I would like to applaud the

Government’s move to encourage

the use of public transport by building

more train lines and increasing

the number of bus services.

It is my belief that having a

more user-friendly public transport

system will go a long way towards

encouraging Singaporeans to make

the switch from private transport.

I have lived in Singapore for more

than four years, and I think that

more can be done to make public

transport even more attractive:

• Extend train services on Friday

and Saturday nights until 2am.

While there are Night Bus routes,

some heartland areas are not

served by the Night Buses.

• If train services are extended,

then perhaps feeder bus services

can be extended too.

• Increase the frequency or

capacity of express buses during

peak hours.

• Some buses arrive too frequently

and some not frequently enough.

I think that most buses should arrive

at five- to 10-minute intervals.

In success, bear in mind the support they got from family and colleagues; in failure, “try not to blame everybody else except yourself ”, he urged his audience.

Finally, they should not be afraid to be critical and question assumptions. But, “knowing when and how to criticise” is as important as knowing what to criticise, he said. “That is called EQ, and more and more people now believe that EQ and soft skills will get you further in life than IQ.”
