Cable TV Is Doomed

Mar 18 2010, 11:30 AM ET The death of cable television would probably still be inevitable without the Federal Communications Commission's national broadband plan, which aims to expand broadband Internet access to 90% of Americans and dramatically increase access speeds. But the measure, if it passes, will accelerate the demise of cable television as the standard method of consuming television. Now that Google is leading the way in developing Internet TV, the rise of this technology will come even faster.

Cable TV was always a bad model for the consumer because, in a sense, you're paying twice. When you watch The Daily Show, for example, you pay the cable company to bring Comedy Central's programming into your home. But you also contribute to Comedy Central's bottom line by watching its ads. However, the Internet allows you to connect directly to Comedy Central without the cable company go-between. You only pay once -- either with your eyeballs on ComedyCentral.com, or with your wallet on iTunes. (Sure, you have to pay for Internet access, but if you consider it a necessary utility rather than an optional luxury, as the FCC's national broadband plan clearly does, then that cost is incidental. That is, access to streaming TV shows isn't the primary reason you buy Internet access. It's a bonus.)

We're already familiar with two business models for web TV: Hulu's ad-supported programming and iTunes' micro-payment system of about $2 per ad-free show. Both of these are preferable to cable not only because they're more cost-effective but because they allow the viewer a greater degree of control. You only pay for what you watch, whereas with cable you pay primarily for things you'll never watch. Americans watch on average 5 hours of TV a day, so a cable subscriber with 100 channels is only consuming 0.2% of the programming he or she is charged for. With the average cable bill swelling to $64 a month in 2009 from $47.50 a month in 2004, ditching cable for web-based TV is an increasingly attractive option.* High-end consumer electronics companies like Sonos and Sony already sell products to link your TV wirelessly to your computer or directly to the Internet.

The two greatest obstacles for web TV are video quality, which lags online, and certain programming. While more TV shows are available online all the time, news and sports remain the big holdouts. The problem is that these shows are best viewed in real time, but live streaming technology still produces jumpy and relatively low quality video. Foxnews.com just can't sustain a million viewers flooding its web site for four hours every evening. So news shows opt to upload high-quality clips after the broadcast is over and sports events tend to not make it online at all. But broadband speeds have risen for years (excepting a recent stagnation) and the FCC aims to make it many times faster.

Inevitably, broadband capacity will catch up to the monumental demands of live-streaming 60 Minutes and Monday Night Football to millions-strong audiences. The gradual rise in capacity will also close the gap in video quality between web and cable. When YouTube launched in 2005, few users had the bandwidth to watch the videos. Five years later, not only can nearly everyone watch, but YouTube has introduced progressively higher resolutions to take advantage of growing bandwidth. Eventually, the picture quality of web videos could match or even exceed that of high-definition TV. After all, cable video quality is fixed. Ratcheting up the resolution, as with the introduction of digital high-definition TV, requires cable providers to overhaul entire networks of physical infrastructure and requires consumers to buy new hardware. Cable can't keep that up.

It's not hard to foresee a day when Americans come home and, using an Internet TV system that would probably look a lot like your DVR menu, queue up the latest situation comedy or key in to a live news broadcast. Maybe shows will have traditional ads, maybe they'll be ad free but cost a dollar each, or maybe viewers will get to choose. But payment model would be just the beginning of the changes. Networks, no longer forced to fill exactly 24 hours of daily programming, would act more like movie studios, releasing as many or as few titles as they wished. High-quality shows would prosper as networks dropped the unneeded filler. The market would open up to anyone with a camera and a server host, inviting a flood of independent TV shows produced on a shoestring by directors with broad creative license. Ironically, the much-troubled print journalism business could find its way into broadcast. Outlets like the New York Times and the Atlantic already put out video. One day, Atlantic TV could compete with Nightline and Meet The Press. We're no Katie Couric, but it's better than paying a cable bill.

_______________

*Of course, I know that cable is cheaper because it bundles. Five hours of TV a day multiplied by $2 per hour-long show would means $300 a month on cable. That's too much. So what's more likely is that iTunes or Hulu begins experimenting with different pay models. One can imagine, say, $10 a month for infinite access to Hulu, or a Sam's Club-style program where paying a low monthly subscription rate gives viewers a cheaper micropayment rate on each iTunes-sold show. The specific strategies don't particularly matter now. The point is that there's no cable-bill middle-man, and that cuts significant fees on manpower and infrastructure upkeep.

Bernard Madoff beaten up in prison

The jailed fraudster Bernard Madoff was beaten up in prison by a fellow inmate in a row over money, according to prisoners.

Madoff, 71, suffered a broken nose, fractured ribs and cuts to his head and face after he was reportedly attacked last December by a prisoner who believed Madoff owed him money.

After pleading guilty last year to running an enormous Ponzi scheme which tricked investors out of billions of dollars, Madoff is serving a 150-year-jail sentence at Butner federal prison in North Carolina.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Madoff's assailant was a "beefy" body builder with a drug conviction and a black belt in judo.

Rumours of an assault were denied at the time by the Bureau of Prisons, which claimed Madoff had been moved to the prison's hospital because he was suffering from dizziness and high blood pressure.

However, the Journal said it had been told by three separate sources, including a former and current inmate, that Madoff was beaten up.

Prison officials said they investigated the incident but found no evidence of an assault.

A former Butner inmate claimed that Madoff, who has been in prison for eight months, gave him investment advice when they met in the prison library, where the fraudster spends much of his free time.

Fellow inmates claimed Madoff had garnered some respect in the prison because of the scale of his fraud.

On Wednesday, two former Madoff employees were charged with helping him programme an old computer to generate false records.

Lawyers for Jerome O'Hara and George Perez said they will plead not guilty to charges of conspiracy, falsifying records of a broker dealer and falsifying records of an investment adviser.

According to the 2 forummers warning of gold crisis that is similar to that of Bernard Madoff's fraud case,   that is to say 'someone' has fraud some hugh amt of money on gold investments  and it is worst of than  Bernard Madoff's Ponzi's scheme?  B Madoff fraud US$50 billions.

Ponzi's scheme - the fraud used the New comers (investors) money to pay to Old Investors?

It goes like this : The Cheat (investment company) earn big money in pure 'Paper transactions'??   A buys GLD ETF and A's money goes to pay B who sells the ETF ?

Ok, buy gold bar, but make sure we buy the REAL one.     Recent years, china has been world largest gold producer and this has attracted world wide investors .......but, hahaha!  are the gold real one??    They can have their watermelon mixed with red dye so as to make it look red and juicy and  so can mix some gold colour to some stone and claimed that they are real GOLD?   LOL!

Gold is always better than the Dollar.

So what if Gold is not supported by the Dollar.

Gold can be supported by other currencies like Euro, Yen or Yun.

US is printing so much paper money that the Dollar is becoming pretty weak.

I rather hold Gold than US Dollar.

If the entire Global Economy collapse and all paper money become worthless, Gold will still have value.

Tks for posting the property link .:)  That website Property Guru, one property appears in many pages and i wonder why they never update their website?

RE: my dream retirement property -

If the apartment comes with  valet parking, breakfast prepared.....I know of someone staying in States and the condo has this excellent service...but, the maintenance is like US$1000 plus.   phew......

Actually, singapore's peroperty is still considered 'not so expensive' compared to japan, Us and korea, their psf is already $1000/2000  plus minimum .  In s'pore, 2000 plus psf is already considered  super-ex like those in town areas.

Tks.

ask yourself..

would you believe something made of paper that can be printed over and over again..

which is not backed by anything

OR

would u believe something tangible that has withstood the ancient medival times, and has shrinking

supply as years go by, can't be easily produced by printing and is a source of money.

Paper is a ponzi scheme...Anything paper is a ponzi scheme.. just waiting for the next greater fool to

hold onto to the "hope".. as long as more pple participate, the greater the belief will be in the scheme and

the scheme prolongs itself till the masses lose faith in it...

Salute,

Understand your concern that if you let out the info, people start to get panic. But, after the Subprime Crisis and collapsed of Lehmen brothers,  the world has already quite well prepared to know or accept news worst than this.

Even if your news is something like : Gold is not going to be the 'back up' for the dollars, we are well prepared.   LOL

So, care to share?  Tks.  :)

Who is cheating?

How is the cheat being done?

Are you referring to Gold ETF or Spot Gold or Both?

Your statement is very interesting.

What is the true story about gold that people don't want to reveal?

Please enlighten us.

Thanks.

Salute      ( Date: 22-Mar-2010 14:52) Posted:

I just know about the gold one. Thought the world is so messy, wanted to buy gold, but it's really scary about this fact.  I don't think people(those who know) would like to reveal the truth of the story inside the gold itself as it may cause panic in the whole world.

However, as I said before, people still trade and punt the ETF gold as not many people know about it. So don't quote me if ETF goes up to $2000 one day..I just tell you what I know for now.

Don't believe gold will go to $5000, think by then Food is more important---means survival. the best is to own land to plant vegetation. Congrats to those in sharejunction who own small garden in their villas..........hehe, don't know how the world will be by then and don't know when

20%  S-chips listed here, 9 or more still cant pay debts, some are already suspended / delisted.

Its understandable why SGX  has  to set up 'Post-listing Monintoring Unit'  for S-chips.  Some family-owned companies are not able to draw line between Shareholdings and Management. Post-listing Education has been enforced thougg, but   the S-chips companies are still 'tumbling' their ways to become a globalised listed company. During their learning process,  along the way, there are  bound to have failures and casualties.

So, as a shareholder of these companies, if you believe the companies have potential, you may have your hands in it, if not, if you are the UNLUCKY ones, you will be part of the Casualties.

after few yrs listing in singpore and profited from it and  then delist  or let it rot and got  it suspended then set up another new company in china.....真利害!

My general analysis of s-chips from gaining IPO to being delisted -

Why a compnay want to boost their earning?

1)  in order to gain authorisation for an IPO,

2) to issue new shares or;

3)  to avoid being delisted.

Along the line,a company's share price can be propped up as the share price is the key basis for managerial compensatoin,.   The higher the share price, the more they get the $$.

We can see that there were sudden big surge of some s-chips companies share price , thereafter, price dipped dramatically and then, company being delisted or suspended.
