Last Night, one auntie told her friends that she had received a phone call from her banker earlier in the evening.
Her banker made an offer to her on the TEMASEK 40-YEAR BOND at 4.20% Coupon Rate.
She immediately told her banker, "I am nOt interested in this product. Thank You!"

TEMASEK 40-YEAR BOND
The 40-year bonds were sold in less than two hours with 88 per cent demand from Singapore and 12 per cent from Hong Kong.
In the end, 97 per cent of the bonds went to Singapore-based investors and only 3 per cent to Hong Kong. 'Allocation was different because we would like to place more of the bonds to long term investors,' said Mr Lee.
Insurance companies were allocated the lion's share of 89 per cent, followed by funds with 9 per cent and banks with 2 per cent. There were 53 accounts in all. |

Both Singamas & Goodpack may be in the same container box space but the former manufactures standardised TEUs/FEUs for the contianer shipping industry as well as operates trucking & container depot biz while Goodpack leases its patented intermediate bulk containers for handling rubber, coffee & liquids such as edible oils, juices and milk.

Surging Wheat Price —
Risk Of Another Food Crisis?
While WTI crude oil quietly slipped out of its recent range and gold found its footing this week, the market focused on the continued surge in the prices of wheat and the possible implications on the cost of anything from biscuits, bread, poultry to beer.
The risk is that wheat prices could stay elevated for a while, pulling corn prices upwards as well.
High wheat prices will tempt US farmers to switch from soya beans and corn to winter wheat production, leaving the inventory situation uncertain given the already increased demand for corn in ethanol production combined with new demand as a feed substitute to wheat.
The corn-to-wheat ratio has moved from 0.75 down to 0.50, a wheat outperformance of 33 per cent. Once the situation stabilises, this trade should favour corn as wheat prices should suffer.
Until we find a more stable plateau in the market, FEAR will be the main driver with high volatility expected.

Gold — A Bubble Forming?
The month-long correction in gold seems to be over, as buyers re-emerged on the back of dollar weakness and a pickup in physical demand, with Ramadan and the Indian wedding season.
The important 200-day moving average support at 1,150 held and will be the focus point for any future corrections.
The top of a bubble is usually marked by a final surge that explodes higher.
Considering gold is “only” up 12 per cent year-to-date, such a move remains to be seen.
We are optimistic that outside factors will keep the safe haven theme alive into the second half.

Crude Oil — Surplus Leads To Lower Prices?
The energy sector had a quiet but positive week with crude oil rising above US$81, a three-month high.
The dollar index has been toying with the 200-day moving average all week with a move below, signalling further weakness. The weaker dollar will help dollar-based commodities.
Meanwhile, the process of bringing crude onshore from floating storage continues. With inventories at Cushing, Oklahoma (the delivery hub into Nymex-WTI) swelling to 37.8 million barrels, only 100,000 short of the previous record from May, the forward price of crude is now so close to the spot that the buy and hold on floating storage is no longer financially attractive.
The impact of this on the tanker market is clear to see from the number of Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCC) looking for tenders. The vessel availability is at a sixyear high and the daily rates for hiring a VLCC from the Arabian Gulf to Japan has collapsed to US$6,500 ($8,800).
As shipping companies barely break even at these prices, some VLCC owners have reacted by taking vessels out of service and anchoring them until the situation stabilises.
We conclude that the high for the year has already been made and the risk heading into the second half points towards lower prices.

RiSK ADVERSITY to continue in Q3
FEAR will be the main market driver with HIGH VOLATILITY expected
Andrew Robinson
The one-year recovery has primarily come about due to the most extraordinary policy response ever seen.
As governments are left heavily-indebted and weak, their response to a new crisis will be questionable.
China, the global growth engine, is fighting a two-way battle against inflation and a speculative bubble and will, therefore, need to stay tight on policy.
Considering that China consumes between a fifth and a seventh of all global commodity production, we see downside risk to the Reuters Jefferies CRB index on the assumption of a Chinese slowdown.
This will be driven primarily by renewed selling, mainly in base metals and the energy sector. Ongoing concerns about the Sovereign Debt issue as well as the risk of a double-dip recession will maintain risk adversity into the third quarter.

Roaring prime rents expected for Asia’s ‘tigers’
S’pore and Hong Kong rentals to skyrocket
SINGAPORE
Around 1.5 million square metres of office space was absorbed in the Asia-Pacific market in the second quarter of this year — almost five times the amount recorded during the same period last year.
A new research report released by property consultant DTZ has found that occupied space in the Asia-Pacific region increased significantly in the quarter, as companies resumed expansion plans and upgraded to better quality space on the back of strong economic growth.
DTZ forecasts that prime rents in the region will grow by an average of 6.2 per cent annually between this year and 2014, with two of Asia’s “tigers” — Hong Kong and Singapore — expected to outperform this forecast.
Chesterton Suntec International’s research and consultancy director Colin Tan agreed that 6.2 per cent is a reasonable forecast for Singapore but felt that this figure might be a bit conservative for Hong Kong.
“Hong Kong faces limited office supply, so the upside for its rent prices to go up is higher as compared to Singapore, which still has sufficient fixed supply for office space,” Mr Tan added. Property experts believe that prime rents for Singapore’s office property will rise closer to 2014, when most of the supply is taken up. — Singapore and Hong Kong are expected to outperform in the office space area as prime rents are expected to go up by an average of 6.2 per cent annually between this year and 2014.

Stanchart’s ‘Preferred Banking’ gunning for affluent Singaporeans
Travis Teo
travisteo@mediacorp.com.sg
SINGAPORE
Citing growth potential in their expanding wealth, the bank said its new service will offer investment advice and mobile banking to this group of people, consisting of young and mobile executives, professionals, couples and families.
There are about 725,000 in this “emerging affluent” market here, making up about 19 per cent of the population.
This segment has been growing annually at about 10 per cent every year from 2005 to last year, despite the challenging economic conditions last year, the bank said.
Standard Chartered also plans to hire at least 150 more relationship managers over the next two years to help drive its latest initiative. The bank added that it plans to introduce “Preferred Banking” to about eight different markets soon.
Analysts agreed that banks like Standard Chartered are chasing the right group.
“We are looking at our neighbours, Indonesia, Malaysia and further up north in fact towards obviously China as well and India, where these countries hold great potential for growing middle income group,” said Sias Research lead analyst Moh Tze Yang. — Standard Chartered has launched its “Preferred Banking” service to target the emerging affluent market of Singaporeans earning between $6,000 and $16,000 a month.

BREATH TEST can identify different types of CANCER, say scientists
LONDON
Their preliminary results, printed in the
The sensor used gold nanoparticles to detect levels of so-called volatile organic compounds, measured in a few parts per billion, that became more elevated in cancer patients.
The device could provide an early warning system that flags the disease before tumours become visible in X-rays.
The study examined the breath of 177 volunteers, including healthy people and patients already diagnosed with different stages of the four types of cancer.
However, further tests with larger samples will be needed to determine the strength of the link between breath and cancer detection.
“These results are interesting and show that there is the potential to develop a single breath test to detect these cancers,” said Dr Lesley Walker of the CancerActive charity in the United Kingdom.
“Strengthening the methods for early diagnosis of cancer, as well as improved treatments will have a significant impact on cutting death rates,” she added. — Scientists working on a breath test to detect cancer said in research published yesterday that they are now able to identify different types of the disease.British Journal of Cancer monthly, showed that the sensors could distinguish whether a patient had lung, breast, bowel or prostate cancer, irrespective of age, gender or lifestyle.

Bangladesh farmers turn to 'frog weddings'
Farmers in a parched district of northern Bangladesh are marrying off frogs in a desperate bid to bring on monsoon rains and protect their crops, local officials said Wednesday.
Bangladesh farmers turn to 'frog weddings'
Bangladesh suffered its driest July in decades, prompting farmers to turn to the centuries-old rain-making ritual of celebrating frog marriages, officials say.
"There have been lot of frog marriages as there has been hardly any rainfall here even though it's monsoon season," Sadullahpur district government administrator Ariful Haq said.
At a frog wedding in Ramchandrapur village, 300 villagers dressed in their best clothes attended the festivities, said Tajul Islam, who was at the wedding.
"The frog bride and groom are highly decorated with a red streak of colour on their forehead and carried in a special basket to a banana-leaf stage," he said.
