The mkts have experienced a string of losses over the past few trading sessions. On Wednesday, the release of minutes from the latest U.S. Federal Reserve meeting pushed stocks lower.

Investors have been in a bearish mood as they consider the possibility that the Fed will soon start pulling back on its massive bond-purchase program -- also known as quantitative easing (QE).

" Signal that policymakers are willing to consider a taper in the near term, but they need decent data - in particular employment data - to support their decision." Deutsche Bank economists Jim Reid and Gael Gunubu.

Related: Fear & Greed Index is in EXTREME FEAR

Investors will continue looking Thursday for hints as to when exactly the Fed will start " tapering" its bond-buying program, as central bankers from across the globe gather for an economic symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyo.  For  symposium is especially significant since Janet Yellen, a leading candidate for the top job at Fed will be in attendance.

" If Yellen is indeed chosen to take the reins next year, it will be up to her to manage the Fed's move  on monetary policy normalization. With that in mind, traders will be keen to hear what she has to say on the matter of QE 'tapering'," he said.

Investors also await a weekly report on initial jobless claims from the Department of Labor, which is set to come out at 8:30 a.m. ET.

http://finance.fortune.cnn.com/2013/08/22/emerging-markets-ruchir-sharma/?iid=HP_LN

Ruchir Sharma, the top emerging market's strategist at Morgan Stanley, saw it all coming. For a long-time, Sharma's bearish calls were overshadowed by Goldman Sachs' Jim O'Neill, (former emerging mkt strategist and China perma-bull who left the bank earlier this year.)

But in his book, Breakout Nations, which came out early last year, Sharma said the notion that China and other developing nations would soon overtake the West as the drivers of the world economy was bogus. On Wednesday.

The Morgan Stanley (MS) strategist says he thinks the emerging market sell off won't end anytime soon.

You have long been one of the few emerging market bears. Are you pleased that your dire predictions are coming true?

I think I was bearish, but only relatively. The optimism around emerging markets reached crazy levels back in 2009 and 2010. There was this general view that all the emerging markets will rise, and that the West was in permanent decline.

But aren't there signs that China is rebounding?

My view is that China is moving to a slower growth plane, say 5%-6%, and that it will move to that trend line in the next year or so. That's not a hard landing, but I don't think the market has priced that in.

How real are Brazil's problems?

I don't see Brazil, or Russia or South America for that matter, growing faster than the U.S. over the next three to five years.

A sub-index measuring new orders rose to a four-mth high of 50.5 in Aug from 46.6 in July. But the sub-index on new export orders edged lower in a reminder of weak global demand.
The employment sub-index of the flash PMI also picked up in August, but still hovered below the 50 watershed line.
"This is mainly driven by the initial filtering-through of recent fine-tuning measures and companies' restocking activities, despite the continuous external weakness," said Hongbin Qu, chief China economist at HSBC.
"We expect further filtering-through, which is likely to deliver some upside surprises to China's growth in the coming months."
The flash HSBC PMI, compiled by Markit Economics Research, is the earliest available indicator of mthly activity in the Chinese economy, and tends to focus more on small to mid-sized firms in the private sector.

NO QUICK RECOVERY IN SIGHT.....?. As HSBC PMI index rose to 50.1 from 47.7.

FUKUSHIMA: Pacific Ocean Will Not Dilute Dumped Radioactive WaterOperator of stricken Fukushima nuclear plant has been dumping thousand tons per day of radioactive water into Pacific ocean.

The reactors are ?riddled with meltdown holes?, building 4 ? with more radiation than all nuclear bombs ever dropped or tested ? is missing entire walls, and building 3 is a pile of rubble.

Whole complex is leaking like a sieve, and the rivers of water pumped in, the reactors everyday just pouring into the ocean (Faithfully everyday).

Most people assume, ocean will dilute the radiation from Fukushima enough that any radiation reaching the West Coast of the U.S. will be low.

Just as we noted 2 days after the earthquake hit that the jet stream might carry radiation to the U.S. by wind ? we are now warning that ocean currents might carry more radiation to the at least some portions of the West Coast of North America than is assumed.

Here is what the North Pacific Gyre looks like:

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) ? Federal Reserve officials agreed with their leader Ben Bernanke?s view that the economy will pick up later this year and allow the central bank to taper its asset purchase plan before the end of the year, according to minutes released Wednesday. But they shied away from signalling when a move might come.

The central bankers did not signal as to whether such a taper of the $85 billion-per-month bond purchase plan would come in September, October or December, the three remaining meeting dates for 2013.

There were few signs that a majority was poised to pull the trigger at the September meeting but also there were no strong arguments against a quick move.

There were conflicting views expressed, with neither in the majority.

Prognosis for emerging mkts is not looking good after four straight days of heavy selling in stocks and sharp currency falls that have prompted Turkey and India to step in with supportive steps.

While the volatility, driven by concerns about an unwinding of U.S. monetary stimulus, may not be over yet, nor is it time to hit the emerging-markets panic-button, strategists say.

But here's the thing. This can't go on forever. If the stock markets in China, India, Brazil and other large emerging markets continue to suffer, that would be bad news for the U.S. -- especially if the economies of those emerging markets start to slow dramatically as well.

While the recent signs of life in the U.S. economy and the miraculous turnaround in Europe are encouraging, the developed world could be in for a nasty shock if emerging markets enter their own recession.

Stocks are in the midst of an August swoon. Is this finally the beginning of the long-awaited correction? Well, if I really knew the answer to that, I probably wouldn't be.............What I do know is this.

Fears about the Fed getting ready to finally do something that rhymes with papering once again causing stocks to slide. Like they did in June, as uncomfortable as it is to watch the mkt fall for four straight days (losing streak may end today though), we need a little perspective.

Sure, VIX (VIX) is hovering near 15. That's the highest level measure of volatility since early July. And CNNMoney's own Fear & Greed Index, which looks at the VIX and six other market indicators, briefly flashed signs of Extreme Fear this morning. The last time investors were that scared was also early July.
