Emerging-Market Equity Funds See Big Outflows

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Emerging-market equity funds saw their biggest outflows in three years during the week ended Feb. 2, suggesting increased investor caution on these fast-growing regions.

Investors pulled $7.02 billion out of emerging-market equity funds followed by fund tracker EPFR Global. Those data include outflows of $4.6 billion from exchange-traded funds focused on emerging markets, the largest such outflows these ETFs have ever seen.

The fund tracker found that the rotation out of emerging markets that started in the fourth quarter due to worries about valuations and inflationary pressures picked up steam in late January and early February.

The outflows from emerging-market equity funds came amid continued political turmoil in Egypt, which last week helped drive a movement out of riskier assets, a class that emerging markets are generally seen as belonging to.

Developing economies from China to Brazil are still growing well, but that is also driving inflation in these countries and pushing policymakers to raise interest rates. On Friday, Indonesia became the latest to raise rates.

" In a number of emerging markets there should be a slowdown from central bankers tightening," said Quincy Krosby, market strategist with Prudential Financial.

EPFR noted that the outflows from emerging-market equity funds were the heaviest in three years in the week ended Feb. 2. Emerging-market bond funds had a relatively flat performance, with about $26 million of outflows. Meanwhile, U.S. equity funds had inflows of $4.6 billion, while U.S. bond funds had inflows of $1.2 billion. Russia, meanwhile, benefited from higher oil prices, according to EPFR, with Russian equity funds seeing inflows of $195.8 million for the week. EPFR found that Middle Eastern and African regional equity funds had outflows of $80.4 million for the week amid concerns about Egypt.

" Emerging markets have been outperformers and you are seeing an overall reallocation," said Krosby. " You are seeing money going to the U.S. market because valuations are more attractive."

Bank of America Merrill Lynch recently wrote in a research note that its fund-managers survey reveals investors have been scaling back their overweight positions in emerging markets since November and inflows to emerging markets at $4 billion year to date are lagging flows to developed markets at $24 billion. The bank noted that flows to emerging markets are likely to recover once inflation peaks and yields fall again.

Despite the most recent caution on emerging markets, some strategists are staying bullish on these countries' long-term prospects.

" Emerging-market equities are going to face headwinds in the near term but this is the time to start accumulating [positions]," said Komal Sri-Kumar, chief global strategist of TCW Group. He said he is remaining bullish on emerging markets longer term because countries such as China and Brazil have much faster growth prospects than the U.S.

Under the baton of Presidentn Obama, US$ depreciating will benefit US in terms of their export (cos it is cheaper to buy US goods now), cheaper to tour in US which in turn, boosting their tourism, and many other benenfits like cheaper manufacutring cost and cheaper to set up factory in US now compared to having it in CHINA ? Is the Gold price being manipulated based on people's mind set that : " buy gold to hedge against US$" ?

What if the sudden sell down of gold when these people have had enough of the game?

Remember back in 1987, there was a sudden 'Sell down' of stocks in stock market? The culprit triggered its computer system in selling down the stocks, which caused chain effect, and all the 'set-loss' button started to trigger.............

When Genting has fallen for the past few days to $2.00 low, there isn't any report regarding their outlook bla bla bla. But when Genting rise 8 cents, then the positive reports all come out (regarding their tourists arrivals, cny etc etc).

All these are just the manipulation and mind games from the BB.

Do your research and trust your own judgement. Don't fall into any " positive" or " negative" trap man.

SINGAPORE, Feb 2 (Reuters) - Shares of casino operator Genting Singapore rose as much as 3.4 percent on Wednesday on hopes it will post better fourth quarter result compared to the previous quarter. At 0313 GMT, Genting Singapore shares were up 2.9 percent at S$2.11 on a volume of 48.9 million shares traded. Genting Singapore said its Resorts World at Sentosa casino resort contributed EBITDA of S$346.5 million ($272.7 million) in its third quarter, down from S$503.5 million in the second quarter amid competition from Las Vegas Sands' newly opened Marina Bay Sands. EBITDA refers to earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation.

Genting Singapore's fourth quarter result is expected to be released in late February. " Their share price has come down a fair bit, so not surprisingly people go bottom-fishing... One concern was that their fourth quarter result was going to be uninspiring because of the cannibalisation from Marina Bay Sands," said Joseph Wong, an analyst at CIMB Research.

" But during holidays they are pulling in a lot of families and there is expectation of the opening of more attractions in 2011," he said. Some speculative moments are going on in speculating of HUDC flats and believed areas include hougang and perhaps, shunfu where people are expecting higg potential of these HUDC flats being privatised or already " action in progress" .

Saw advertisement asking for selling price of 950,000.00 for a flat in hougang area.

P/s - The only EFFECTIVE measure is : Government should re-look at the HDB Valuations. Most HDB resale flats are valued at very high price and it is affecting the whole general market.

PM Lee promises to maintain affordable housing??

The Singapore government promises to do more to stabilise the property market, if necessary, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong in his Chinese New Year message.

“The government has acted to curb speculation and cool the property market. We will do more to stabilise the market if and when this becomes necessary,” said PM Lee. “We will keep housing affordable to Singaporeans, especially public housing. At the same time, in a prospering economy, home owners should see their properties appreciating in value over the long term.”

Recently, the government announced new property measures that would increase the seller’s stamp duty (SSD) on properties to a maximum of 16 percent of the sale price if the property is sold within a year, as well as lower the limit that banks can lend buyers for a second property, down to 60 percent of the property’s value.

In terms of immigration policy, the prime minister acknowledged the “sense of dislocation and unfamiliarity” felt by many Singaporeans but stressed the need to keep up with the world or face decline in population and stagnation.

“We need immigrants to reinforce our ranks but we must maintain a clear majority of local-born Singaporeans who set the tone of our society and uphold our core values and ethos,” he said.

“We are managing the inflow of foreigners who want to live and work here. Many want to become permanent residents and new citizens but we will only select those who can add value to Singapore.”
