Any insurance company without capital protection for the sum insured is hard to sell nowadays.

Dow looks aimless tonight.

AIG is trying to sell AIA but looks like there is not much interest.

Hi all,

I hope this is not true.  But from what i calculated and what the report states, it seems that hitting 1300 is possible.

Changing of value evaluation stock picking strategy has change from PE based to more and more PTB based. The investors look for least its share price downward trend risk with future huge potential capital gain.

Do you think US market lead global market forever? The correct answer is NO, I do not think so.

There's a quite a few PRC companies hoarding tonnes of cash in the bank, while it's stock price is languishing. Why aren't corp. raiders like OHL offer a buy-out, and profit from the exercise?

So it seems PE is no longer essential factor as a guide for stock picking but PTB I suppose.

AIG, Citi, and the like are bankrupt...they are living on govt handout buying time...they got no money to pay their trillion dollar losses..

A loss is a loss..you cannot escape till you pay up..they got no money to function as a bank anymore...not credit crunch matter,...

Come April ...we better run for the hill...tsunami coming...one big fish will trigger the economic nuclear reaction..that send the world back to 1929..all over again...

Stocks poised to plunge

Stocks set to slump at the opening bell over stimulus plan concerns.

By CNNMoney.com staff

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Stocks are poised to open significantly lower on Tuesday, as investors worry that the new stimulus plan - expected to be signed into law later in the day - won't help breathe new life into the economy.

At 5:25 a.m. ET, the Dow Jones industrial average, S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures were lower with a comparison to fair value, suggesting a dismal start on Wall Street.

Futures act as a general guide of how markets will likely open, measuring current index values against the perceived future performance.

U.S. markets were closed Monday in observance of President's Day.

Global markets on Tuesday were lower, with declines in the Asian and European indexes.

All eyes will be on President Obama, who is expected to sign the $787 billion stimulus bill into law sometime Tuesday, marking the final step for approval in what has been a contentious process and the first major challenge for the new president.

Enthusiasm over the stimulus plan and bank bailout have been tempered by an ongoing barrage of bad corporate and economic news. Last week, the Dow shed 5.2%, the S&P 500 fell 4.8% and the Nasdaq stumbled 3.6%.

Looking forward, the president on Wednesday is expected to unveil his long-awaited foreclosure prevention plan.

Companies: Wal-Mart Stores (WMT, Fortune 500) will report fourth-quarter earnings before the bell. Analysts expect the company to report a 2% gain in revenues to $109 billion, and a 5% decline in earnings to 99 cents per share, according to a consensus of analysts polled by Thomson Reuters.

Tuesday is also deadline day for General Motors (GM, Fortune 500) and Chrysler. The automakers, who have already received approval for $17.4 billion in loans from the government, will submit their latest financial survival plans to the Treasury Department.

Oil and money: Oil prices fell 56 cents a barrel in early trading to $36.45. The U.S. dollar rose against major currencies, including the euro, the yen and the British pound. To top of page

Singapore's ST Engineering FY net pft falls 6 pct

SINGAPORE, Feb 17 (Reuters) - Singapore Technologies Engineering (STEG.SI), the world's largest aircraft repair firm, posted a six percent decline in full year net profit, hurt by lower contributions from its aerospace arm.

The company, which is 49 percent owned by state investment firm Temasek Holdings [TEM.UL] and also Singapore's main weapons maker, said full year net profit slipped to S$473.6 million, compared to S$503.5 million a year ago.

Its order book stood at S$10.6 billion at the end of December, up from S$9.54 billion at the end of September.

ST Engineering did not disclose separate earnings for the fourth quarter, which would have been S$102.2 million based on the difference between the firm's nine-month and full-year earnings. (Reporting Harry Suhartono, editing by Kevin Lim)

I totally agree too. That is the logic I use, why I invest equity in the long run but not trade it in the short term holding.

I totally agree with you. Share PRICE plays the most important role in equity investment strategy. That is the logic I use, why I keep queue buying KXD at Sgd. 0.005 (the least prices ever since) for substantial lots. Ha... ha... ha...

Consider two different investors A and B:- Investor A has a larger invested capital of $100k compared to investor B having an invested capital of $50k. Assuming investor A and B bought the same stocks in their portfolio. Investor A's average price for every stock is twice that of investor B because A bought the stocks at a higher price than B. Overall, though investor A has a larger invested capital, but both investors each have the same number of shares in the same stocks they bought.

Investor A's portfolio:- Company A (ave price $2) (20000 shares), Company B (ave price $6) (10000 shares) (Total invested capital = $100K) (Total number of shares= 30000)

Investor B's portfolio:- Company A (ave price $1) (20000 shares), Company B (ave price $3) (10000 shares) (Total invested capital = $50k) (Total number of shares = 30000)

Consider also that if the current stock price is $1 for company A and $3 for company B, obviously investor B will be able to have immediate returns on his portfolio once the stock price goes up.

Obvious conclusion that cannot be underestimated:- Returns is dependent on the price one pays for one's investment and the potential of growth in one's investments.

Human emotions always work against sound rational investing principles. What one may know one may not do.......
