Apple i-phone  is still the best!

Nokia, Microsoft join forces against Google, Apple
* Nokia to use Windows Phone as software platform

  * Nokia to use Microsoft's Bing search on devices

  * Says 2011-2012 to be transition years

  * Nokia shares dive more than 11 percent

  (Adds Nokia share price fall)

  By Tarmo Virki

LONDON, Feb 11 (Reuters) - Nokia and Microsoft have teamed up to take on Google and Apple in the fast-growing smartphone market as the Finnish cellphone maker attempts to regain its leading position in the sector.

Nokia said it would use Windows Phone as the software platform for its smartphones as part of new chief executive Stephen Elop's overhaul of the world's biggest cellphone maker.

" Nokia and Microsoft will combine our strengths to deliver an ecosystem with unrivalled global reach and scale. It's now a three-horse race," Elop said ahead of an investor day in London.

Investors were not convinced by Elop's eagerly anticipated strategy announcement and shares in Nokia tumbled more than 11 percent as the market reacted to Nokia' saying that 2011 and 2012 would be " transition years" as it built up the partnership.

Friday's deal marks a major breakthrough for Microsoft after years of struggling to establish itself in wireless. Its Windows Phone had a mere 2 percent market share in the last quarter.

Microsoft's Windows Phone platform is widely recognised by industry experts as a leading edge technology but has not yet gained success among consumers.

" This is a partnership born out of both parties' fear of marginalisation at the hands of Apple and Google but there is no silver bullet," said analyst Geoff Blaber from CCS Insight.

Nokia has rapidly lost share in the higher-margin smartphone market to Apple's iPhone, and products based on Google's Android platform, which claimed the top spot from the company last quarter.

" This is a very frank admission that Nokia's platform strategy has failed and underlines the seriousness of Nokia's position. Such a move would have been unthinkable just 12 months ago," Blaber added.

In a bid to stem Nokia's losses, Chairman Jorma Ollila brought Elop in from Microsoft last September. The 47-year-old is the first non-Finn to head the company.

Nokia said in a statement it would stick with its current management team, with only one senior executive to leave. There had been speculation of a wider cull at the company.

Nokia also said it would use Microsoft's Bing search engine across its cellphones, potentially opening up a huge market for Microsoft as it seeks to build up its challenge to Google as the world's leading search engine.

Analysts said the Finnish company, which invested billions of dollars in building up mobile internet services under its previous CEO, had effectively admitted defeat in its services strategy by joining forces with Microsoft. DBS seeks more branches in China, eyes Indian incorporation

SINGAPORE, Feb 11 - DBS , Southeast Asia's biggest bank, said the bank would want to have 50 branches in China over the next three years and could do the same in India if it could set up a locally incorporated banking unit.

" We want to try and get to 50 branches in China in the next three years," CEO Piyush Gupta told a news conference. " If the subsidisation thing works out, we probably want to do the same in India in the next three years." The bank has 16 outlets, including 8 branches, in China, where it has a locally incorporated unit. It has 12 branches in India.

DBS also has plans to convert its Taiwan operation into a subsidiary to rapidly expand in the country. Local incorporation is a requirement before China and India allow foreign banks more complete access to retail banking and locally incorporated foreign banks often win fast regulatory approval to set up branches or launch new products.

As i said before, cooling measures , be it in singapore or china,  is not  fool-proof  ,  it is merely a Procedure, which , making some people's life rather difficult and  at the same time,  making others   gertting richer and richer.

The cash rich China's people, will flop to whichever country (e.g.  HongKong or Singapore)  that has introduced so call  " COOLING MEASURES" ,  the cycle goes round and round, it boils down to whether ,      can one afford to buy properties and speculate in the midst of the property cooling measures all over the world.

Economy is doing well. Up coming budgets will be one of the best ever. Be prepare for a rally. Even though some funds are selling. They are mainly selling Property counters that have presence in China. This is just knee jerk effect.... should be over pretty soon. I expect selling to be ease by today closing and flat for friday.

We might expect rebound in the next week.

HUAT AH

Singapore is doing well, the global economy is not going into double dip. Theres no reason for STI to crash. STI have corrected quite a fair bit.

I expect STI to hold 3120. Triple bottom.

SINGAPORE FOREVER ---- HUAT AH ---- Singapore also got funds ok.... dont think you foreigners can pump and dump our stock mkt.

Being wary of a bubble and knowing when it will burst are two different things. In the meantime, its right to be scepticals about the property sector, yet, stay tune when everyone else is fearful.    :)

Genting Singapore uptrend not in danger - AmFraser
AmFraser analyst Najeeb Jarhom says recent downward pressure on Genting Singapore (G13.SG) “should not endanger” the stock’s recent uptrend so long as the price holds above the key $1.84-$1.92 breakout points.

However, the house reckons resistance will stay in place at the $2.12-$2.22 band for now. The stock is +0.5% at $2.07.

“Frequent testing of lower end of $2.00-$2.22 must have left traders edgy” but minimum weekly closing prices since mid-September remain well above weekly lows, which ”should neutralize some of their fears.“

It pegs a near-term target price at $2.12-$2.16.

'Hold' when one thinks it is  worth to hold.  Buy on dip when one thinks it is worth to buy.
