19 May 10 - Singapore, vietnam and china display the greatest consumer spending !

By William Stolerman

According to a recent Mastercard survey, the positive perception of the economic landscape in Asia is fuelling a boom in luxury spending.

"The Asia/Pacific region rebounded in economic growth as early as the second half of last year, and regional recovery has continued to gain traction this year," said Yuwa Hedrick-Wong, MasterCard Worldwide's economic adviser for the Asia/Pacific.

The MasterCard Worldwide Index of Consumer Confidence placed the region top in eight of the 14 markets as robust economic growth ignited a sense of optimism.

People are spending more freely again on non-essential, luxury goods, as Hedrick-Wong explained: "While consumers in this region were amongst the first to cut back drastically on discretionary spending 18 months ago, they now seem confident and ready to significantly increase their discretionary expenditures ... thereby contributing to the momentum of recovery."

The countries which displayed the greatest consumer confidence were Singapore, Vietnam and China.

COSCO ready to pump more money into Greece

Athens: China and COSCO are ready to begin investing in Greece, horizontally and vertically in terms of shipping activities, if an agreement with Greek authorities is reached, Capt. Wei Jiafu, president and CEO of COSCO, emphasised during a meeting in Athens with Economy, Competitiveness and Shipping Minister Louka Katseli on Wednesday.

The meeting, which also included Theodore Veniamis, the president of the Union of Greek Shiponwers, representatives from the tourism and business sectors and the president of the Hellenic Banks' Association, V. Rapanos, covered all business and shipping (ANA-MPA) plans between China and Greece. Capt. Wei is currently on an official four-day visit to Greece, accompanied by high-ranking officials of COSCO, a Chinese state organisation.
COSCO has already established activities at the Ikonio cargo terminal of Piraeus port. [20/05/10]

May be you are right, but I see it in different way.  Unlike the last financial crisis, this time the traders don't just simply dump whatsoever shares crazy and madly. You can find some counters with good fundamental conditions and records not drop so much and in fact, everytime it drops, many shares will be bought by another.  If you look at the trading volume of Genting sp yesterday, you will know what I mean.  Now any single trader try to look for the opportunity in every crisis, they become brave and smart, no just simply a blind follower

All singtel outlets add up together, they are not more than one block of HDB flats  How much you expect their share price to be in such an EXpensive land of SINGAPORE.    Few dollars share price for singtel is more than enough.   LOL!

dumbdumb      ( Date: 21-May-2010 10:21) Posted:

20 years ago, 5 room HDB flat at $70K to $100K (direct from HDB), Singtel at $2.50

Today, 5 room HDB flat at $300K to $400K (direct from HDB), Singtel up slightly at $2.85 (but maybe not for long)

20 years later, 5 romm HDB flat maybe at $1 million (with inflation), and our dear Singtel will still be at only $3 at most.

Maybe Singtel will become the largest market cap stock to the smallest mkt cap stock in 20 years time.

It is good to watch the market on the sideline.  Do nothing,  Look for good fundamental stocks that has not moved much from beginning of last year.   If there are any such stocks,. then buy.  If cannot find any, just stop and watch.

My first lesson was taught to me  : If i am not trading for living, just invest with a small amount of money, buy one stock at a time, with very small lots and monitor and see it grows into profit, regardless big or small.    Once confidecne is on our side, take the courage to trade a bit more.  Still, keep to small lots.  TA is very technical and very 'manipulative' ,  i dont rely on it all the time except for entry and exit price.

Singapore rawks!  Property price here will be keep increasing.  We are different from others which might face property bubbles. Thanks to our healthy financial system.

If more foreigners who come here to invest in business with a capital of 2 millions, they can buy residential property not more than 50% of their total investment therefore, i would think Mass market condos will be very attractive to them in terms of buying condos.

If MBS cant find a good mathematician in US to help dispose 70 million, they are lucky they can get good people here.  Mr Obama had noted that singaporeans' middle-schoolers outperformed theirs 3 to 1.  Few of their states are adopting our method of teaching mathematics.
