Tiger Airways posts strong operating numbers in April

Mainboard-listed low-cost carrier Tiger Airways has announced strong operating numbers for the month of April. Total passenger volume was a record 5.03 million people, up 54 per cent on year. The average load factor the percentage of seats sold increased 6 percentage points to 85 per cent.

Tiger Group chief executive Tony Davis said the numbers clearly show that the carrier is attracting more passengers with its low fares. Going forward, Tiger Airways will set up a third Australian base at Avalon Airport in Victoria and fly to more destinations within Greater China, India and Australia.

oh yes, Ang mo's NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION is not very good .  Some ang mo friends very 'stingy'.  When they came here, we treated them to nice restaurants, drinking session, by sacrificing our family time to take them out.   but, When we went to their country, they didnt reciprocate.    as in, you die there your own problem.  On contrary, their verbal communication is super good... Hi, buddy, sweety, hows your day...Good day, buddy, have a nice weekend.......blah... hahaha!

Also, did not see any progressive jackpot more than a million dollar..

Genting Highlands in Malaysia is the best for taking care of gamblers' welfare, ie. stomach -- no wonder they are so successful...

Those who smoke, can consider givig up smoking.  My friend gave up smoking recently and he is saving few hundred a month.  Go casino once a week (to distress),  pay $100 entrance fee, the rest he  bets on slot machine or once a while at table, still earning some money besides those few hundred's savings.

Gamble to distress, within own limit, its fine.  :)

My target price might be higher than the analysts'. :)

No one dares to give it a higher TP for it is still new industry in singapore.

What can be more exciting than gaming industry?   Too bad, horse racing industry not listed, if not, IPO will be very attractive.

Go to the nightclub or karaoke,  must spend few hundred dollars, might as well go gambling, still got 50% chance of winning.

Went there last Sat but do not quite like the place.  Only two tiny restaurants selling something

like dim sum fast food at restaurant price and have to queue up.

Do not have my favourite table game "pontoon".

While at gaming table, I requested for some hot drinks but the answer is "sorry, the F&B

cannot cope because too many people".  Waited for another hour also didn't get the drink.

At least you can find some coffee machines at RWS where you can help yourself but nothing at MBS.

Very dissappointed with their service.   Paid $100 entrance fee and they cannot offer me

a cup of coffee.  Will never go there again

Chinese companies seeking to list in Malaysia must lift investors confidence

By LEE KIAN SEONG
lks@thestar.com.my

Change in perception needed

THERE was a lot of buzz in the market when three Chinese companies – Xingquan International Sports Holdings Ltd, Multi Sports Holdings Ltd and XiDeLang Holdings Ltd – listed on Bursa Malaysia in the second half of last year.

However, the weak performance of these stocks since then has disappointed a lot of investors.

Some analysts point out that Malaysian investors need greater awareness of the fundamentals of Chinese companies listed here.

With two more Chinese companies – Sozo Global Ltd and K-Star Sports Ltd – scheduled to list soon, how will investors react?

Private equity banker Sherilyn Foong said investors’ lack of confidence in China companies seeking to list in Malaysia was not due to poor fundamentals or high valuations.
Sherilyn Foong ... ‘Offerors or prom oters are taking the opportunity accorded by the listing to sell out their shareholdings.’

“It is because offerors or promoters are taking the opportunity accorded by the listing to sell out their shareholdings. On the contrary, the earnings performance (of these companies) have been commendable,” she told StarBiz.

She believes this “selling out” behaviour was contributing to the weak share price performance of these China companies listed on Bursa Malaysia.

Foong, who expects more Chinese listings in Malaysia this year, said companies should restructure their initial public offerings (IPOs) to reduce the offer for sale portions; i.e. the portions where the promoters are selling as part of the IPO exercise.

“This will help to allay investors fear that the promoters are cashing out,” she said.

In April, StarBiz reported that a wider moratorium on the sale of shares was being applied on new listings of China companies in Malaysia.

Investment banks sponsoring the new IPOs, in consultation with the SC, have initiated the move that imposes at least a six-month moratorium not only on the promoters of the company – which has been the usual practice – but also on a list of other shareholders who have emerged prior to the IPO.

The move is aimed at preventing a repeat of the heavy selling by a pre-IPO investor in one of the three listed Chinese companies.

According to OSK Research, there is a perception among investors that only weak China companies would choose to list here.

It also said that investors were sceptical of their earnings following accounting irregularities involving several China companies listed in Singapore.

“They (investors) believe that any Chinese IPO will just underperform following the three Chinese listings recently,” it said in a note.

OSK said to dispel these perceptions, China companies listed in Malaysia must deliver good earnings track record and payout dividends to show that they are genuinely generating cash.

“The management should be prudent and give achievable guidance. They should not over-promise and under deliver as it will dampen the market’s confidence towards these Chinese companies,” it said.

OSK said consistent updates and communication with the investment community was also necessary to lift investors’ confidence.

On company developments, Xingquan International, which recently concluded its Autumn/Winter 2010 Sales Fair, recorded a 35% rise in sales orders to about RM323mil compared with orders received at the same event last year.

The company plans to further expand in inland China during the next financial year ending June 30, 2011.

For the second quarter ended Dec 31, 2009, Xingquan International posted a 34.1% jump in net profit to RM30.6mil while revenue surged 61.3% to RM179.7mil from a year ago.

The company’s share price closed at RM1.15 last Friday, up 1 sen. Xingquan International’s offer price was RM1.71 for retailers and RM1.80 for institutional investor.

On May 6, Multi Sports proposed a one-for-four rights issue, which will raise up to RM36mil for the construction of a new plant in Jinjiang City, China.

The company plans to undertake a subscription of 54 million right shares at a price to be determined later.

The Chinese shoe sole-maker intends to increase its production capacity to 79.6 million in 2011 from 24 million in 2009 to meet growing demand.

For financial year ended Dec 31, 2009, the company posted a net profit of RM56.7mil, 22.7% higher than a year before. Its revenue rose to RM237.9mil from RM193.3mil in the previous corresponding period.

Multi Sports share price shed 1 sen last Friday to close at 41 sen. Its issue price was 85 sen during the company’s IPO.

XiDeLang posted a net profit of RM68.4mil on revenue of RM385mil for the financial year ended Dec 31, 2009.

The company is expected to benefit from the growing sports wear industry in China.

The first phase of XiDeLang’s plant expansion exercise is expected to be completed by the third quarter of this year. The second phase is expected to start in mid-2011 and would be completed by end-2012.

XiDeLang’s share price closed unchanged at 35 sen on May 7. Its IPO price was 58 sen.

The Irish Times - Saturday, May 8, 2010

Greeks paying heavily now for Olympian folly

SIDELINE CUT: The Athens Olympics of 2004 proved an exercise in delusion and greatly contributed to the current parlous state of the Greek national finances, writes KEITH DUGGAN

OF ALL the headlines concerning the social unrest in Athens and the parlous state of the Greek national finances, none summed up the situation quite as perfectly as that old reliable of news satire, the Onion. Greece: 2,500 Years Past Its Prime, ran the headline.

When the International Olympic Committee awarded the 2004 Olympics games to the city of Athens, it was obvious the pageantry and symbolism of those Games would lean heavily on ancient Greek civilisation. Many felt the Olympics ought to have returned to the city in 1996, for the centennial anniversary of the first modern Games. But the Athens bid was considered flawed, lacking in specifics and a convincing infrastructural plan. And so Atlanta won the bid and responded by staging an Olympics that was internationally lambasted.

Eight years later, the Games finally came home to Greece. As television pictures of Greek citizens protesting on the streets and clashing with police flashed around the world, I couldnt help but wonder how many Greeks would hand back the temporary shot of national pride that accompanied those Games in return for a cheque recouping the cost. The precise cost of the Athens Olympics has always been a moveable feast.

For three years, it was the most expensive Olympics in history, until China spent a monstrous 28 billion on their fortnight of sporting extravaganza. The Athens Games were supposed to total at 5 billion, according to the predictions of the PASOK socialist government running the country in 2000. But the final cost was closer to twice that and, given that Greece was the smallest nation ever to host the Games, that represented a stunning outlay of finance.

But what it is about the idea of hosting the Olympics that nation after nation finds irresistible? Cost good sense cannot compete with the dreamy thought of being the capital of the universe for those two weeks and the marketing potential for the host city overrules the hard billions required to satisfy the floating palace of IOC delegates who insist on certain standards for its family.

The scale of disruption that hosting the Olympics brings to the lucky city is often overlooked. The East End of London has awoken to a chorus of builders whistles and kanga guns for more mornings than its dwellers care to remember at this stage and, even as Britains economic forecast continues to blacken, the intensity of that London effort will become more apparent as the 2012 Olympics loom. There is a good chance that because London is such a magnificent city it can probably absorb the Games without having to write blank cheques in order to avoid humiliation on an international scale.

But with money tight, the London organisers are in for anxious times. The Chinese had the last tree manicured months before their opening ceremony. Those of us in the stadium on that muggy night in August 2008 wont forget it. Putin and Bush were among the world leaders in the Birds Nest watching some 2,000 Chinese drummers star in a breathtakingly choreographed show that felt like the apotheosis of international muscle-flexing. It took place, of course, just months before the stock markets of the world began to go haywire. Anthony Lane, an Englishman and film critic with The New Yorker, wrote a letter from Beijing in which he had fun imagining the reaction of Sebastian Coe, head of the London Olympics, as he watched this spectacle of Chinese ingenuity.

I tried to pick him out among the VIPs on that first Friday but without success. He may have been hiding in the mens room, calling home to order more light bulbs. You can imagine the rising panic in his voice: They had 2008 drummers all lit up. Yes, 2008. And what have we got so far? Elton John on a trampoline.

Sandwiched between the Sydney Olympics, which came close to casual perfection and the Beijing Games, which were relentlessly, frighteningly clockwork-perfect, the Athens Games were quickly forgotten about. Perhaps that is why they have rarely been mentioned in the debates about Greeces ravaged state.

It should be remembered Athens were never given a fair crack at the Games. No sooner had the last firework in Sydney been extinguished than suggestions began to circulate that the Greeks would not get their act together in time, that the traffic would be chaotic, the weather insufferable and the citizens bad-tempered. In the paranoid mood that took hold after 2001, the Greeks had to cough up for an increased security budget. In the months before the Games began, the Greeks ran pre-inspection tours to prove that the facilities were in place. And they were.

The Athenians ran a very good Games and the Acropolis provided a perfect backdrop for NBC and the other major broadcasters. Locals were friendly and enthusiastic about the Games but in a low-key way, never forgetting the Olympics was a chimera, the most expensive magic show on earth. The low point for the hosts came at the beginning, when their leading athletes Konstantinos Kenteris and Ekatarina Thanou staged an absurd motorbike accident to avoid drug testing. The high point featured the old Olympic Stadium, where the marathon concluded and the staging of some of the field events throwing and putting at the Ancient Stadium at Olympia. No city in the world could or even will compete with Athens for that heritage.

But the Athens Games never quite recovered from the bad pre-publicity. The Greeks the nation that gave the world Archimedes and Plato were portrayed as slacking in their efforts to have their city ready in time. It was unfair and wrong but it didnt matter. Once the Olympics was over, Athens didnt get a backward glance.

Reports would appear at times about the rising cost of the Olympics for Athens. Prior to the Beijing Games, photographs appeared showing some of the Athenian venues in various states of neglect and abandonment graffiti daubed on walls, facilities empty and rusting and in some cases used as shelter for squatters. The city didnt know what to do with all these sports facilities. The estimated cost of maintaining them was 500 million and counting.

How sinfully and maddeningly wasteful that must seem to the beleaguered Greeks now. Reluctantly signed up to their austerity bill and facing international loans of 120 billion, the Greeks could use the money it cost to stage those Games. The 2004 Olympics hardly caused the bleak situation in Greece but they contributed to it. A restless mood now governs the former Olympic city and their worried fellow-Europeans look on. This weekend, Britain will fret and ponder how to form a government capable of tackling the worst economic conditions since the post-war period. Meanwhile, the hammers and saws continue at a furious rate.

The Olympic clock is ticking and whatever happens, London must save face. For the Greeks, that never happened. The 2004 Olympics proved to be an an exercise in delusion and it created a debt that has contributed to the scenes in Athens as it is today; a smoking, troubled and flat-broke city.
