon Hai Precision Industry Co Ltd (2317.TW: Quote, Profile, Research). The company is still making profit... so downside is $6.87 upside is $13.60.. If the price drop further, it is wise for some to offer a merger at $6.87. Let's see how Venture perform... |

Earnings fell short of consensus estimate for 4th quarter-$78million. There was no mention of any provisions made from their exposure to CDOs. Walan, this counter may hit new lows. |

Generally, it is niche and profitable business... it is good to collect if it is tanked... The company is well managed with the fact that its net profit drop due to CDO.. Good for long term investment .... or price is good enough for someone to take over.. |

AN EXCEPTIONAL YEAR WITH RECORD REVENUE OF S$3.9b AND RECORD EARNINGS OF S$302.7m SINGAPORE, 15 FEBRUARY 2008 ? Venture Corporation Limited (?Venture?, ?Company? or the ?Group?) achieved record revenue of S$3,872.8 million for year 2007. This represents approximately 24.0% year-on-year revenue growth. For the first time, annual earnings crossed S$300 million with a record Profit After Tax of S$302.7 million, a year-on-year improvement in excess of 25.0%. This translates to an earnings per share (?EPS?) of 109.6 cents on a fully diluted basis, compared to 88.1 cents for the previous corresponding year. Revenue for the fourth quarter of 2007 increased by 14.5% to S$963.4 million, up from S$841.2 million in the same quarter last year. The Group registered earnings of S$75.2 million for the fourth quarter of 2007, tracking past three quarters of above S$70.0 million profitability. Commenting on the results, Mr Wong Ngit Liong, Chairman and CEO of Venture, said, ?I am very pleased to report a year of record revenue and profitability. Apart from these good financial results, the Group has made significant progress in building our long term capabilities.? During the year, the Group added a number of key partners and witnessed considerable strengthening of relationships with major OEM partners. Venture also moved selectively into several new product areas, further diversifying its portfolio of products, value-add activities and technologies. Operationally, the Group has maintained its standing as a partner of choice through its superior performance and ability to meet both quality and cost objectives of its partners, providing both best in class performance-to-price ratio as well as capabilities-to-cost ratio. All these, coupled with excellent execution on corporate initiatives and business plans have fuelled revenue and earnings growth. PERFORMANCE REVIEW The Group?s annual revenue rose by 24.0% with contributions from all five segments, namely:- Printing & Imaging 28.0% Retail Store Solutions & Industrial Products 21.0% PC Peripherals & Data Storage 18.0% Networking & Communications 18.0% Test and Measurement / Medical / Others 15.0% Notwithstanding the steep decline in USD compared to SGD by more than 8.0% in 2007 and a one-time rationalisation of channel inventory by a major customer in the third quarter, the Group grew its revenue through expansion of customer base and market share. Venture?s strategic business model and positioning built on diversity of product category, customer base, product portfolio and technology domain, has enabled the Group to achieve a double digit growth in earnings. This translates to a net margin of 7.8% on a full year basis. The Group generated strong cash from operations with a resultant EBITDA of S$354.2 million for 2007, 31.5% higher than 2006. The Group?s ROE (?Return on Equity?) improved to 16.5%. BALANCE SHEET The Group ended the year with total shareholders? equity of S$1,884.5 million, an increase of 7.1% over the previous year. In August 2007, the Group arranged a syndicated loan facility to refinance a bridging loan and for general corporate purposes. Total loans amounted to S$510.3 million as at year end. The Group has a debt-equity ratio of 0.27x as at end of 2007. The Group maintains a healthy Balance Sheet with Cash and Investments of S$746.0 million. Cash and bank balances totalled S$493.3 million at year end. The Group?s net asset value per share rose to S$6.87 for the year ended 2007. DIVIDEND For the financial ended 31 December 2007, the Board of Directors has recommended a final dividend of 50 cents per share on a one-tier tax-exempt basis. Together with the one-time special dividend of eight cents per share less 18.0% income tax paid out in September 2007, total distribution for 2007 will amount to 58 cents per share (less applicable tax on the one-time special dividend), with a dividend cover of 1.89 times. OUTLOOK The Group has made continued progress towards its vision to be a leading Electronic Services Provider (?ESP?) driven by innovation, technology and excellence. Venture continued to deliver value-add in research and development, intellectual properties and product and process capabilities to its strategic partners, maintaining a strong technology edge over the competition. Over the years, the Group has built strengths in diverse areas. This diversity provides business stability and creates growth opportunities. Outsourcing remains a strong value proposition for the OEMs. In a challenging economic climate, it is anticipated that more OEMs will seek innovative business arrangements including outsourcing to strengthen their competitiveness and maintain their leadership positions. With its broad-based strength and operational excellence, Venture is well-placed to seize these outsourcing opportunities. However, the environment remains challenging in view of the current volatile financial and uncertain economic outlook. |

Different persons lah... this Mdm travels only on Business Class or Better given her status as wife of CEO. The other Ms Tan travelled in Economy class, that why she thought she was treated 'unfairly'. By the same argument, it should be a different air stewardess as only senior stewardess serves in Business class.. supposedly friendlier. So end up chatting with Mdm's hubby, and got slapped. Unbelievable, so unbecoming of someone with 'status'. |
