Just a question to all forumers here...

when you ask a person why he/she is playing the market, the invariable reply is, "to make money."

my question is: what are you making money for?

there's a quote somewhere, by Gibran, i think, that goes, "tell me who you love, and i'll tell you who you are." Swap the first 'who' for 'what', perhaps, in considering the question.

Any forumers kind enough to answer? my first new post. give business leh... haha.

hm. since i asked i guess i havta share too...elf has very simple reasons for wanting to make money:

1) To buy my grandmother's flat for her ('cos the loan running out and no one can/wants to pay)

2) To give my parents the kind of life they could never afford to give me.

how abt the people here? :)

hi chippie! *hehe!* :))))

nope, nothing new. no TA stocks on my radar currently. I feel that TA cannot work accurately enough in such a market 'cos sentiment is too volatile. so have been locking in TA profits and shifting funds to my FA holding(s).

victorian was right about good FA stocks withstanding corrections. fully agree with that. :)

any counters you're watching now, or so flooded in cash you're happily swimming in your pool of dollars in your new Sentosa Cove condo? :P

hey Fairygal, don't really get what you mean? TA is factual, not theoretical, in that it maps the price/vol/momentum etc, and gives a realistic picture. It gets 'theoretical' only if you start imagining extrapolations where none exist...which does happen to even the best traders, unfortunately (greed factor. I can personally vouch for this, and i'm only a novice. 'tuition fees'. haha.).

i wouldn't decide a sell just based on RSI alone. Esp when some counters don't respond to this at all. You need to combine other factors. A note of caution: As sexy as it sounds, it is very, very difficult to be a TA purist; with the exception of singaporegal and a few others here, most use a melange of methods.

Sometimes, instinct is your best guide.

As iPunter cynically and rightly puts it, it's not easy to deal with the market. The odds will always be in favour of the House; as the Player, your aim is to choose the best game (ie, the best trading strat for yourself, based on your personality) to even the odds. Not turn it in your favour, 'cos that's near impossible.

But too much talk is pointless, as he says. And i'm certainly not qualified to give advice. In the end, your bank account is your final measure of success. And in the end there's only one thing: follow the trend, whichever way, however way(ipunter, singaporegal and sporeguy can guide you better on the intricacies of TA.)

Final thought: the aim of playing the market is money. But money's just a tool. Always make sure you're its master and not its slave. That was some of the best advice i read. In this current climate of greed, hope it helps. :)

chipchip66, my vote goes for takeover too. ;)

tho they'd better offer fair value man....altho considering brokerage houses own most of it, i don't think they can 'trick' them as easily as they can the small retailers...

let's wait and see. that's the only thing we can do now. speculation's pointless and only serves to drive up emotions. Gotta be factual.

when's the announcement, if anyone knows? i just got back from wk.

hehe billywows, don't get scared leh...if big boys like you get scared, how about little elves. hehe.

anyhow, haven't most of the gurus here been predicting a correction? it's just part of the cycle of the market if it does happen... just sooner than expected, that's all. :)

newmoon is so....cryptic....he sometimes speaks like the delphi oracle....*awe*

billywows, yep, it's tech earning worries. but that's not the main point: the money is clearly going out of the US. Qn is, where to?

and em. i wouldn't expect a simultaneous oil up, dow down. It's more likely to be sequential. If they're positioning for the long term, it wouldn't be in a day or two either. And i don't believe all global funds are gonna park in everything in oil too.

Right now, global money's unsure and looking for fresh leads. The only thing now is asian equities. that's why the money has been here.

why i said STI is going to be torn tmrw: there'll be traditionalists who follow the dow; and others who think the new direction is asia's (victorian's mention of decoupling with the US). Will be an interesting day tmrw on the STI. expect profit taking tho.

hi beidou,

i think whether one decides to sell or hold also depends on whether you're an FA or TA trader.

Your book appears to be based on FA, in which case, yes, holding long term (5+ years) and gradually putting in money regularly will give you a winner over the years, provided you are able to pick a good company. In this current market for instance, most of the stocks are overpriced. Safe bets are your blue chips; tho most are too high now.

If you're a TA trader though, then hehe, how i personally make my sell calls:

1) When the trend reads sell (RSI overbought, A/D and chaikin dipping/topping out; most obviously, when the lag indicators start heading for a cross. price vol charts matter a lot too)

2) When i see another counter which i think has better upside than the one i'm currently holding.

oh, uncle sam's bleeding.

DJIA -75.07 12,490.46
NASDAQ -20.83 2,430.48
S&P 500 -5.52 1,424.98

billywows, your reason for the dip is given by giantlow's post. Crude is rising. iPunter has a point too. The funds flowing out of the US have to go somewhere. the qn is, where. STI's gonna be torn two ways tmrw then.

yongjiu....if i recall rightly, i've only given two roses in this forum....this elf doesn't give roses for nothing...

must at least be like billywows, giving me flowers, and even a mousie!!!

heehee...

oh, nice take on the Warren Buffet thing. I like his other philo tho, that 'you don't trade what you don't understand.'

and yes. SPC is fundamentally cheap at this level. PE is 7x.

wheee....

ace6868, think might be best to sell before friday. my estimate's 1.33-1.35 (prob wed), but the institutional sells have been very heavy; likely to depress it when the retailers rush to buy.

ah. the power of one sentence from MM Lee. 72 points. ah.

hehe. well, is it just me, or do other voices of reason start to feel ignored by the market? TA doesn't work at all now; or at least, it's beyond my skills; way too volatile. am relying almost solely on FA now.

think it'll still go up tomorrow tho.
