Wall Street?s ship of fools

Financial stocks took a beating Thursday after the latest round of downgrades and estimate cuts. Analyst Meredith Whitney at Oppenheimer said she expects Citi (C), Merrill Lynch (MER) and UBS (UBS) to post aggregate first-quarter losses of $30 billion next month. ?As many expected the fourth quarter to be the ?kitchen sink? for the industry,? she writes, ?we believe first quarter results, to be reported in two weeks time, will be a rude awakening.?

But the rude awakening has already arrived for some observers. At Portfolio.com, Megan Barnett calls Wall Street research ?worthless,? noting an overlooked disclosure line in a recent Whitney report: ?We have very little earnings visibility and very little confidence in our estimates.? Meanwhile,  Michael Lewis suggests Wall Street analysts aren?t the only ones lacking an understanding of the securities business. ?There is, of course, a reason that the market doesn?t understand Wall Street firms,? he writes at Bloomberg. ?The people who run Wall Street firms, and who convey news of their inner workings to the outside world, don?t understand them either.? Comforting.

I mean there are still some who hav't submit their report card yet in (try to save some face) how much they lost in to Sub-prime and it CDO, so very likely to show more hand later and or to lend more $$$ to them with or w/o telling us the real story, only half of their stories. The truth will out when market decide, meanwhile US 2nd Q is not that rosy.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Wall Street's major indexes struggled Thursday morning as downgrades of Citibank, Bank of America, and Merrill Lynch dragged down financials. Techs sank too, on Oracle's sales miss, sending the Nasdaq tumbling and causing the Dow and S&P 500 to erase early gains sparked by some positive economic news.

About two hours into the session, the Dow Jones industrial average (INDU) and the broader Standard & Poor's 500 (SPX) index both had lost had lost 0.3%, and the tech-fueled Nasdaq composite (COMP) lost 1.1%.

Anyone read ? (Sun) ST paper, page 24 (invest-property)

It mentioned Muted market gives buyers more bargaining power

Prices aren't tumbling, but it's a good time to get a unit at a reasonable price, say experts.

Mean while Property correspondent Joyce Teo say. It is no secret that the residential property market is in a lacklustre mood.

For those hard core poor and poventy trap, the mean to top to a mininum of 20,000, a big problem here. here is one solution a dollar to match a dollar from charity institution and multi-millionaires philanthropist (Tax free) and govern by a board of governors for retired funded fund, those who age hit 55 can then wish so, can apply for topping up to $8,000. EG no-1. If one hitting 55 have only $4k, retired funded fund can top up $4k. EG no-2, if one hit 55 of age and have only $1k to look forward in his/her CPF a/c, retired funded fund can top $4k, it mean only to help those beyond their mean to top. This is also a way to assist those that reach 55 years old and also before taking all out their life saving, a few thousand of available dollar to spend.

I mean gov can afford to top up, up to $4,000. What about those who can't afford, they just don't have that kind of $$$ or cent to so within their mean, some may only have a few hundred dollars in their CPF a/c for retirement. Are they going tobe remain as what they are....?.
