heya 178. no prob. i'm not sure how official the MFFAIS data is, either, which was why i had earlier asked when was their data published.

to get to the truth of the matter, one needs to get ML's substantial shareholder's list, or filings with the DJIA/whoever is in charge of the US exchanges. i've checked ML's website, they don't provide the info.

edit: ooh, you're right, they changed the info. wonder who's playing games. LOL.

anyway, when all's said and done, it doesn't affect us either way. get angry also no point. so might as well don't bother. :D

possible, 178investors. it still doesn't explain the filing tho. the figures don't tally in either case.

altho, shorting on US financial stocks has been banned for 30 days, so even if they pass the rumor, it doens't do them any good except allows them to accumulate ML at cheaper prices.

which again is counterintuitive, since after the 30 day ban is over, you can be sure they'd be back at work again.

it's just odd lah. either way doesn't tally.

anyway, it's the weekend! heck with the market!

lol! eh, no lah baseer. the website also stated that their calculation of profit/loss is based upon the px between the date filed and the current px. it may not be the buy px of the institution.

buy px of temasek was US$48.

anyhow, weekend's here! no point tearing hair out; what's done is done, and not like we have any power to do anything anw. just airing kaobehs. hehe. may as well go play for the weekend and be happy.

well, if the mffais website can be trusted, temasek did sell some of both merril and mylan then. but i think the ML sale was long ago, and not as much as said. the nos don't tally for it.

baseer, filing with SEC on jan 3rd '08 was that Temasek bought 91,666,666 shares of ML. Stakes unchanged since Mar 08, "still owns 86.9 million" means sold 4.7 mil before Mar.

gah. whatever. not like we have a choice anyway. happy weekend, peeps. :)

wait, i'm getting confused, so did Temasek sell or not?

because the link which CWQuah posted was the shareholders' list of ML, it's equivalent to SGX announcement of shareholder's substantial listing, ie, the BUSD data of the BBs.

unless someone faked that list. o_0

floppy, it really depends on what counter you're in. Some counters, even when dipped to 50%, is a buy. others is not. The thing i don't get about the ML investment (assuming the list is true) is this: if you wanted to cut, cut it at 5, 10 or even 15% loss. Not 47%. If the loss is 47%, considering ML is a blue chip, it should be a buy call, not a sell, esp since it ain't like Temasek is short of cash and holding power. ie, buy on dip strategy to DCA it.

it's a classic psychological mistake though: people buy, then when it goes down, they delude themselves into thinking "it's for the long term" and convince people so.

When in reality it's just a bad investment and should have been cut.

just be prepared to work til 65 or 70 lor. Already for ppl of my age group, minimum 120k locked in til you die. just count how much money that is. their mistakes, we pay.

teeth53, a lot of other forumers including myself had been saying since way before already that it was a bad investment. what i don't get is why if, we, little people, can see it, the top honchos couldn't, and waited til major loss before cutting. when instead, they should have bought more to shore up at this stage.

ooh. supremeA, be careful with what you say too yea. there are eyes everywhere.

tanglinboy, it isn't a rumor. if we scroll through the sale list which CWQuah posted: (when was the date of this list, CWQuah?)

-------------------

Temasek Holdings Private Ltd.

-0.23 % 2008-07-22 86,949,594 $2,939,765,773 $-32,171,350 -1.08 % Sold Some -86,949,594 -50.00 % $32,171,350

Berkshire Hathaway:

% 2008-07-17 2,000 % Added More 150 8.10 %

The categories in order are:

Fund Perf. 6 Report Date Current Shares Current Value Value Chng. Return Activity Shares Chng. Shares Chg.% Results

ie, Temasek's latest sale is for a net loss of 32mil. They've sold a total of 50% of their ML stake. Meanwhile, Berkshire has just added more to its stable.

edit: more info:

the major distribution was done by a foreign house, i think. likely MS or ML if that's the case. they have been very active in the blues lately. Sold at 4 and 4.03. (the 100+ lots).

means they likely know something we don't, as usual.

i also think SCM may have done some buybacks to support. that's why the dip is not as bad. o/w, most of the buying is by retailers.

redash: no dif between distribution and correction. it basically means selling. haha. For a BB: you distribute if you think the px is going to go down further. Alt, if you are trading the counter: distribution to short it, then later accumulation when px is right. Makes both ways (ie, churning/trading).

but SCM is at its lower band of the past 20 trading sessions: by right, 406 is a buy IF they are still trading. But they sold instead, below the band, and in large lots. so most likely something's up.

Aug 5th is results, right?

careful with this counter. i don't know why but large lots have been selling.

previous pattern for scalping for past 20 sessions was range of 406 to ~425. it shouldn't dip below 4.

ie, pattern has changed. distribution likely going on now; not just trading.

why are they selling when Berkshire Hathaway is buying!!

time to buy, they sell; time to sell, they buy. At least for us, we're small fries, we're not trained in finance, we're (most of us) not educated overseas in elite institutions. It's fine if we make mistakes since we don't have privileged information. but them!!!

CMI, ozone. TA shows that the probability is a high chance of getting sued to bankruptcy. I don't enter losing trades.

no offence to gahmen supporters yea. just a light moment while markets are in the doldrums.

'sister' is right.

and i hope your shorts are doing well.   you're experienced, so am sure you're doing fine.   am personally more concerned about the small timers and small fries out there. cos this market has been volatile since aug last year; and likely, if they didn't know proper money management (as most of us don't), even with the waves, realistic odds are that most are down by a lot, rather than up.

altho on the plus side, they can take comfort that even a big "house" like Temasek went down 47%.

nah, i don't necessarily think i'll be better than them: they're the trained ones, after all. if i were to try and apply, i don't think i'd even get called to the interview. degree not right and all that jazz.

seriously though: if you're managing in millions and billions, making money is easier than for small fries, who are playing with ten Ks, or 100ks. Since with a portfolio of say, 500 million, 1% return pa, and you have 5 mil already. Plus, with that kind of funds, frankly, just go longterm, put on margin at 2x. You can freaking return 10-20% pa just by dividend yield alone. Completely no need to take additional risks at all.

byebye, CPF.

regarding the Temasek investment: of course. Since when have they ever admitted their mistakes? It's always, "it's an error in judgment", "it's an honest mistake", "we'll be stronger" and "let's move on."

"Of four above statements, pick two to show your sincere regret to the public."

It believes these companies will survive the crisis and emerge stronger.

Some experts believe that Temasek has made an error of judgment.

How thoroughly typical. And as usual, they'll trot out their figures of 25% growth p.a. (i'm beginning to think most of it is our CPF and country reserve: ie, from the people.), etcetc.

Meanwhile they keep their cushy jobs, and the regular people, the small ones who can't afford even a 'peanut', have to work harder since it's our money they're losing.

supremeA, as per private msg. Smiley

careful of volume tho. cos when rallies occur on small volume, means you have to move twice as fast (considering 2 bil as ave vol). to give an analogy:

imagine if you're asked to catch 10 fishies from a pool of 500. and now the pool is reduced, 250 fishies. you still need to catch 10. which is easier.

sorry, i had abbreviated. cos a forumer had mentioned that he shorted on CFD. so what i meant was a short that has been kept open (on the CFD acct). as opposed to the usual one day shorting or 3 day SGX buyback type.

had hesitated to post here cos i think quite a lot in here are caught...

but technically: stock is on a longterm downtrend. market rebounce doesn't touch it. the cut signal was at 46c back last month(s).

would actually just say to cut it straight, because upside, if any, is limited to 38 then 46c. will have very strong resistance. may be better to preserve capital and don't look back: lots of other counters to make back on, if it's that 38c target you're looking at. cos realistically, the odds are that it'll hover or go down even at this pt, rather than up.

i think it's likely to go the way of gems tv.

above is my own opinion only tho. caveat applies.

"short open is good; so i guess i won't havta tell ya that a bounce is in order in the general market soon; and shortists are likely to get caught out due to the thinness of market and lots of ppl waiting on sidelines. "
