Greece default is unavoidable, is just a matter of time. Europe debt crisis will be the major issue. Italy, Spanish problem will re-surface soon.. Dow will be down from here if it can't breakout the 12800 pts. I think mkt is going to be down . If STI cannot hold 2680  points  then it may signal the Bear mkt  is here for a longer time.

Greece 'will not cede budget control to EU'

Greece will not cede control over its budget to the European Union as has been proposed by Germany as a condition to a second bailout, Greek government sources told AFP on Saturday.

" Greece will not discuss such a possibility," one of the sources said. " It is out of the question that we would accept it, these are matters of national sovereignty."

BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany is pushing for Greece to relinquish control over its budget policy to European institutions as part of discussions over a second rescue package, a European source told Reuters on Friday.

‘Surprise’ Rally

“While we expected market conditions to improve this year, we have been surprised by the speed and intensity of the rally,” Barclays Bank Plc strategists including Piero Ghezzi and Michael Gavin wrote in a report released today. “We do not think valuations are stretched and believe differing year-to- date performance suggests relative value opportunities.”

China’s central bank will let the nation’s five biggest banks increase first-quarter lending by as much as 5 percent from a year earlier, two people at state banks with knowledge of the matter said this week, declining to be identified because the move hasn’t been announced. Economic growth decelerated to the slowest pace in 10 quarters in the three months to Dec. 31 as Europe’s debt crisis curbed export demand.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Greece will eventually default on its debts, even if the nation reaches a deal with the private sector to restructure its debts, according to a panel of experts.

John Chambers, head of sovereign ratings at Standard & Poor's, said Tuesday that the deal being negotiated between Greece and private sector investors would " in all likelihood" qualify as a default.

The proposed restructuring aims to reduce Greece's debt load to 120% of its economic output by 2020, from 160% currently.

But even at that level, Greece's debt burden would still be " very high" and the nation's credit rating will remain " very low," said Chambers.

S& P could assign Greece a " selective default" rating by the fall, according to Chambers.

Chambers made his remarks during a panel discussion on European sovereign debt hosted by Bloomberg Link in New York.

Just sharing on  Inflation v Deflation....

Keeping interest rates low may have the   APPEARANCE of stimulation, but that effect is   NOT   being
passed on by the banks. Interest Rates on loans, even credit cards, have not declined in proportion to
the drop in interest rates at the Fed. Therefore, the deflation aspect is shifting profits to banks further
bailing them out to make up for their losses in the speculation of mortgages. NOTHING is being done to
help the people or the economy whatsoever! They are NOT lowering borrowing costs of consumers or
business so the Fed can pretend it is helping the economy, but it is ONLY helping the banks. If the banks
passed on the low rates to borrowers, then there might be some stimulus effect.
It is NOT lower interest rates that will create inflation – but HIGHER! There are two primary factors to
understand. (1) Keeping rates low (really negative) insofar as what banks are paying people for their
cash, makes things like holding physical gold less onerous because you are not losing interest income. (2)
Eventually the low rates will NOT stimulate borrowing, but a migration of capital from cash to private
assets including stock where there is a real rate of return in dividends not attainable in a bank and this
sets the stage for rising rates as there becomes LESS cash on deposit at the banks - COMPETITION. (3)
When rates rise, this will send the government deficits into hype-active status causing the Sovereign
Debt Crisis to accelerate.
Therefore, the whole point of reviewing historical events is critical for the plot remains the same – it is
just the   actors playing   character role that change. The Panic of 1796-1797caused the end of Debtors
Prison ONLY because so many   FAMOUS POLITICAL people went to prison.   The US was the emerging
market and thus it was the same effect we saw in Russia and China after 1989. There are still booms
within a declining trend but each rally fails to make new highs. Hence the trend remains intact. Those
who cannot see the pattern in history are condemned to repeat the same mistakes. It was nice to hear

Newt Gingrich say he isn't running for president to " represent Goldman Sachs." But talk is cheap.

Chiong for so long, high time for it to take a break and pull back.

so sti at 2916 closed up +21....so is this going to be the case like what they said below ???

When the market resumes trading after the Chinese New Year holidays on Wednesday, we are likely to see the STI retesting the key resistance at 2,910. This is a key level because it is the resistance of the last significant highs, Fibo 50% of a major peak and trough, and the 200MA. It is not a level that can be defeated too easily considering that the index has already rack-up considerable gain without a decent pull back since January 3 where the market is quite overbought. Failure to overcome 2,910 calls for a pull back to 2,790 and 2,730. On the contrary, successful breakout from 2,910 will likely see the index propel to 3,000 ~ 3,200./marketwizads///.

very soon we will know the outcome.......cheers!!!

Stocks slump after unimpressive U.S. growth

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- U.S. stocks retreated early Friday as jittery investors digested a weaker-than-expected economic growth report and as Europe's debt crisis still looms in the background.

The Dow Jones industrial average (INDU) dropped 55 points, or 0.4%, the S& P 500 (SPX) slipped 2 points. or 0.2%. The Nasdaq (COMP) flipped between small gains and losses.

The decline came as investors reacted to the government's first reading on fourth-quarter gross domestic product. The United States economy picked up speed at the end of 2011, growing at an annual rate of 2.8%, as consumers increased their spending. But the data fell short of the 3.2% forecast, based on a consensus of economists surveyed by Briefing.com.

While the worse-than-expected figure is disheartening, " the real disappointment is in the details" of the report, said Mark Chandler, global head of currency at Brown Brother Harriman. While inventories rose during the quarter, accounting for a large part of the growth, consumption growth, a measure of demand, was weak.

Investors had been hoping for news that would back up growing optimism about the nation's economic recovery. Instead, the news seems to jive with the Federal Reserve's lower outlook for the economy.
