Gambler busts 5 credit cards to pay S$200k debt

29 March 2011, SingaporeScene

Just what have casinos done to Singaporeans?

In yet another case of a gambler out of control, a 29-year-old engineer not only busted five credit cards to pay off his gambling debts, but he also borrowed from nine credit companies to fulfill his payments, reported AsiaOne.

And that wasn’t all — his aunts had to chip in to help him pay off debts that amounted up to S$100,000, according to Shin Min Daily. He also lost a girlfriend of 10 years as a result of his gambling addiction.

Still, the man did not learn his lesson. His father, Foo, soon found his son back at his costly routine again. When his aunts refused to help a second time, the man threatened to commit suicide.

The distressed father is now forking out money to clear his son’s debts in hopes of the son applying for a self-exclusion order from the casino authorities. Foo is also questioning why the banks did not cancel his son’s credit card after they realised he was unable to fulfill his payments.

His son still owes credit card companies S$20,000

Is there a right place to light-up?

Smoke-free HDB blocks

Letter from Joseph Eng

I would like to add on the letter from Lim Teck Koon, “A smoke-free plea” (April 13).

I urge the HDB to set aside smoke-free blocks.

As a HDB dweller, my family of non-smokers has to constantly put up with second-hand smoke from my neighbours. I am especially concerned for the health of my child who has suffered from this situation which is beyond our control — we cannot control the wind direction.

I am not against smokers lighting up in their homes as long as their puffs of smoke do not enter my premises. As it would be far-fetched to asked for a blanket ban on smoking at home, I urge the authorities to take alternative action on handling second-hand smoke.

Will there be ‘smokers’ paths’?

Letter from Jason Tan

Mr LIM Teck Koon is suggesting we prohibit smoking at traffic and pedestrian crossings, and he also mentions smokers lighting up along footpaths shared with non-smokers.

Right now, areas such as bus stops, taxi stands and within 5m of a building entrance are already off-limits to smokers.

If smoking is also banned on all footpaths, then where do smokers have to walk if they are heading to the MRT station or bus stop?

It seems that Mr Lim is a health-conscious person, which is a good thing.

May I ask if he wears a mask when he leaves home since, while waiting at the traffic junction, there are other harmful pollutants like carbon monoxide emitted by vehicles?

Most of  married young singaporeans are  residing in areas like,  ponggol, sengkang, woodland etc.(but their parents are staying put in queenstown, bishan where flat prices are very expensive.)

Where are the future kids get to stay next time? JB and other parts of  malaysia?  or some Industrial areas of the far end of singapore , or those unexplored islands?  becos, simply, they cant afford sengkang, ponggol and woodland when the price are skyrocketting.

Uncle Bon must meditate first to get the  qi to flow thru the whole body before his conclusion.

US debt issue sufacing again, they owe their own  US$ and if they cant do anything,  no one can help them for which, they might   trigger their own serious inflation.

Some  singaporeans still   cant afford buy a  HDB flat....they are on rental  all the while...

If they got some form of help earlier say 20 years  earlier,  they cld have owned a flat at much much cheaper rate and has a roof call their own.

Never forget that for some, it is Home becoming HOMELESS, serious. Housing is no longer what it was 15 years back or 3 to 4 elections away. Beyond the reach of the lower income and jobless and those who shifted from one place to another. Sometimes the average may also not be able to own their own homes because they become ineligible for bank loans and the state also ignore their plights.

LKY said during his interview,  he thinks US will still be the leader in the market in the next 10 years, though he had said in the past interview that China will rule. I guess he has come to realise that  China is sitll not up to the  expectation to be called  " 老 大 “ ?

Talking about US debt, he warned that US people is owning their own US$ in their own country and this resulted in too much US$ floating in the market which could bring forth serious Inflation in US in years to come..

Are we seeing a repeat of bringing in 'foreign talents'  and pay them huge salaries  and then saw these 'talents' bring down NOL, SGX, Chartered Semiconductor, etc into Red ink before being rescued by local 'second class talents'.  DBS is also a victim of foreign talent and is still paying the price of taking over Dao Heng Bank at way above market price - just as SGX bending over backwards to take over ASX - as well as structured ( structured against its clients)  products started by another foreign 'talent'.

Now SGX has wasted a projected $20 million on a 'merger' nobody wants - $7.5 milliion this quater alone.  Lessons not learnt
